Meter Deal Rushed Through
- Parking meter holidays will be a thing of the past under a proposed privatization of the city's system a City Council committee approved today.
- ...parkers will have to feed the meters seven days a week, all year round.
- The company would be allowed to raise rates every year for the next five years. Meters that cost a quarter for an hour would increase to $1 an hour around Jan. 1.
And all of this is forced through the City Council in under 72 hours, no public debate, no hearings as to what the City is going to do as it no longer has control over a physical asset for 75 years and has to fill another budget shortfall within a few years.
Daley must be really planning to not be around in 2011 when all these questions come due.

Is there a price on privitising O'Hare yet. Sell, sell , sell!
I doubt if any member of the rat Daley family has EVER put a coin in a parking meter.
Would have been a nice show of support for us if da mayor included a parking exemption for cops going to court.
This is just one more reason to do and buy anything and everything outside of the city limits!
And when I retire from this shithole I am gone for sure! Sell everything and move away forever!
Dear DICK,
I will no longer be patronizing any establishemtn in the city were the meter needs to be fed to fatten your wasteful wallet. You are taxing all of us out of the city. Personally, We do all of our shopping outside of the city and county as well. Very little of my salary is spend in your city. I am just here for the paycheck. NO more writing tickets for you(missy can handle that)or making you any money. Just wait until I see one of those private meter vehicles illegally parked. I am snapping a photo and writing them a ticket. No breaks for them. I also nailed one of your gps private contractors yesterday who were trying to fix those junks devices you installed in our cars.
Forced through....just like our contract. You politicians make me sick!
Sounds unconstitutional. How can a private company control parking on OUR public streets. Also what does this do to the District index on parkers. It would seem it should go down in places were a lot of meter tickets are normally written. Why would any copper write a ticket to help out this crappy, thieving idea.
If one of us ever writes a meter ticket again we are complete softballs.
will handicapped vehicles (with handicapped plates or placards in the rearview mirror) get courtesy at the meters? who will be issuing tickets at these leased meters? cpd? meter maids? private employess of the meter company? i hope NO CPD writes any tickets at meters
The leasing of Chicago! What is left to lease?
Can we install I-Pass to get in and out of neighborhoods? How about having all cars registered in Chicago to have a cab like meter device installed in their cars where you have to pay additional monies for every minute you are on a Chicago street. Lease the fire, police and education to Halliburton. Require that tax-paying, gainfully employed Chicago residents can never, ever move out of the city. You are a city resident for life! Someone has to keep paying these taxes
Last one to leave Chicago, please turn off the lights.
WHY WASTE MONEY FOR A PUBLIC "DEBATE/HEARING"??? THE CITY DOES WHAT IT WANTS TO ANYWAYS.
CPD shouldn't write tickets for parkers anymore. Why? City resources pay for CPD..while the private company is in charge of managing parking meters, they should foot the bill for enforcement.
Of course there wasn't debate - there was a phone poll on the news the other night and something like 88% of respondents think it's a bad idea. Who cares what the citizens think..what are we going to do, overthrow the local government?
the last act of a corrupt government is to loot as much as possible.
Dose he have a legal right to privitize everything (Selling Off for Olympics), Maybe he should get a new profession Used Car Sales!
Is Mayor Shortshanks going to be Mayor for 75 more years?
What happens in twenty years with another Mayor and he oe she takes them back?
These assholes are doing everything possible to keep people away from this city. The suburbs are developing very nice night life areas, i.e. Naperville, Downers Grove, Orland Park. Why drive into Chicago and pay these outrageous prices for parking and taxes when you can stay in your own town and enjoy a nice night out. Chicago residents are going to these areas also. Why they think raising taxes and fees will keep people coming here are beyond me.
"...what are we going to do, overthrow the local government?

That's a thought.
off topic--from suntimes article about demotions of shields, franklin, sodini, willliams
"Talent and loyalty were keys to their decline,” the source said."
reading between lines--LACK of talent, LOYALTY only to self
Can the stuttering runt be impeached yet?
All city owned properties up for sale? Skyway, Midway Airport, parking meters? No surprise, we all knew city hall has been for sale for years. Pat Fitzgerald, hurryup before Obama puts a new federal attorney for the northeran district of Il
What will happen when there are no other city assets to sell off? Since this is now in the hands of a private firm will we still be writing meter violations? Sell everything and then what?
