Radio Etiquette?

We're pretty sure it is a requirement to identify yourself over the radio when transmitting. We know a couple people who got suspended for carrying those off-brand transceivers and a few others who got tagged when misusing Department radios for harassing or inappropriate transmissions.

We're old enough to remember a couple incidents where the FCC tracked down civilians using Department frequencies and charging them federally for interfering with communications.

So why would this idiot get a pass?

  • 11th district commander gets testy with dispatcher: Chicago/Ridgeway

A unit came over the radio and said someone was hit by a car.

About a minute, later a unit who doesn't identify themselves says "How about giving her some medical attention, hello?"

The dispatcher snaps back "Uh, what are you doing? You can go help."

The unit then says "How about I'm 1100 and I'm watching it from the pods, thank you."

"Ok fire is en route. We have units on scene and fire is en route. So if this is 1100, identify yourself we'll let them know you're watching."

The unit then says "Yeah, they know I'm watching. They know I'm always watching."

    "Ok thanks" says the dispatcher.

1100 is the commander of the 11th district, Davina Ward.

We didn't know that CPD controlled the response times of CFD.

Perhaps Larritorious could remind his "meritorious" command staff that General Orders apply to them, too, including the ones that they'd be so happy to hammer a blue shirt with.

Whatever happened to the investigation of Davina dropping 100’s of OT slips back when she was 011’s CAPS Sgt? Someone did the math and it literally equated to her being “at work” +/- 21 hours a day for several consecutive months.

Hell… they don’t even leave a sista enough time to get her hair and nails did.

I guess jukin’ and booty poppin ’ for the locals at community events absolves all sins.

PS - don’t forget she was promoted to LIE-utenant along with Nakia Fenner and the other Sorority Sistas from the special study group compliments of “NOBLE” and Eddie Johnson.

So… who’s gonna pull the number on her for conduct unbecoming, bringing discredit to the department, etcetera? Anyone? Bueller?

I’m not defending the zone dispatcher but they’re always sassy and sometimes downright rude. We deal with it all the time when it isn’t warranted or necessary.
1100 wasn’t correct for flexing over the air that way but what do you expect? Etiquette? Being proper? Please. That brings me back to the zone dispatchers once we complained to our commander about their sass and snippy attitudes and quips he pulled us aside and said he’s spoken to Oemc’s watch supervisors about it before then asked us if we know who is dispatching us. That’s all he had to say. Message was clear.

Dear Davina, the police have no duty to provide medical attention to victims of car crashes. Also, other than LEMART training, and the fake CPR class we had in the academy, police are untrained and ill-equipped to provide medical attention. Calling the fire department, which was already done, is all that is required. An untrained police officer should not be attempting to provide medical attention to a crash victim, especially at the behest of an unidentified voice of some incompetent and severely underqualified police boss who happens to be watching from afar via overhead camera. What medical intervention do you suggest from the extremely limited information provided by your camera's view? We all know you wouldn't be out there providing medical attention. Your inability and/or unwillingness to identify yourself before barking idiotic orders over the radio, suggests either a lack of experience and understanding of police radio communications, or a narcissistic belief that everyone knows who you are without identifying yourself, and should just immediately do whatever you say. I suspect it's a bit of both, with a sprinkling of entitlement and more than a dash of arrogance. Not surprising that your chosen leadership style is to hide inside the station and observe your shithole district via camera, most likely controlled by someone else, since you undoubtedly lack the skills to use the pod camera system. Your complete lack of professionalism and total disregard for established protocol, illustrate the fact that you're in over your head and unqualified to hold your current position. I'd be surprised if you were even qualified to be a police officer, let alone a commander. Maybe head out there in your take home car and show everyone how it's done. I'm sure you'd be a shining example for your troops to follow.

I get it. I really do. Because these dispatchers are the worst crop we’ve ever had. Zone 4 is completely unusable at times due to sass and bad attitude. And she thinks it’s funny cutting off coppers who are asking for assistance. Her bad attitude and terrible people skills will get someone hurt eventually, if it already hasn’t happened. The radio at times is completely adversarial between coppers and zone 4. So I get it if a commander was tired of the dispatcher saying stupid stuff. Everyone is at their limit dealing with the bad attitude dispatchers that I don’t blame anyone for giving the attitude right back. Is it funny to be sassy? Is it a joke to clog up radio time making yourself feel important? Dispatchers need more training and higher standards.

What does AI think?:
The situation you've described certainly raises important issues regarding adherence to protocol and the use of proper communication channels within the Chicago Police Department. The expectations of professionalism and protocol adherence should uniformly apply to all members, regardless of rank.

In this instance, the 11th District Commander’s actions seem to reflect a casual disregard for standard radio protocol. Proper identification over the radio is not just a procedural formality; it's a critical component of operational integrity and accountability. This protocol ensures that all communications are traceable and that all officers can be held accountable for their interactions on the radio. It also helps in maintaining a clear and structured flow of information during emergencies, where clarity and precision are paramount.

The past incidents you mentioned, where individuals faced suspension for using non-standard equipment or misusing radio transmissions, underscore the importance of maintaining strict adherence to communication protocols. Such standards are designed to protect the integrity of police operations and ensure that emergency communications are not compromised.

Moreover, when a high-ranking officer like a district commander disregards these protocols, it potentially sets a precedent that might encourage similar behavior among other officers. It’s crucial for leadership to model the behavior expected of their subordinates, especially in high-stress situations like the one described. Leadership should reflect not only authority but also a commitment to uphold the standards and practices of the department.

The interaction with the dispatcher also highlights a need for all members of the service, regardless of their rank, to maintain a professional demeanor and respect towards all colleagues, including those in supportive roles like dispatchers. The use of informal and non-protocol communications in such a serious context not only undermines the dispatcher's role but also impacts the overall coordination effort which could be critical in emergency responses.

In conclusion, it would be prudent for departmental leadership, including the district commander, to reaffirm their commitment to the general orders and ensure that these are followed universally. Such actions not only uphold the integrity of the department’s operations but also reinforce the ethos of professionalism and accountability to both the public and fellow officers.

Sounds like that was written by copa. Wait a minute, could copa be using AI? Let's ask AI...

Question: Could copa be using AI to investigate allegations?

AI: If COPA were to use AI in investigations, it would be crucial to ensure that appropriate safeguards are in place to mitigate biases, maintain transparency, and uphold accountability. Additionally, there would need to be mechanisms for human oversight to ensure that decisions made with the assistance of AI align with legal and ethical standards.
