Mayor Brandon Johnson was urged Monday to choose counterterrorism Chief Larry Snelling to be Chicago’s next police superintendent with all signs pointing in that direction after in-person interviews with all three finalists.
Johnson is expected to announce the make-or-break appointment this week after spending much of Monday meeting face to face at City Hall with each of the three finalists: Snelling, 54; Angel Novalez, the Chicago Police Department’s 50-year-old head of Constitutional Policing and Reform; and Madison, Wisconsin, police chief Shon Barnes, 49.
Snelling, the Chicago Police Department’s chief of the bureau of counterterrorism, has been the safe choice — and the odds-on favorite — from the moment that the Community Commission for Public Safety and Accountability announced the names of the three finalists.
That’s because police morale is at rock bottom, Johnson is determined to improve it, and Snelling has the best chance to reverse a mass exodus that has left the police department with 1,700 fewer officers than four years ago.
For that same reason, Ald. Chris Taliaferro (29th), chairman of the City Council’s Police and Fire Committee, is urging Johnson to appoint Snelling the next top cop.
Taliaferro's recommending? This selection is going to reveal quite a bit of the wheeling-and-dealing that's been going on the last few months.

Tom Breen, the attorney for Joseph Walsh, asked Sgt. Larry Snelling about the moment just before Van Dyke opened fire on McDonald on Oct. 20, 2014.
"Is he not taking that knife in his right hand, and is he not turning toward the officers?" Breen asked.
"I can't see that in the video," Snelling said.
That's when Breen labeled the actions not caught on video "the dark side of the moon."
"The two officers that got out of the squad car," Breen said, referring to Walsh and Van Dyke, "they would be able to see what I referred to as the dark side of the moon'?"

Same bosses do the same shit. Look at KC. She is the new Lt. over at forensics. She has never had a bad day on this job. She has never worked the streets. Her and her sister and brother in law all Lts, all in units. Never worked a beat car or were street sgts or wols. That’s what is wrong with this department. There needs to be a major cultural shift not just within the department but society as a whole to keep the exodus from happening. Exactly! $2000 is not going to do a damm thing to retain senior officers. $2000 doesn’t make this job any better. It’s still way too risky to put your finances on the line in such a politically hostile environment toward the police. If you have more than 20 years it’s not worth risking your earned pension, 457, house or any other assets. It could be taken away from one 911 call.

I’ve seen the video, we all did, Walsh and Van Dyke closed in the gap with their squad car. They drove in too close to the target leaving them with no other choice but to shoot. McDonald was on foot, Van Dyke could’ve created more distance, but he drove right up on the guy and then claimed that he felt threatened. Jason seemed excited to let off those 16 shots. He was the only one that felt threatened. Now leave this in the past.

Competence amongst the brass left this job years ago. In my current unit, there’s 1 Commander, 3 Lt’s and 20 sergeants. Out of all of them, we have one competent sergeant. I have absolutely no confidence in the others.
I always thought the over promotion of Snelling was the 30 pieces of silver he was promised for the Van Dyke testimony. It is sad that people believe the dude that hid in the academy for most of his career would make a good superintendent.
Publish the list of 52 that became 53 candidates for supe and let’s vote.

You are correct also many coppers with the “F@ck this job and this city” attitude that leave are finding out when they leave, less money and more accountability for the doing the work, and not having ability to go to another district/area as small department does not have that luxury! The reality is everywhere insanity reigns grass is not always better. Only God knows the future, pray take care of yourself, your family amen! This job allowed me to put all my kids through good schools and colleges bought the new vehicles for college they graduated and we were able to pay 100% and went on vacations every year! A family doctor averages $135k a year many coppers make more, some detectives over 250K command staff bosses more, so tell us how much better it is other places!

How do you take a guy who’s worked a Cush spot at the academy most of his career (over 20 years inside), promote him by merit several times, and hand him the top spot?
As an instructor at the academy for so long, don’t you think he should be familiar with the GOs and rules and regulations?
Perhaps an expert even?
How are you an instructor for 20 years but can’t score well enough on a test to get promoted?
Say what you want about Novalez over the years, but some people seem to forget he was shot in the line of duty.
You know, like doing actual police work outside of the academy.

Snelling is the best choice of the 3. Don’t single him out for the portal nonsense, he wasn’t the only one. In fact, can you name one exempt that didn’t take part? I’m sure your phat ass was that guy who screwed everyone else over because you couldn’t keep up in gym class. I get it, it was hard for you to do that fourth sit up after gorging at Pompei while creating a dumb nickname in your head like “papa boner!” Don’t take out your frustration of having a 24 minute 1.5 mile run on Larry Snelling. Now, go back to your mom’s basement and eat your meatloaf along with that tub of mashed potatoes mixed with bacon bits. Mom can hold your feet while you try to do your third sit up, she’s still a good spotter.

No I will single him out on all merit permotions and as all as testifing against another copper for doing his job. The job that Larry smelling the gym instructor trained him on. Police dept is the biggest joke of a job.

The real question is, Why would ANYONE want to be Supt? All your going to be the "Yes" man and Boot Licker to BJ who is always going to have you on your knees in meetings. So when Snelling gets the Sup spot will he move the Sups office to the Academy? That’s probably the only building he knows.
Saying Snelling is the best choice for Stupidintendent is like saying Hunter Biden is the best choice of interventionists. Nothing is gonna change for you boys and girls still on the job… it’s all a predetermined, semi-well orchestrated scam. Snelling is just the latest semi-literate puppet who’ll be tasked with being the Departments figurehead.

Snelling is an expert in training, the use of force and writing reports at the Chicago Police Department. He testified when he watches dash video of Van Dyke's shooting of McDonald, he doesn't see anything that would have justified pulling the trigger.

The last response here is on the money. I don't know if LS would beat good super don't know the guy. What he didn't do in his JVD testimony was lie to cover it up. Tier and RDO’s canceled is going to be around for years. What part of the department being down 1700 9161’s don’t you comprehend? New hiring isn’t keeping up with attrition and isn’t going to. Manpower, like the pension fund, is in a death spiral.
Simple solution is to write a To/From to keep your RDO. I haven't worked one of these in over two years. When they denied my one request I just called in sick. Screw this department, I'm never working forced OT and don't care.
