Meter Deal Rushed Through

  • Parking meter holidays will be a thing of the past under a proposed privatization of the city's system a City Council committee approved today.
  • ...parkers will have to feed the meters seven days a week, all year round.
  • The company would be allowed to raise rates every year for the next five years. Meters that cost a quarter for an hour would increase to $1 an hour around Jan. 1.
And all of this is forced through the City Council in under 72 hours, no public debate, no hearings as to what the City is going to do as it no longer has control over a physical asset for 75 years and has to fill another budget shortfall within a few years.

Daley must be really planning to not be around in 2011 when all these questions come due.

And when I retire from this shithole I am gone for sure! Sell everything and move away forever!

Dear DICK,
I will no longer be patronizing any establishemtn in the city were the meter needs to be fed to fatten your wasteful wallet. You are taxing all of us out of the city. Personally, We do all of our shopping outside of the city and county as well. Very little of my salary is spend in your city. I am just here for the paycheck. NO more writing tickets for you(missy can handle that)or making you any money. Just wait until I see one of those private meter vehicles illegally parked. I am snapping a photo and writing them a ticket. No breaks for them. I also nailed one of your gps private contractors yesterday who were trying to fix those junks devices you installed in our cars.

Sounds unconstitutional. How can a private company control parking on OUR public streets. Also what does this do to the District index on parkers. It would seem it should go down in places were a lot of meter tickets are normally written. Why would any copper write a ticket to help out this crappy, thieving idea.

The leasing of Chicago! What is left to lease?

Can we install I-Pass to get in and out of neighborhoods? How about having all cars registered in Chicago to have a cab like meter device installed in their cars where you have to pay additional monies for every minute you are on a Chicago street. Lease the fire, police and education to Halliburton. Require that tax-paying, gainfully employed Chicago residents can never, ever move out of the city. You are a city resident for life! Someone has to keep paying these taxes

Last one to leave Chicago, please turn off the lights.

CPD shouldn't write tickets for parkers anymore. Why? City resources pay for CPD..while the private company is in charge of managing parking meters, they should foot the bill for enforcement.

Of course there wasn't debate - there was a phone poll on the news the other night and something like 88% of respondents think it's a bad idea. Who cares what the citizens think..what are we going to do, overthrow the local government?

These assholes are doing everything possible to keep people away from this city. The suburbs are developing very nice night life areas, i.e. Naperville, Downers Grove, Orland Park. Why drive into Chicago and pay these outrageous prices for parking and taxes when you can stay in your own town and enjoy a nice night out. Chicago residents are going to these areas also. Why they think raising taxes and fees will keep people coming here are beyond me.

Just like the Children’s Museum, Megs Field, and our bullshit 2% pay raise, City council can vote any way they want… Just remember, whatever the Mayor wants, he gets…. What a democracy! Meanwhile, my snow won’t be plowed on nights and weekends, the aldermen get a 6% “cost of living increase”, I’m payin’ 10.25% in taxes, as Maggie Daley says “let them eat cake” between pint-glasses of Scotch.

Pretty soon Shortshanks will have a tollgate at every intersection. People will have to buy a device similar to an I-Pass to drive within the city limits and pedestrians will need one to walk around. The next thing after that will be over the head devices worn
by anyone coming into the city, which will enable them to breathe the air. They will be rented out to the city by a connected private contractor for $1,000 per year & Shortshanks will charge us $10,000 per year. Coming soon: residential water meters. The midget will dress up as an Arab oil sheik to announce that one.

SCC SEZ:

"Daley must be really planning to not be around in 2011 when all these questions come due."

######################################

CORRECT!!!!

And what else will not be around ?!?!?

1) $1.82 billion in leasing fees for the Chicago Skyway bridge;

2) $2.5 billion in net proceeds for the Midway Airport lease deal;

3) $1.2 billion in leasing fees for our parking meters;

So, what happens to Richie Rich in 2011? My money, (if I have any left!), is on Richie becoming the Shiek of Chicago, in a vote railroaded through the city council without debate, which will allow Shortshanks to continue in control of all city business FOREVER, without having to go through any explanation to anyone!

Oh, yeah, did I mention that each of the daley kids will be hired for life, as a special consultant to the city at $1 million per year!

I want to know what economics school the dum-dums downtown went to. They are quick to privatize all of these assets (remember the Skyway?) for a one-time windfall, and then have no plan for the future. Maybe that is their plan. Each year, find one big ticket item to "privatize" for $1 billion or more, and then they can balance their budget. Eventually, all city services can be privatized and they can save tons of money by firing all of the city employees.

I never write meters anyway but for sure won't write them now. If a private company owns them and they are going to jack up the prices that much than they can afford to hire their own meter maids. Question, if a private company owns them and the ticket one receives is from a private company, why would you pay it? They can't boot your car, their not going to take you to court for a $50 dollar ticket. I think they're going to regret leasing the meters.

I think the author of comment #10 is on to something!! But let's take it a step further to include all of CookCounty so Richie & Todd can both benefit. Insert a "Microchip" into all babies born in CookCounty. Track their use of air,water,streets,schools,
food,clothing,parks,etc. and charge accordingly."The gift that keeps on giving." Think of the magnificent bureaucracy that would be created-the Jobs created for their loyal foot soldiers. The tax implications are endless!!

By the time you retire Millenium Park will have been renamed the Richard J. Daley Memorial Park.

It nice to see another infusion of cash for the 2016 Olympics. First it was the Skyway's BILLION, the privitization of Midway 3 billion?and now it the Parking Meter company pony'n up a BILLION plus.

Thats over 5 BILLION Dollars.

That begs the question of where is all that money going?? Why cant we get a raise that will allows us to live without humping a second job.

Whats happening? Isnt someone accountable somewhere?? Oh wait we live in the Peoples Rebublic of Chicago where Comrade Daley knows whats best for all of us.
