We Have the Power?
We've been told in a one of the recent comment sections that we (SCC) have the power to stop this Hampton controversy, that we can mobilize the cops across the city, that we ought to be leading the fight, be it a march, an informational picket line or a job action (which we remind everyone, the advocating of such action is grounds for termination).
You flatter us, but all we have is a little website that gets 1,300 visits a day by about 600 people, mostly Chicago Police Officers. Occasionally, we get the media bigwig (or their people) dropping us a line, usually about some nonsense they want background on, but in reality we are a tiny fish in a large ocean. We feel we have been giving it our all, linking to articles and other websites that are of the same opinion as we are. But we have no ability to organize a bus trip or protest downtown. That would be the arena of our union. We see they have addressed the controversy, but no word on what they intend to do about it. We assume that would be on the agenda at the Board of Directors meeting tomorrow or the General Meeting 21 March. Both dates provide plenty of time for us to get the word out - which is our main function.
Again, keep writing to your aldercreatures. Keep phoning or e-mailing the media. Let's get a little heft behind this effort. We're doing it, here and in the open. Crimefile is actually threatening to fly into town in support of us and we for one would welcome a visit. Has anyone reached out to the Nevada CPD chapter? Gotta be some vets out there who remember Gilhooly and Rappaport.

I apologize for coming off thread but I have something to get off my chest. Today the Supreme Court found that universities and colleges that receive federal monies must allow Armed Forces recruiters on campus.
Can you even imagine that these institutions of higher learning believed they had this right to block American Military Recruiters from campus. Most of these institutions were prominant law schools who felt that since the military policy of "dont ask, dont tell" exist,th institutions felt their right to free speech or right of association existed. These institutions dont question their free speech or free association when it comes to accepting federal money. The real part that frosts my ass is that the Supreme court told the universities that their free speech rights allowed them to organize protest and rallies when recruiters show up. Fine now some fairly intelligent kid who has choises when it comes to which recruiter he wants to see i.e. IBM, Microsoft, Allstate...ect. ect., decides that he might want to explore his options in the United States Military. This kid is going to have to go through a gauntlet of protesting assholes who live under the very freedoms that our great military provides.
It makes me sick seeing people protest the people who provide the freedoms that we all possess.

My heart goes out to Chicago's Finest. I grew up in the Jackson Park Highlands in the Grand Crossing district at 75th and Maryland. I was only 10 years old when Officer Rappaport was killed in the line of duty. He and the tall smiling black officer were role models to the kids in my neighborhood. My family and my neighbors all attended the service at the synagogue at 69th and Stony Island. We also went to Officer Gilhooly's wake. He was only 21 years old. Both services were a sea of proud blue uniformed policemen.
For the life of me, I can't understand how anyone would try to honor the leader of a group that advocated the murder of police officers.
Mayor Daley, Senator Obama and the clergy of all races and religions should condemn this outrage.

Oh SCC, how you underestimate your blog! 600 police, you say? I'll give you that! Lets say 400(ish) are regulars, 400 from districts and units, all over the city. I would venture to say, EVERY district and Unit is represented here (Here is where we say 'HI' to each other, waves and handshakes from across the room, and yes, those frumpy, disgruntled bastards in the corner are from IAD). Active and retired have all posted regularly here, and keep tabs on what is going on. Where you ask? On ONE blog! HUMPH, Let me see here, oh yes, there it is, the ever famous (and almost infamous) blue background! HERE!
On to other maters in your post: Our Union. I, for one, am not in constant update with our Union, its policies, etc, etc. However, seeing the posts here about our Union, well, one would guess why we would seek other venues to speak out about our "avenue" problem. It doesn’t seem like the Union is taking a “pro-active” stand, however, I am probably (and usually) wrong. The Media. Does any one really think those dick heads are supporting us? YES, there are a FEW. A FEW, and that is it! And to them, the ones who get "the truth" out, the ones who support us, a heart felt thanks! To the rest, well, not too many of us would, if you were on fire, piss on you to put you out! Our Elected Officials? Well, someone else beat me to that one, they follow and respond to one thing, and one thing only; the green of cash.
Have I, or any other RESPONSIBLE individual said anything about "civil unrest", "picketing" or “job action”? Hell no! That is the exact opposite of what and who we are! Rodney King Trial not go the way you want it? Your favorite team wins the NBA/NFL…? Someone gets killed in an accident running from the police on a motorcycle? The answer to a lot of people is: Burn the City! To us, the Police, well, our job is to stand up for what is right! Maintain some order! We need to take a stand, now, on the 29th! I would like to advocate a modicum of “professional courtesy” while we are at City Hall. (Say, for instance, not writing any tickets while we are in the neighborhood, would be a great idea. Kind of fucked up standing up for one thing, while getting nailed for $50. Not advocating illegal parking, however…it is limited in that area!)
