Fights at the Fountain? On the 3rd of July, the Fountain becomes the asshole of the city. Every jagoff, wannabe-jagoff, asshole, and fuck-up gravitates towards the Fountain.
Ban fountains. That'll solve everything.
Two shots fired by the savage just inside the taste at Congress and Michigan. No one hit so it never happened, per the Dept, City, Media. This is getting worse and worse every year. The savages are out of control. Its going to take a small child getting killed by one of these animals before the City or the media acknowledges that the Taste is a dangerous place to be. Call it racist all you want, all you have to do is open your eyes to see who is causing all the violence.
The media is so full of shit! There ain't no way that an Olympic Associate who might have been there would every agree to have that circus here after tonites escapades!
Huge fights at the exits, especially all along Michigan.
I think I heard 3 or 4 10-1 calls, and when all the police showed up, they were STILL outnumbered!
Not trying to start any racial stuff, but WTF, why is it that one certain group cannot act right at an outdoor festival?
9 out 10 of the problems today were from one group, while the other group did have some locked up, the main culprits were from the minority-majority.
Maybe it is time to start charging $15 a head to get in, and enforcing a dress code too. Kind of like...you have to have pants up above your ass, and actually sitting on your waist - that would be a great start.

About 30 kings, all decked out walking towards the taste at Roosevelt. Within 3 minutes, numerous calls of battery in progress regarding M/4's all in black and gold. Over the next 15 or so minutes, there were about 20 in custody. No other purpose but to start shit. Animals
great job by all the men and women in blue tonight. multiple 10-1's (by the way, a gang fight isnt a 10-1 in my book, just let them beat the shit out of each other) great back up and responses. everyone went home safe as far as i know. and believe it or not, we got alot of "thank you's" from many citizens as our contract was blowing up right in front of our own eyes, but those fireworks looked real pretty.

South end of the Taste had the GDs line up 50 deep walking and throwing up signs right through the taste. Later after the fireworks the Kings were at least 50 deep throwing up signs.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the fireworks started early. Fights were breaking out everywhere after 8:30 pm. The fireworks started at 8:53 pm by my cell phone.

Hey SCC! Love your blog! My nephew, who attended the Taste last night with friend's and family called me around 2200 hrs. and stated that the place was up for grabs. He related that they had witnessed ramdom fights all over the place. He also stated that P.O.'s in BDU's where trying to stop the fights. So, I turned on the new's, checked all the channels, however none of the violence was mentioned. The news people kept saying what a great evening everybody was having and interviewed a select few who had nothing but good things to say about the event.
I was hoping they would find my nephew and inteview him!! He would have told it like it is.
Numerous chases over the zone and multiple weapons recovered. Several 10-1's called (and several 10-1's canceled not sure the reasons.) There was also an aggravated battery with a vehicle not sure the details. And a Unit did go over the air asking for assistance to unload a shotgun. There were a lot of weapons out there and groups of multiple gang members. More of the females with the gang bangers need to be searched.

Did not attend "freaknik" and the "illegals party"! Went to naperville ribfest great time, talked to a naperville copper by entrance, he let my family in as a courtesy, so no admission, spent money on great ribs, corn, great bands nothing like the taste of shit! No animals roaming around, had a great time!

The offender was a 15 year old kid who was a Gangster Disciple. The weapon was a fully loaded 20 ga. sawed off shotgun. Offender was seen flashing gang signs by a Lieutenant who then called it out to responding units after seeing the shotgun's grip sticking out of a backpack. The offender ran through a crowded Grant park where many families and their kids were present,then ran across Lake Shore Dr. with the shotgun in his hands. Offender was apprehended at the water's edge at the lake front, shotgun recovered, no one hurt....all in a days work, thats how we do it on the CPD!!
I must say...a lot of thugs...but also,a lot of police...once again...the fountain and rose garden were problamatic...but we owned the night...great response by all!....multiple fights,multiple 10-1's...but police were quick to crush it...a lot of hands on by white shirts/blue shirts.we challenged them a lot...also...the crowd was cheering when police would lock people up...i think most people that showed up wanted us to take care of the animal...very well ran this year....LIKE IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN!

That happened last year too... that goofy female Lt. from the traffic section was calling 10-1's for everything.
Maybe these folks should be sent back to the academy and retrained so they know the difference between an emergency and a 10-1.

Funny thing at the taste tonight. There was a 10-1 going on at the usual spot, the fountain, when someone got on the radio yelling shots fired. Almost immediately another person got on the air saying they were monitoring POD 1 and insisted that there were no shots fired. I think I'll take the word of the guy on the ground over a camera jockey. Sounded like they were trying to deter shots fired from being put on the air.

