That Walgreen’s lasted a little over 20 years putting up with lawlessness. That was very charitable of Walgreen’s because they were probably getting beat up at that location from day one. They’re in business to make a profit, not to cater to an ungrateful, violent, and thieving neighborhood. They don’t have to make politically correct excuses for the offenders that terrorize their business. They just realize they made a bad business decision and close their business. I’m glad they told the truth about why they’re leaving.

Northsider here. Every day the Citizen app has reports of shoplifters at the neighborhood Walgreens – often multiple times a day. This in spite of many items being locked up. And they wonder why many people choose to do their shopping online.
I wonder if Walgreens instructed their managers to call the police and file a report every time a theft occurs? We wouldn’t get many calls but I’ve noticed we get at least 3 “theft in progress” calls from a few in our district just on our watch. I laugh every time because I’m sure they’re documenting it all for this purpose. It will be a matter of time before those few shut their doors in our district. Good for them!
This phenomenon has been going on for years, all over the country. Steal a business to death, violence them to death and they leave or fold. Voila, another "desert" created. And the politicians and citizens who create the climate whine it's everybody else's fault. Consider the WaWa stores. Almost 40 years ago, an employee was shot and killed in one of their NJ stores. In a fairly quiet town. Their response was not to advise employees to wave keyboards at them as Walmart does, they closed that location and never reopened it. Their center city Philadelphia location is constantly under seige by undemonized youths. People sit back at don't understand why they have to take two busses, walk or drive to get to a decent grocery store?!
You should see what Walgreens looks like in states that have consequences for crime. They're so clean, everything is in order and nothing is locked behind cases. We don't have to live like this.

Retired and out of state here. Walgreens by me is a very nice experience. Clean, well-stocked, friendly staff. Music playing softly in the background, Nothing behind plexiglass. No homeless beggars asking for money as I enter or leave. I don't see a problem here.

IMO we should contact the executives of Costco or Aldi and ask them to start a lower end store of good pharmaceuticals and housecleaing products at lower prices and use the same model as Cosco.

She said thanks because she had to log the incident for video retention. The guy walked out, cool as a cucumber. She said, “Well, that’s another aisle we gotta lock up.” Imagine that times 100 incidents every few weeks. What’s the point in even going there. Make your community members accountable for the thefts or don’t complain.
And the Dominick’s in the same mall closed before Dominick’s went out of business. If the customers weren’t stealing, the employees were.
If it made good business sense, someone else would have already done that because it is all about profit. These corporations know you can’t have a business in high crime neighborhoods.