DEAR DICK I WILL RETIRE IN TWO YEARS LEAVE THIS SHITTY CITY AND MOVE TO PLAINFIELD,ILL. ALSO PLAINFIELD ANNOUNCE THAT THEY WILL BEGIN BUILDING IN 2009 A TWO MILE LONG RIVERWALK ALONG THE FOX RIVER SIMILIAR TO ONE IN NAPERVILLE. GLAD TO SEE SOME CITIES SPEND THERE MONEY WISELY NOT ON WELFARE PROGRAMS
Forced through....
Just like the Children’s Museum, Megs Field, and our bullshit 2% pay raise, City council can vote any way they want… Just remember, whatever the Mayor wants, he gets…. What a democracy! Meanwhile, my snow won’t be plowed on nights and weekends, the aldermen get a 6% “cost of living increase”, I’m payin’ 10.25% in taxes, as Maggie Daley says “let them eat cake” between pint-glasses of Scotch.
Sounds like its time for a revolution!
"...Would have been a nice show of support for us if da mayor included a parking exemption for cops going to court..."
Whoa Sparky--How did that thought even enter your brain?
For that, please report to Random Drug Testing, 3510 S. Michigan Ave.
Most of us aren't going to be around for the 75 years of the lease and the way the economy is going, who's to say that the parking meter lease will be worth shit to the private company in 5 years. I don't drive downtown, so fuck it, take the money.
And the $150 million dollars goes straight into the olympics fund. Between the meters, the skyway, midway and the parking garages downtown daley's olympic fund has surpassed one billion dollars so he can show the olympic commitee he has suitable assets to fund this dream of his.
What's next for lease, the City Parks?
Pretty soon Shortshanks will have a tollgate at every intersection. People will have to buy a device similar to an I-Pass to drive within the city limits and pedestrians will need one to walk around. The next thing after that will be over the head devices worn
by anyone coming into the city, which will enable them to breathe the air. They will be rented out to the city by a connected private contractor for $1,000 per year & Shortshanks will charge us $10,000 per year. Coming soon: residential water meters. The midget will dress up as an Arab oil sheik to announce that one.
I like the BS of putting some of the cash in a "rainy day fund".
Look out the window Mayor -it's pouring out mother-fucker
Is it just me or do most of the people reading this blog think that the need for term limits and/or voter recall should be introduced into law at local, county and state level? Hmmmmm....Nah, what was I even thinking.
SCC SEZ:
"Daley must be really planning to not be around in 2011 when all these questions come due."
######################################
CORRECT!!!!
And what else will not be around ?!?!?
1) $1.82 billion in leasing fees for the Chicago Skyway bridge;
2) $2.5 billion in net proceeds for the Midway Airport lease deal;
3) $1.2 billion in leasing fees for our parking meters;
So, what happens to Richie Rich in 2011? My money, (if I have any left!), is on Richie becoming the Shiek of Chicago, in a vote railroaded through the city council without debate, which will allow Shortshanks to continue in control of all city business FOREVER, without having to go through any explanation to anyone!
Oh, yeah, did I mention that each of the daley kids will be hired for life, as a special consultant to the city at $1 million per year!
Do you mean to tell me that those from Mt Greenwood/Beverly et al will have to pay $6.50 an hour just to park their house??? What about when the southside hillbilly drives his house downtown??? Can he park on a side street or will he be forced to pay $6.50 an hour to park his house at a non-city meter??? HAHAHAHAHAHAH
so $1 billion!!! WOO HOO looks like that $429 million gap is closed! no reason way dick can cry broke now! No way he can deny a retro check now, right?
Why can't the city control meters and raise the fee? Collect the money? This private contractor is going to raise them every year for the next 75 years and we won't see a dime. Same with Midway/ Skyway. No business sense!
The Aldercreep said she didn't have time to review and come up with a different plan and that they didn't have any options. THATS WHAT YOUR PAID SIX FIGURES FOR! A child could do your job!
I want to know what economics school the dum-dums downtown went to. They are quick to privatize all of these assets (remember the Skyway?) for a one-time windfall, and then have no plan for the future. Maybe that is their plan. Each year, find one big ticket item to "privatize" for $1 billion or more, and then they can balance their budget. Eventually, all city services can be privatized and they can save tons of money by firing all of the city employees.
