Chicago is Still Doomed

We predicted the decline of Chicago years ago, a decade or more. So did lots of other people. It wasn't hard to see the death spiral a lot of big cities entered into. It ha sped up and slowed down over the years, but the underlying conditions that smart people saw are still there and getting more obvious by the minute.

Example:

  • Like the rest of the world, downtown Chicago office landlords got to celebrate the end of the COVID-19 health emergency during the second quarter of 2023. But the fallout they face from the pandemic is still getting worse.

The office vacancy rate in the central business district midway through the year inched up to 22.6%, an all-time high, from 22.4% three months earlier, according to data from real estate services firm CBRE. The new share of available space is up from 21.2% a year ago and 13.8% when the public health crisis began. The vacancy rate has hit a new record high in nine of the past 11 quarters, according to CBRE.

Downtown used to be a monster tax generating entity. An economic engine like McCormick Place or O'Hare Airport or Michigan Avenue shops. Crime and Groot put a dent in those entities and they were in decline, some years worse than others.

Then the riots happened. And the COVID "pandemic." And suddenly, big companies were faced with the reality that downtown properties weren't really that necessary to function. Sky high rents were a drain on the bottom line. And when the big businesses started leaving, all the support structure collapsed, and the big blue cities that relied on that tax revenue turned into financial black holes.

Frisco, LA, New York and others are places that people are leaving from, not moving to. Chicago is on that list, too.

The 2 oldest have been gone for years and the youngest finishes college next year. Still rent the garden unit apartment in a nearby ‘burb which I’ve had for the past 13 years (yeah, fuck the residency requirement) for when I come back to visit family and friends.

Get the family out. CHECK

Sell all the properties before the markets tank. CHECK

No “hindsight is 20/20” here. Saw the shit coming and got out while the gettin’ was good.

Now let’s see how pension funding moving forward looks…

The marxists with their “You didn’t build that” attitude won’t shed a tear when the capitalist finally wise up and leave for fiscal reasons, for safety reasons, or for their children’s education. They will just find more ways to tax the people that remain. Slot machines in every district station could help.

Death of a city is similar to “death by a thousand cuts”. It happens slowly. Sometimes everyone doesn’t see it happening until time continues to go by. It’s happening and at some point it will be unstoppable. I’m not sure at what point that will be. In modern times there isn’t much data on the death of a city. There aren’t many city’s with two million people to compare to. Chicago has lost one million people sense 1950. Chicago has the same population as in 1910. In the 1920’s Chicago had fewer than 300 homicides. Crime is now all over the city. City leaders keep the mantra we need more time and we are reducing crime. All while the Streets of Chicago run red with blood. Chicago’s 911 Emergency number has been getting 18,000 plus calls a day for the past month. But some want to push crime is down. Some want to focus on the reported crime all while knowing a lot of crimes are unreported for various reasons. Some crimes are misreported and indexed. Chicago might be come a failed city, only time will tell. But Chicago has a bad reputation and there are no quick fixes. The Leadership of Chicago better get a handle on crime if they truly want to improve the health of Chicago. My impression of the city leadership is they want to enrich their pockets along with their friends and family and move on to another area and do the same. I just don’t have faith that things are going to change. If I wasn’t required to live here and wasn’t so invested here I would move too. I really don’t have any words of encouragement at this time……….

Chicago hasn’t been economically viable for a while. No signs of any change either. Driving around on the South Side with more vacant lots than houses. Not many residents keeping up with repairs or doing improvements. West Side about the same. So much for taxpayers funded South by West plan.

Chicago should give virtual tours of neighborhoods so the destruction of the city can be documented for future generations to study and learn from. The fall of the biggest city in the Midwest is occurring right in front of our eyes.

Used to make me sick, but I’ve accepted it now. I honestly thought I would stay here til I died.
Intellectually, I knew that was untenable in 2017 when the city and former alderman John Arena decided to build large housing projects on the NW side.
We’re going to fight for our neighborhood and property values! Public meetings, elections, protests, ho hum…….You lose!
Then 2020 happened. Riots and state encouraged crime for the last 3 years.
What will this be like in 20 years when you’re in your 70s? Your neighbors will be home invading you because they know retired cops have guns.
I moved out of state last year.

Property values both residential and commercial plummet as well as revenues.

And the communists who engineered it all lay in the shadows waiting to buy up all the property vacated and destroyed for Pennie’s on the dollar!

It truly is a shame that it's happening to a once great city. This really happened quickly, and once it started the flood gates were opened. I don't see Chicago getting any better with Johnsons. The city hasn't hit rock bottom yet. Only after his term is up, there may be a resurgence in Chicago.

Yes, it is doomed.

A few years ago, some posters on this board laughed at the comparisons to Detroit: "No way....Chicago is totally different....." Yet here we are, well on our way.

