NYPD detectives are heading to California to question a woman caught on video falsely accusing a Black teen of stealing her cellphone in a SoHo hotel.
The officers want the woman, Miya Ponsetto, to either fly to New York with them now to face criminal charges or get arrested and extradited.
Meanwhile, for anything short of murder (and even then it's a paperwork nightmare) Cook County Courts won't extradite.
What's a false accusation - Class C Misdemeanor or lower in Illinois and a Civil Lawsuit if you can find the right law firm?

Gotta ask myself if they'd be flying across the country to pester someone if the accused thief was some color other than black. How many of these kinds of incidents has NY ever prosecuted, let alone chased people across the Country to deal with?
If it's not a felony, what's the chances that Californiastan will extradite?
All she has to do is claim that after she got out of the taxi someone told her that the kid took her phone and that's why she accused him.

When I was a det. I found out Cook County did not extradite unless the victim was willing to pay for the extradition. So figure 2 dets. airfare both ways, bad guy airfare one way. Dets. lodging if you had to go for judical hearings to spring the bad guy which might take a day or 2. As you can see victims are not going to do that, although I had one large company agree to it because the bad guy/employee embezzled funds and they said they wanted to send a message to the other employees. I also had some cases where the bad guy was wanted in other counties other than Cook. In a couple of them they said we will extradite the mope for our cases and then turn him over to you. These were two counties smaller than Cook. I was really surprised.
Guaranteed cook county would do the same... don’t fuck up and not arrest because you will be fired for now— 2 years down the road, fired at will

What usually happens is that the New York police file the misdemeanor charge, get a warrant and the warrant is endorsed "local extradition only". Every time the suspect gets stopped by the police in their home state, the police tell the suspect there is a warrant for their arrest in New York and you should clear it up. If the suspect forgets about the incident and goes to New York and is stopped by the police or turned in by an acquaintance with a grudge, the suspect is held either without bail or high bail because of the suspects status as a fugitive. For all practical purposes, this usual procedure results in a banishment from the state of New York which protects the New York public. The victim is still free to sue the suspect in New York courts, get a default civil judgment, and hire a California attorney to garnish and seize the suspects bank accounts and property to pay for the default judgment.
So how much time and money was spent on investigating Jussie?

Two, maybe three days of air travel for an extradition and that’s if once you’re there can find the person of interest for an incident that amounts to wigging-out and allegation that may or may not been documented on a case report.
On one hand I’d like the travel time, albeit lockdowns makes SoCal undesirable during these challenging times, but taking off the weekend to to spend some CU in nice weather would be normally be a good thing, I’d be more worried of the backlog of cases that would be stacked on my queue when I returned.

Back in the day when I worked homicide I went on some pretty cool extraditions, had a lot of fun. Some guys had it even better, two guys stayed in Puerto Rico for a week. It was one of the perks of the job. If you got the UFAP warrant you got the extradition. Now, I understand Chicago has an extradition unit