I never write meters anyway but for sure won't write them now. If a private company owns them and they are going to jack up the prices that much than they can afford to hire their own meter maids. Question, if a private company owns them and the ticket one receives is from a private company, why would you pay it? They can't boot your car, their not going to take you to court for a $50 dollar ticket. I think they're going to regret leasing the meters.
It would be interesting to see who are the "investors" in this private company....media...anyone???? Kass????

And just were are you going to go?? The election of Obama brought this type of corruption to the WHOLE country!
Of course there wasn't debate - there was a phone poll on the news the other night and something like 88% of respondents think it's a bad idea. Who cares what the citizens think..what are we going to do, overthrow the local government?

Yet King Richard II gets 72% of the vote?!?!
it passed just now. mell said "you wanted time to read it through.....how many of us actually read this stuff anyway"
laughter erupted from aldermen.
i am sure they have not considered the effect of higher parking fees coupled with the highest sales tax in the nation.
why anyone, in these trying times, would continue to shop, dine or drink in chicago is beyond me.
I think the author of comment #10 is on to something!! But let's take it a step further to include all of CookCounty so Richie & Todd can both benefit. Insert a "Microchip" into all babies born in CookCounty. Track their use of air, water, streets, schools,
food, clothing, parks, etc. and charge accordingly."The gift that keeps on giving." Think of the magnificent bureaucracy that would be created-the Jobs created for their loyal foot soldiers. The tax implications are endless!!
why doesnt king richi lease out the mayors seat?
How much money could the city save by getting rid of the useless aldermen...afterall Im sure the city would survive w/o them..The city should also leave cook county and become their own county.
Then my tax dollars woudnt have to go to BobbiSteeles pension and the other crooks there
OK, who writes the tickets for expired meters now??? and who gets any fine money??? If it is the city, maybe it is a good deal (I doubt it though)if cops are gonna be "responsible" to write em but the city does not get the "rev" from the tickets I say all meters shall be vandalized
Who's Going To Write The Tickets For These Meter Violations ?
Should not The Expense of the Ticket Writer be included in the meter fee's ?
To the question of why was it passed by City Council ?
Are You Kidding?
What ever the mayor wants they would vote for.
They know where their bread is buttered.
DUE TO LACK OF WORK ON THE OUTSIDE I AM CANCELING MY CELL PHONES AND CABLE. NET AND YMCA MEMBERSHIP ARE NEXT.
NOT GOING TO GET MY TAX DOLLARS FROM THAT.
BUT 34 BILLION FOR THE BIG THREE? WTF
What will be left of the city? What else is Daley going to sell? This is public property, not Daley property and not aldermen's property. Why isn't there a hearing on this? The citizens of Chicago should be furious on Herr Daley's continuous monarch sellings of the city of Chicago This is not your propery to sell mayor! Enough!
parking meters:
watch for some BIG changes in the (private) enforcements laws. they're going to change drastically. this new group will set up their own rules. immediate tows FOR SURE. their own lot to store the towed vehicles, FOR SURE. their own people to write these vehicles full time, FOR SURE. by the way which one of Shortshanks nephews is connected to the company(s) that just bought them????
aldercreatures get a 6% raise and you wonder why it got passed so fast?? c'mon, ya can't be that naive.......
is the press questioning all this selling? lol, fat chance of that. Combine is really the new name.
By the time you retire Millenium Park will have been renamed the Richard J. Daley Memorial Park.
It nice to see another infusion of cash for the 2016 Olympics. First it was the Skyway's BILLION, the privitization of Midway 3 billion?and now it the Parking Meter company pony'n up a BILLION plus.
Thats over 5 BILLION Dollars.
That begs the question of where is all that money going?? Why cant we get a raise that will allows us to live without humping a second job.
Whats happening? Isnt someone accountable somewhere?? Oh wait we live in the Peoples Rebublic of Chicago where Comrade Daley knows whats best for all of us.
Dumb Question: Does The Mayor Have The Authority; Buy Written Law To Sell Off These Properties?
Don't These Issues Have to be voted on?
I understand it will just be a formality.
He will get whatever he wants.
That being said: are there no rules and regulations for selling off the common land of Chicago?
