Again, the Pension Board is fucking with legitimately Duty Disabled Officers who go into "no pay" status due to the Pension Board not doing their jobs, nor doing anything to fix what is obviously broken.
The FOP is trying to fix it in Springfield (excuse the spelling errors - evidently, WGN can't hire editors who know how to read....probably illegal Venezuelans):
- The Chicago Fraternal Order of Police is pushing to make changes to how the Pension Board operates. The FOP says officers hurt on the job are too often put on [sic] no pay
status for months and sometimes years before appeals court hears their
case.
The FOP is pushing legislation in Springfield and working with the City Council to have more presentation [sic] on the pension board so officers who get injured on the job get their promised benefits.
“There is no reason why any officer should have to suffer a financial loss after an injury serving this city and its citizens and again it’s been an ongoing issue,” FOP president John Cantanzera said.
Citing a couple examples:
Still, many were put on [sic] no pay status after one year of disability benefits and burning through their vacation comp and sick time which [sic] their cases before the pension board took up their case.
Officer Danny Golden was one of the officers there. He was shot in July breaking up a bar fight while he was off duty. He’s paralyzed from the waist down. He has been on [sic] no pay status since October. Sar [sic] Hecker shattered her knee on the job in 2010 and the injury led ger [sic] to a very park [sic] place.
The second case is especially egregious:
- ordered to return to work full duty despite three different doctors orders;
- failed another evaluation with the city doctor;
- was told her benefits would remain intact, but suddenly they weren't;
- Pension Board blamed City, City blamed Pension Board;
- no pay and lapsed insurance - the Pension Board maintained their once-a-month schedule while bills piled up for multiple months, meaning destroyed credit ratings and Past Due notices all over the place
There's also a third case where the Officer was without any sort of disability payments for an extensive period of time. An Officer who not only lost a critical body part and large sections of bone, but also his partner. The Pension Board put him into a no-pay status if you can believe that shit.
These are Officers CATASTROPHICALLY injured performing their jobs being tossed aside by an uncaring and incompetent bureaucracy.
Things have to change immediately.

Catanzara when asked specific questions stated “ over my dead body will you view my credit card receipts !” Here’s a guy who has been to the Police Board four times , gotten CR numbers in other cops while President , during election time kept silent while 2,800 ballots were sitting in the post office and were not counted , lied , half truths and manipulated the truth but hey he’s gonna solve this problem .
There are currently nine field reps working at Lodge 7 . Can you trust someone who changes by - laws , takes two million out of legal defense , uses PPE money illegally , brings false allegations , manipulated an election so he has control of the purse strings of this organization ? At the meeting he stated these two white women were racist ! Wow! Nothing about the 30k he put in his pocket and didn’t run for office , $4,500 spent on steaks in Las Vegas and also a penthouse suite , first class airfare across the country or far too many trips we will never know about . This Union is long overdue for change . If there are criminal acts being made they need to be resolved quickly before the coffers are empty . Not only he but the entire board needs to be held accountable .
A decision will be made in approximately three weeks on the grievance filed about the By - Law changes to allow transparency . Knowing Catanzara as I do he will not comply with any decision made by the Illinois State Lodge . They have been put on notice and now know that they too can be held accountable ! Catanzara needs to be exposed for what he is !
We need to make friends and allies not enemies ! Change may be coming soon ! I agree we need to fix the Pension Board so that all tragically injured officers do not suffer like they have !

So many people have written to you with no reply wondering why the pension is not fully funded do you never get involved with that at all? But now at least you’re getting involved with something. However, the people you described definitely deserve that money but how many coppers pull the bullshit where they get hurt at home or the ones that are fakers get to work then something happens suddenly, that’s what the pension board has to deal with. As someone who has recently worked with the pension board all I can say is it needs to be fixed. It’s a bloated operation with a lot of do nothing jobs that are wasting money. All the political appointment trustees have their people given jobs. There is a lot of people mostly working from home who do nothing every day. The money is handled by outside firms. Have the FOP and PBPA reps explain what each person does. It has become a bloated patronage hiding spot for the politicians. Might be the least responsive agency in the city.
ML needs to be voted off the pension board. Not everyone can or wants to go back light duty. No need to hold up the people who are truly deserving of their medical retirement. The kid was paralyzed from the waist down get him his benefits and move on.
Just remember when you do your job the city nor the pension board has your back. Despite paying into long term disability you will never see that money. Don’t worry though the board still gets their pay even though they show up less than 10 hours a week. They are all making six figures to ruin officers’ lives, remember that.
Seeing this story made me think… how long can many of us survive without getting a paycheck. My guess is not very long. I hope justice comes about for these and other officers in similar positions. It’s disgraceful what this city and pension board does to officers.

1. The 2 million dollars was not taken from legal defense, it was transferred TO legal defense. Legal defense account does not earn interest (by tax law) - the general membership account does. Regular transfers happen all the time since I came on the job in 92.
2. The 990's are on-line....
3. One of these two women now on a personal vendetta because she/they were not appointed to the FOP board has also gotten CR#’s against other police officers, taken over 100K of FOP money when she ran for office, and they made remarks against a female office that was appointed to the Board (see where this is coming from).
4. Why not ask these question at the mic at a general meeting and put J-Cat under the spot light?

My former Lt says he has about 86 on disability he wants to send back to work as L/D.
This is not that nut job female that went after the pension board because she was denied disability. This is not the officer who drove over a curb and demanded disability because her ex bf exempt member was stalking her (allegedly). These are legitimate officers who were just doing their job or took police action and are now maimed. Shame on the pension board. Get this fixed.