Ten years ago the Loop was crowded and full of good eateries and places to get a drink after work. There were crowds late into the evening. Now, if you have to go there, it's a place to escape as quickly as possible. Bums are dangerously aggressive and the flood of illegals is now adding to the crowd of beggars. Businesses have closed and aren't coming back. It reeks of weed and normal people are constantly looking over their shoulder. In short, it's a third-world sh*thole. It will get even worse when the CPD dwindles to a squad of recruits.

The Daley-Emanuel-Lightfoot-Johnson Democrat death spiral accelerates.

Illinois Democrats Ready To Allow Illegal Immigrants To Become Cops

Liam Edgar July 10, 2023
Here’s another dose of Democratic logic: allow those who broke the law to become the ones who enforce the laws.
TFP File Photo
Here’s another dose of Democratic logic: allow those who broke the law to become the ones who enforce the laws. Illinois Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker is close to signing a bill allowing illegal immigrants who remain in the country under an Obama-era program to work as law enforcement officers, according to Breitbart News report on Sunday.

It’s unclear how the bill would work in one sense: federal law bans illegal immigrants from becoming cops, according to The Center Square.

Still, Democrats broadly support the bill, which passed the left-wing Illinois legislature in June. If enacted, it would allow people enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program to work as police officers or sheriff’s deputies.

Roughly 800,000 people are in the DACA system, including those brought to America illegally as children.

Illinois state Sen. Mary Edly-Allen, the bill’s sponsor, argued that illegals already work in public-service jobs. s hold similar positions.

“We currently have many DACA recipients serving in the capacity in our classrooms, as healthcare workers, and even serving in our military,” said Edly-Allen, according to Center Square.

“I think this would be a natural progression to allow these same people that serve in this capacity to serve our communities.”

But state Sen. Chapin Rose, a Republican, questioned the sanity of letting noncitizens arrest a U.S. citizen in Illinois.

“To hand the power to arrest and detain a citizen of this state, or a citizen of any state in the United States, to a noncitizen is a fundamental breach of democracy,” Rose said, according to Center Square. “It is antithetical to the police power of any state.”

Breitbart News noted that the bill will likely become law no matter what Pritzker does. The Democrats hold supermajorities in both halves of the legislature, meaning they could override a veto.

Seriously, what is the attraction of a corporate HQ in downtown Chicago? Riding the train in each day from Naperville is a drain on the brain. Driving in is even more taxing (no pun intended). Dining out for lunch is expensive. Oh, and let's not forget the crime. Coming back into the city on the weekends or at night for cultural events is a safety risk.

Corporation CEO's who respect their employees will plant the HQ's in the burbs where their employees live. Leave Chicago for the illegal immigrants, thugs, and those who don't care where they live.

The next steps:

1) start a city income tax to chase even more workers out of Chicago

2) pass out free drug paraphernalia (funded by taxpayers) to create permanent junkie colonies

3) dumb down CPD standards to hire felons and incompetents to backfill vacancies

4) increase guaranteed income handouts (funded by taxpayers) to favored groups

5) create tax/fine/"convenience fee" exemptions for favored groups

6) intensify tax/fine/"convenience fee" collections against disfavored groups

7) before elections, hand-deliver absentee/mail-in ballots to favored groups, prison inmates, junkies, bums, and invalids. Assist them in their choices and collect ballots for drop-off at collection boxes

True on all fronts but if you drive around the city you’ll see nothing but new construction and people enjoying the city. All the empty buildings downtown will be repurposed into housing. Always happens over time. The loft buildings went from manufacturing to housing and tech centers. Old office buildings will have some lower rent but most will be market rate and people will flock to live there. Imagine being able to walk to work in downtown chicago? With all the problems the masses want to live her and and people love to visit year round. As far as the pension debts, spread out the fix long enough and keep changing the benefits for new hires the problem will be fixed eventually. Think we in the 5% that see all the death and destruction but most people are never touched by the crime and destruction so as far as they are concerned it don’t exists. And we have that great big lake full of fresh water. The city is almost indestructible. Try as they might chicago keeps chugging along just fine.

I don’t know. I kinda like the unintended consequences of all this.

I’ve never made as much money on this job as I have the last few years. For doing next to nothing. Nothing proactive. No arrests. Little to no contact with the general public. I have no bills. None. No mortgage. No car notes. No HELOC. Nuthin’. Utilities, groceries and investments are my only required expenditures.

Great seniority. Great furloughs. All the time off I want (don’t you believe all those AMC’s announcing restricted time off and extension of tours - they’re all smoke and mirrors to give the public another layer of a false sense of security).

I’ve been home every weekend, haven’t missed a family party or event with friends and have spent 99% of this down time in the suburbs and/or out of state. You know, places were people are normal and adhere to social norms like politeness and good manners. Haven’t seen a single pair of jeans falling of the ass of a savage. No gold teefuses. No putrid clouds of cannabis everywhere I turn. No impulsive motorists and none of the general ignorance which always seems to accompany certain demographics wherever they may roam.