So basically the only thing different this year was that nobody was actually hit by gunfire. Message to Jody: In the years leading up to your debacle there wasnt any homocides at the taste, the murder rate was lower as was the crime rate. You came in fucked everything up got ripped a new asshole and you were forced to listen to people that were actually police officers and I use that term loosely. Now things are getting a little bit back to normal. But to give yourself the grade of a "B" just proves what a moron you are. You are not responsible for it. When these "honor students" got back to the west side on the Green Line, the trains were out of control. Fights on the trains and then on the platforms when getting off. One Suburban kid thought it would be a good idea to get on a train with these animals and got robbed and his butt kicked pretty good.

Go to CLEAR system, mobile video, there are four different live feeds of the taste. It shows all the gangs walking around signing and fighting. Unfortunately the media will never reveal this to the masses it hasn't permission from Da MARE.

Avoid the crowds unless you're being paid to go down there and control 'em; stay home, take a tranky-lizer, and listen to the chaos on Z1, the Citywide alternates for the event, CFD ambulance dispatch...you'd never go near the thing if you could help it. People up the alley got a better fireworks show anyway, and they won't start it before dark and then push everyone back home like a bunch of children by 9:30.
Seems like the crowd hardly even got there before they were shoving it back West onto the Madison Street buses...this is "multiculturalism," everything reduced to the lowest common denominator.
Grownups can sit and talk quietly with a beer 'til midnight -- and they'll put the empty can in the trash, too. Not this bunch.

K-rails and squadrol slowed the flow across Jackson but bottlenecked the emergency services trying to get out to the ambulances.

there were a lot of exempts in the middle of the shit, maybe it will remind them about what the average copper goes thru everyday. Weis actually seemed to be enjoying himself, Brust looked like a deer caught in the headlights, but maybe he was focusing on the crowds and scanning for weapons.
All in all it sucked as always, but some coppers acted like the police early and sent a message that appeared to help out later. Until the city takes the cue from places like naperville rib fest and milwaukee fest, things will never get back to the way it used to be.

I worked many "Tastes" and Chicago Fests as a tact guy. Now retired, I would not go to the taste for any reason. We had it rough some nights, but not like it is now. The media lies and covers up the truth. Go to the lakefront festivals in Milwaukee and find out how well run and how much fun a festival can be. A fence around the event and they charge admission. Keeps the animals out ( or most of them).Good luck during the rest of the event, stay close to your partner and the radio.
A $10-20 admission fee is the answer!!!

Hey media people.....Let me tell you something....The TRUTH about the Taste of Chicago from a SUPERVISOR who worked there for four days thuis far and one more tomorrow.....I can tell you with `100% accuracy that so far there have been 14 guns confiscated at the taste of Chicago....3 that I PERSONALLY know of last night (03 July) and 9 the day before!!! YES.....9!!! I worked the opening weekend and there were two in the first 2 days...along with a group of lets say.....misunderstood kids who stole 2 valet cars....just simply took off with them!!! 03 July was a JOKE....10-1's all over the place....fights everywhere....You media types really should have scanners tuned into the taste frequencies....you would hear for yourselves...14 guns in the taste this year!!! That is TRUE reporting and NO COVER UP....NO SUGAR COATING....From a supervisor who knows.....I would NEVER take my family to this horrid event....ever in a million years!!! The city MUST start charging at least $5 per head to get in to hopefully keep some of the animals out.....hopefully!!!
I was there. There were no 10-1's, no thugs, no fights, and no police prescence needed. Oh yea, I was at summerfest last night. I took my money to Milwaukee and saw a great concert, ate good food and met nice people. I have been going up there a couple times a year for the last 15 years. I'm going back Sunday. Great place to take a date. Save your money flee the city and see how a another city can throw a major party day after day with no problems.

I read in an earlier comment that Roti was one of the guys in charge at the taste. Why is it that here is a guy that will use to help run the police at events and then let him just work for some other unit during the week? Here is a guy the has earned the respect of everyone that has ever worked with or for him. Why doesn't Jody see this in this guy and let him be the #2 guy behind him or let him be in charge of the real police. Nick is one of the most repected men on this job of all the bosses as far as I am concerned. A boss who will have your back. A boss that is very well organized and knows what he is doing. If he was in charge I would even sign up to go work the taste on the 3rd, just to help him out. There is a guy that if he was in charge of the CPD I might even produce some extra work for this city.
I must say this years taste again demonstrated why no matter how much they kick us in the balls I still love this department. There were coppurs everywhere and when units called for help you saw nothing but blue and black running in large numbers.
I too am not a fan of Weis but that guy stood toe to toe with teh units at Jackson and State/Wabash. HE was there everytime a group started shit running side by side with the P.O.s putting hands on. I am an old timer with teh Chevrons (out of Score) and I have yet to EVER BEEN AT THE TASTE AND SEE GOLD STARS GOING TOE TO TOE. Despite some of the things that I really don't care for and the policies instuted by Weis he does deserve a bit a of credit. Again I will repeat he does deserve a thanks for that in my mind. McCotter and Odonnel agai two fo the best. Couldn't thank the P.O's enough.