He has no control over his ego and big mouth. And he certainly didn’t disappoint at Fridays hearing in Springfield. The recorded audio is quite damning for Johnny Boy and the Catanzara Cabal - especially for those who made the trip with “Big Papi” and gave statements.
The warning signs were there. Inquiries into those warning signs were met with obstruction, bylaws and “rules” were made-up unconventionally and illegally rammed through to keep the truth hidden. The secret meetings to conspire on damage control strategies have begun in earnest; too bad lies, inconsistencies and unsubstantiated counter allegations have already been documented, with many now part of official mediation proceedings, forever memorialized as evidence.
John’s always been the smartest guy in the room - just ask him, he’ll tell ya. Hell, he’s so smart that he provided the rope with which he’ll be hanging himself. The only thing that remains to be seen is which FOP credit card he used to purchase it.

I am catastrophically injured. I am not going into detail about how badly I am injured, but it is pretty bad. I wake up in pain, go to sleep in pain. Pain is my medium, it reminds me of how badly I have to hit the gym five days out of the week to keep it together. I am a meritorious rank, I am not going to reveal that either. However, I am not on duty disability because it is a fiasco, I am much more needed here on the job to mold the next generation of COP, I still believe in this department and the officers in it. I suffer from depression, and the reality that my upper body will never have the strength that it once had, yet I press on. Too much emphasis is placed on mental health, that is a personal choice and you must have the drive to want to be happy and improve your well being, EAP or forced mental heath awareness from a illegal consent decree is NOT going to do anything for me or any one of us. Non-government organizations and their desire to “reimagine” policing is a failed experiment and we need to go back to where we were. I believe that the democrat party and their RINO counterparts are the evil entity in this country and must be destroyed by any means necessary, we will never survive another four years of democrat rule in this country. My hope is that ALL of you who read this blog stop being so Goddamn cynical and talk about the problem, we know what it is and now is the time to mobilize and destroy those making the bad decisions in our country destroying it.
I agree but somebody in the state, City or county had better think outside the box to fund pensions. It blows my mind the cities pension solution is a half assed temporary downtown money pit instead of simply putting slot machines into Midway and O’Hare 2 of the most delayed airports in the country. I retired over 10 years ago after over 30 OTJ. That's the way it was then. This bullshit is way overdue for change. Along with the practice of denying legitimate disabled persons and forcing them to hire one of the small select group of lawyers that handle pension issues just to throw business to their friends.

As a sergeant I can tell you the use of medical would immediately stop if Officers and Sergeants were ALL treated fairly and equally all across the board. When I fill in at certain district I'm ordered by the WOL to send certain officers home mid tour. This is not a coincidence. If we're to help each other out then include EVERYONE. When the medical is utilized frequently then the environment is sick!!!

I am catastrophically injured. I am not going into detail about how badly I am injured, but it is pretty bad. I wake up in pain, go to sleep in pain. Pain is my medium, it reminds me of how badly I have to hit the gym five days out of the week to keep it together. I am a meritorious rank, I am not going to reveal that either. However, I am not on duty disability because it is a fiasco, I am much more needed here on the job to mold the next generation of COP, I still believe in this department and the officers in it. I suffer from depression, and the reality that my upper body will never have the strength that it once had, yet I press on. Too much emphasis is placed on mental health, that is a personal choice and you must have the drive to want to be happy and improve your well being, EAP or forced mental heath awareness from a illegal consent decree is NOT going to do anything for me or any one of us. Non-government organizations and their desire to “reimagine” policing is a failed experiment and we need to go back to where we were. I believe that the democrat party and their RINO counterparts are the evil entity in this country and must be destroyed by any means necessary, we will never survive another four years of democrat rule in this country. My hope is that ALL of you who read this blog stop being so Goddamn cynical and talk about the problem, we know what it is and now is the time to mobilize and destroy those making the bad decisions in our country destroying it.

Used to be that way. Still is but more and more are not successful trying to get back on. City fights it more and in one case went to the appellate court to overturn the circuit courts decision
The only one who constantly went to work at the pension board, was told many times by others you don’t have to be here. But he showed anywa, he worked weekends helping us. Never missed no one’s call. But now he’s gone to care for his family. Now who the fuck do we get

Wayne offered to stay on the Pension Board until his term had run out however, according to guidelines, he could not. 2nd, Metcalfe was reporting for duty every day at the Pension Board unlike someone who is currently on the board and does tax reporting on the side. 3rd, J-Cat WAS NOT REFERING TO METCALFE when he said the FOP was watching who shows up for work. If you were there at the meeting J-Cat specifically named a current elected board member which was not Metcalfe.

Not down playing these examples at all and yes this should not happen however I firmly believe the entire medical/IOD needs to be redone. There is significant abuse of medical and IOD by officers at alarming rates and by young officers especially by those with less than 10 years.. Every district has their regulars and everyone knows who they are!
As a sergeant I can tell you the use of medical would immediately stop if Officers and Sergeants were ALL treated fairly and equally all across the board. When I fill in at certain district I'm ordered by the WOL to send certain officers home mid tour. This is not a coincidence. If we're to help each other out then include EVERYONE. When the medical is utilized frequently then the environment is sick!!!

J-Cat was talking about both of the active duty members detailed to the PB full time. Maybe you should not have actively worked against the other that was Lt. running for that position.
