As Predicted...

Once again, that silly little thing known as the "free market" shows that the market itself is the best means to effect change:
  • The struggling economy has dealt a bad hand to the nation's usually robust gambling business, a downturn made even worse in Illinois, where the state's nearly year-old smoking ban has proved unhealthy to casinos.

Among those paying the steepest prices are local governments, charities and their clients, who have come to rely on gambling tax receipts.

The big gambling states— Nevada, New Jersey and Mississippi —are off 5 percent to 7 percent in casino revenue. But the picture is worst in Illinois, where casino revenue is down 20.3 percent this year.

Gambling officials estimate that the state will get between $150 million and $160 million less in taxes, most of it earmarked for education. Statewide, the eight communities with casinos will see $20 million to $25 million less than they took in last year, officials estimate.
And where oh where will the government make up those gross tax receipts? Tax hikes? But that will further stagnate the economy, wouldn't it? Yep. It's called a "vicious cycle" and we predicted it here months ago when the nanny-statism started getting completely out of control along with the monstrous tax hikes. Now let's see how much Chicago tavern receipts are falling due to the smoking ban. People are shopping elsewhere. People are spending elsewhere. Daley is selling everything that isn't nailed down, and when he sells all the revenue generating apparatus, there won't be a thing left as the middle class flees Chicago a la Detroit in the 1970s.

Actually, gambling, smoking, boozing, whoring and doping are God's gift to mankind.

Oh, wait, it's the freedom to choose whether or not to gamble, smoke, booze, whore, and dope up that is God's gift.

Must have gotten God mixed up with the other guy.

Why not let them smoke in the casinos and liquor only taverns? How about letting the owners decide if they want to be smokefree or not?

Don't sweat that revenue loss. When the smokers who are going out of state to gamble all drop dead from cancer, the remainder will come back to play the machines in Illinois.

The other day the news showed the Obama economic team at the large oval table. I just had to laugh! Everyone at that table, his "go-to" people for magic money solutions, has bankrupted a state, city, or company. They are all HUGE failures and have bilked the taxpayers for trillions.
WE ARE SCREWED!

Those of you who voted for "change", buy your tin cup now, you'll need it.

SCC, I wish you would have said even more. Cameras everywhere. Dept of revenue giving tickets out for being two inches in a tow zone or bus stop. The city, county, and state have bullied the honest tax payer into submission. I don't leave the house unless its to go to the suburbs. Its amazing what free parking will do for a business.

I didn't even mention I'm afraid to have a drink with dinner on the rare occasion I go to a restaurant. I just stay home and use the phone and have food delivered. I can relax at home. For the time being its not illegal to have a beer or two in front of your TV.

The rule is simple to follow. More gov't means less freedom. More Gov't means less for everybody elses pocket book.

I'm sorry but this is a true statement. Anyone who votes dummycrat is a vote for less liberty. That has been a fact since this country was founded.

Do not forget that Illiois taxed the casinos at 70%, The casinos in result are paying out less. People will travel to Indiana for the better pay out. Careful folks we will now see the incompetence on a national scale.

Can't wait to see the new 2009 taxes the LIB-O-CRATS will soon be laying on us. I'm sure we will again lead the Country in Highest Taxes Paid by its residents. Be ready to fork over whatever raise we get right back to Crook County/Shitcago. A 3 1/2 % raise will be worth about 1/4 % the way I have it figured. A 4&1/2% raise would be roughly almost a percent more for me by time it will reach my pocket. It's over , Shitcago-U.S.= DOOMED.

After I retired, I got a job dealing blackjack in a casino to get the quarters I needed for social security. People bitched
because they lost their money; one guy, a CPD dispatcher, threatened to meet me in the parking lot and kick my ass. Some cried because they lost the car payment, and women offered to meet me in the parking lot and be nice to me if I let them win. They were stupid. The games are set up so that if you play, you eventually lose.
I enjoyed taking their money, even though I didn't get to keep it, figuring it would teach them a lesson. But, since people kept coming in to make donations, I guess that didn't work. Finally, when they beefed about losing, I shrugged, told them to look around
at the employees, lights, cocktail waitresses, and all, and asked them, "Does this look like a charitable institution to you?"
I got fired, but not before I got my social security quarters.

Not that my opinion means anything but with the way the economy is going, wouldnt it make sense for the individual bars/casinos/licensed business owners, etc...to decide if their businesses are being hurt by the smoking ban? If these businesses are losing revenue by lack of customers and are forced to close, doesnt the state, city, counties, lose money when said businesses have to close? No business licenses, no liquor licenses, no sales tax incomes???? I don't know too much about this and don't have any business experience, other than being a customer, but it kinda makes sense to me that the state, county, and city are forcing these businesses to shut down. I am not a smoker, and I love going to have a drink in an establishment that doesn't allow smoking, however, there are alot of businesses hurting because of this ban. If you allow Business "A" to determine that they want a smoke-free business, then let the owner have a smoke-free business and the customers decide if that is the business they want to patronize. If Business "B" wants to determine that they want to allow smoking, let the owner have a smoking business. Maybe they could implement a $100.00 smoking license and mandate a sign on the front stating "THIS IS A SMOKING ESTABLISHMENT" This seems like a win-win solution for all. Employess can determine if they want to work in such an establishment and consumers can decide if they want to patronize said establishment. In a year from now, they can re-evaluate the situation and see if this helps the casinos/restaurants/taverns and also increases revenues in the cities, counties, and state. Just a suggestion

Amen to that, Nashville lets the bars decide and signs are posted so you know walking in if it's smoking or not, makes too much sense to be implemented here, instead they will let these places close, losing there taxes and then raise property taxes, alog with everything else, to make up the lost revenue.

Where's my cup of coffee I'm supposed to get while locked up? If you check the rules prisoners are supposed to get coffee with their sandwich. The lockup gets a supply of coffee every month, so where does this coffee go?
