Coyote Attacks

  • Since Friday, two children have been attacked. In another incident, a coyote was headed for a toddler when it was scared off.
  • [...] a coyote ran up, grabbed Rowley's 2-year-old daughter by the head and tried to drag her down the driveway.
  • On Friday, a 2-year-old girl was attacked by a coyote while playing in a sandbox at Alterra Park in Chino Hills, suffering puncture wounds on the buttocks. The next day, another toddler was approached by a coyote in the same park, but the animal was scared off by the child's father.
Coyote sightings in Chicago, especially up on the north side, are so frequent as to not merit media coverage unless extraordinary - the infamous chase at the Water Filtration plant and the Quizno's coyote to name two recent occurrences.

Now compare a coyote (20 to 50 pounds of aggressive dog) to a cougar (up to 150 pounds of killing machine) and try to claim the police were wrong killing the Roscoe Village cat.

No sane, rational, thinking human being would ever imagine doing so.

there is a reason we killed most of them over 100 yrs ago......they sometimes eat small people !

Don't forget the pitbulls. They are more dangerous than coyotes.

Why didn't you cops use pepper spray or a tazer? Too afraid to get close? I bet if the cougar was handcuffed you would have beat him up.

Wasn't 1120 (3rd) on a job trying to catch a coyote some weeks back?

If I worked for 1120 I'd be running & hiding like a coyote!

I'd stay down on jobs since I write really slow & take lunch right when you called an outdoor roll call.

A coyote will not generally attack humans. There are plenty of them here in Chicago who survive on small prey (sometimes pets) and garbage. Now....a cougar on the other hand.....

Coyote was captured in Hyde Park by 021 officers and an animal control not too long ago. Vicintity of 53rd & Blackstone. An ederly couple living there called the police and said there was a wolf in their back yard. Once there the owner wanted no harm to come to the elusive, snarling coyote (you believe that?) At one point, the coyote attemted to leap an 8 foot fence. It Damn near almost cleared it too! Before the animal was about to be put out of it's misery, he was captured without incident. The Metra and various railroad tracks are a streamline to the city. Also since there's so much brush along these routes, there's probably mice and rabbits. Theyre here. Falcons too. So keep an eye on your small children and pets running and playing outside.

Be advised, there's only one animal control officer authorized to carry a firearm, and a dart gun. The others? Just a rope on a stick. Animal control officers take long enough to get to a scene, imagine waiting for the only authorized Animal Control officer with the dart gun to show up? I THINK NOT!