Life is good. I may actually stay til 63 if this keeps up.

That's interesting, can you add a link to stats about this. Sure lots of gun crime and murders, but 2.6 million people. And of course politicians and judges love criminals so it's an endless revolving door. Per capita Chicago isn't as bad as many other shithole cities. And in the world, number 3? I'm surprised when I think of South Africa and Brazil, for example. Take little old Birmingham, Alabama, 2022 census estimate of 196,910 population, that represents a homicide rate of 74.7 homicides per 100,000 residents. Birmingham had 152 homicides in 2022, a record high. I wouldn't want to live there either. Escape if you can.

Nashville, TN is a strongly dem city too. A great lady named Dr. Carol Swain ran for mayor some years ago, but didn't do well as she doesn't see herself as a black victim. You might check out her youtube channel. She speaks with common sense and intelligence. Nice state if you stay away from the democrap controlled cities. you know your society is morally bankrupt and corrupted when politicians, public schools, universities, children's hospitals and the medical associations promote Spay and Neuter of grade school kids while promoting it as saving the children and a human right. Eugenics was once considered evil.

On the other hand once upon a time A eunuch (/ˈjuːnək/ (listen) YOO-nək)[1] is a male who has been castrated.[2] Throughout history, castration often served a specific social function.[3]

The earliest records for intentional castration to produce eunuchs are from the Sumerian city of Lagash in the 2nd millennium BCE.[4][5] Over the millennia since, they have performed a wide variety of functions in many different cultures: courtiers or equivalent domestics, for espionage or clandestine operations, castrato singers, concubines or sexual partners, religious specialists, soldiers, royal guards, government officials, and guardians of women or harem servants.

Eunuchs would usually be servants or slaves who had been castrated to make them less threatening servants of a royal court where physical access to the ruler could wield great influence.[6] Seemingly lowly domestic functions—such as making the ruler's bed, bathing him, cutting his hair, carrying him in his litter, or even relaying messages—could, in theory, give a eunuch "the ruler's ear" and impart de facto power on the formally humble but trusted servant. Similar instances are reflected in the humble origins and etymology of many high offices.

Eunuchs supposedly did not generally have loyalties to the military, the aristocracy, or a family of their own (having neither offspring nor in-laws, at the very least). They were thus seen as more trustworthy and less interested in establishing a private "dynasty". Because their condition usually lowered their social status, they could also be easily replaced or killed without repercussion. In cultures that had both harems and eunuchs, eunuchs were sometimes used as harem servants.

I'll have to disagree with you on this one Chicago's the place to go because we're still cheap and have lots of empty land. This is going to be a boom Town the next 10 to 20 years for liberals that's why they went so hard left. HiHo

Funny how demographics (not political parties, nor gun laws) determine the amount of crime & misery. Those same demographics eventually end up running the city & placing their group's interests above all else. Ah, the American way.

Been on State St from Congress Pkwy to the River lately? Took the brunt of the riots. You don’t even wanna know what’s going on, on Plymouth from Congress to Jackson and Pritzker Park across from the shuttered hotel that is housing 1000 illegal men. And most are straight up South American Gangsters. Go check it out.

And here’s an insider tip…MOST downtown commercial leases are not year-to-year. Most are 4-5 leases…so we really won’t know the extent of the damage and the number of vacancies until the end of 2024. Seems like the bubble will burst either right before or right after the 2024 election.

Moved out in 2011 and was sad to leave. Really loved Chicago, the museums, food, architecture and trappings of a big city. Turned out it was one of the smartest thing I ever did. Cracks in the facade were starting to show with mugging and the like happening downtown, where I lived. Daley had kept a lid on things and the increases in crime were well pillowed from the press, or covered up. After watching city assets being sold off for short term money, thus removing regular income, the writing on the wall was plain. At the same time mugging was reclassified as aggressive panhandling which was becoming common. Moved to the reddest of red states and have been more or less happy. Watching the decline with my own eyes and experiences was painful but educational. Starting grocery shopping outside of Cook county to avoid the aggressive panhandling, needles, urine and feces in the back isles of Dominics and huge city and county taxes it became clear this was not a rising trend, but downward and accelerating. Sold my Streeterville condo, packed my car, dog in the back and headed out. Twelve years down the road my lakefront condo is selling for less then the price I sold it for. The taxes have risen 30% as well as the monthly assessment, thus underlying the wisdom of my choice. Now, in 2023, my taxes and monthly nut is less than what I was paying for parking in 2011. I have not been back since. So what’s the message here? I would say if you can leave, leave now. It’s going to get a whole lot worse with dwindling police numbers and recruit quality as well as the complete vacuum of competent and honest leadership. As in a Sam Kinison monologue about refugee camps in Africa, “… they don’t need food, they need a UHaul…”
