How Much?

This boggles the mind (story from the CWB blog):
  • An armored car driver has been charged with stealing more than a half-million dollars from his North Side employer. In coins.

Managers at Thillens Cagistics called police to the company warehouse at 4242 North Elston on Monday afternoon when an audit revealed that $537,088.22 had gone missing between May 10 and Aug. 18.
Three months and over half-a-million? It makes that recently convicted idiot selling accident info to lawyers for $10 grand over the years look like an even bigger idiot.

It also makes us wonder about Thillens security measures = half-a-million in coins has to weigh many hundreds of pounds at the very least.

This isn't the end of the stupid though:
  • Company representatives told investigators that 28-year-old Cameron Bowman of Riverdale stole the money by putting incorrect totals into a computer. While Bowman did not admit to any wrongdoing, police said, he did ask if he could leave and return with the money.

Bowman left for about an hour and came back with a Ziploc bag containing $25,300 in $100 bills, police said.
They let him leave? Alone? And he comes back with 5% of the stolen total and expects a walk? Is this when the police were finally called?

Guess what his bail was?
  • Prosecutors charged Bowman with one count of felony theft of more than $500,000. Judge Charles Beach set bail at $30,000, and Bowman went free by posting a 10% deposit bond of $3,000. He is due back in court Monday.
Less than 1% of the total stolen as bail? This guy must have had the biggest shit-eating grin standing in front of the judge.

Rumor is he paid the bail in rolls of dimes and nickels, and Dart was only too happy to accept it.

Something stinks within this happening.
Quarters and dimes weigh the same per dollar. Nickles and pennies are much heavier per dollar.
Quarters weigh .20 ounces.
$537,088 x 4 = 2,148,352 quarters.
2,148,352 x .20 = 429,670.4 ounces.
429,670.4 / 16 = 26,854.4 pounds.
Maybe I'm missing something in my arithmetic?

I can’t believe the theft wasn’t discovered immediately. I worked at a bank for 10 years and every time we got a cash delivery we COUNTED the $$$ IMMEDIATELY. If it didn’t total the exact amount ordered to the penny, we called the armored car service as well as our main office or the Fed, depending on where the order originated. The same process happened when we shipped money out - we counted it and the receiving bank counted it. The armored cars were audited DAILY. Even if he stole money that was going to big stores like WalMart or Target (or coming from stores like that where large amounts of cash go in and out daily) that money should be counted coming and going every single day. Somebody has some very poor cash controls if this was allowed to continue for WEEKS.

Ten years ago, the above would be obvious sarcasm. But today, hell, the absurd has become reality more often than not.

And the Low Bail by this judge Charles Beach isn't even news today. He's just another *woke* asshole in a black robe who probably owes his job to Toni Perriwinkle. Yet, she has the GALL to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to Kenny Construction for a major remodeling job of her 5th floor OFFICE ...yes, office! Take a look up there, it’s a major construction site, walls down, etc. In a previous post someone made a great analogy, they said that when you spend $150,000 remodeling a home, that’s a major remodel job. "So how many years of freedom would you trade for $550,000 tax free?"

Interesting question...I estimate that, weighing my engineer salary against not having to pay for housing, food, etc. in addition to the $500k lump sum it would be worth about eight years in the klink from a strictly economic perspective. Less if the money is collecting interest. Having to poop and shower in a public setting is of course a tremendous drawback, and I'm famously picky about the quality of my pooping and showering amenities, so given that additional cost I'd say the threshold goes down to about four years. Four years of hell, perhaps, but after that four years I'd be able to live comfortably with a part time job.

It's eerily similar to the justification that white collars use to justify working 80 hour weeks at rich but badly run companies.

You'd have to be a bit more specific. I can think of several people that could apply to.

Reminds me of the now infamous Illinois Tollway scammer, "John "Quarters" Boyle"....

8/26/2019 01:27:00 PM

He was pinched again in 2017 for leaving the scene of an accident? Didn't see any case follow up reporting. Mendoza was calling for no special treatment.

All this mention of Boyle is gonna make him feel so warm and fuzzy inside.
Saw him at Superdawg with his fat, greasy POS friend, the gun-totin, City of Chicago Inspector Ron Calicchio.
Kass would write about these two nitwits every now and then...

I read this story again last night and don’t believe it. You mean this man stole between 250 and 300lbs of coins everyday he worked? If he’s stealing that much and not getting caught immediately, he should be able to keep the money and the hernia.

An example of specialization. Criminals can make crime pay, while the CPD guy cited for padding his pocket on referrals obviously could not. How much would anyone wager that the actual amount stolen is different than that given on the insurance claim? Me thinks there is more than one crook in this case.