I love how the department downplays the fact that at least 5 people brought loaded handguns to the taste. but hey it was a great sucess because no one was shot. Gee Jody thats a great way to think. How many families were terrorized by roving groups of fighting gangbangers. Not to mention the numerous shots fired incidents that occurred. but since you denied them I guess they didnt happen right. Thought I was dreaming. Thousands of people gathered together anticipating a free fireworks show by throwing bags, enjoying a cold one, talking w/friends neighbors & relatives. Here is a guy the has earned the respect of everyone that has ever worked with or for him. The city DID NOT cancel the South Side Irish Parade. The parade prganizerswhich is a group of people from the community decided to cancel the parade. These people helped organize the parade for years on their own time and are just tired of how bad it got. They didn't have time to enjoy the party and the parade was in the area that they live in, so they would have to clean up the mess from all the drunksRemeber the parade is run by a bunch of people on city time that does not live in the area or have to clean up afterwards.

Offender was seen flashing gang signs by a Lieutenant who then called it out to responding units after seeing the shotgun's grip sticking out of a backpack. The offender ran through a crowded Grant park where many families and their kids were present,then ran across Lake Shore Dr. with the shotgun in his hands. Offender was apprehended at the water's edge at the lake front, shotgun recovered, no one hurt....all in a days work, thats how we do it on the CPD!!

The Roots of Crime
What are the roots of crime? What can be done to lower the crime rate in the United States? Let's look at Cook County Illinois. The City of Chicago is within Cook County. In 1999 there were over 700 murders in Chicago. Daley claims that 460 of the murders were committed with guns. I do not have the numbers at this time, but it is a known fact locally, that it is much safer to live in the suburbs of Cook County than it is to live in Chicago. Chicago's murder rate stands out like a sore thumb. In many suburbs around Chicago, it is rare to have a homicide. So what is different about the suburbs vs. the City of Chicago?
The most obvious answer is the poverty that engulfs Chicago. In Chicago, there are whole neighborhoods of people that live in third world like conditions. These neighborhoods are as large, if not larger than many of the small towns that make up the rest of Cook County. These parts of Chicago are riddled with joblessness, homelessness, hopelessness, drugs, gangs, poverty, and multi-generational welfare families. If you put a red pin in the map of the City of Chicago designating the location for every murder that is committed there, you would notice a pattern. The red pins would be concentrated in the poorest of neighborhoods and the housing projects.
This proves the link between violent crime and poverty. Almost all violent crime is committed in the poorest of neighborhoods. Take a close look at the people who populate the State Prisons of the United States and you will see people who were raised under the worst conditions from the poorest neighborhoods. So one does not need to be a rocket scientist to figure a solution to lowering the crime rates in our major cities.
Just about any cop in Chicago can tell you that there are too few cops chasing too many gang member and crooks. Obviously, Chicago needs to hire more police officers that work special tactical units that deal with gangs. Cook County needs to hire more prosecutors that go after violent offenders. More pressure needs to be put on gangs to reduce the crime rate. But most of all, poverty issues need to be addressed. As long as there is poverty, hopelessness, and all the problems that poverty creates, Chicago, as well as other major cities, will not see a significant reduction of crime. Lawsuits against gun makers are an insult to anyone who understands what needs to be done to lower the crime rate.

Yeah, right -- "You're OK, aren't you? I mean, you look like you're OK...I mean, you did get most of your stuff back..." That never happens. Neither will a burglary ever get talked down to "theft from building" -- like the victim was a stupid asshole who left his valuables laying around out in the hallway. Neither will officers shoo a victim away and refuse to take reports when the assault was committed by a policeman's kid and his shitass pals.

Jody is clearly a joke as are the gold stars. At the end of the day, CPD apparently quelled multiple (and expected) disturbances without fucking up the Lympics bid, no thanks to the lack of street smarts of top brass.
Unfortunately, the usual animals have fucked it up for everybody repeatedly in recent years, so admission and dress code should be enforced in future years, as much as I hate to say it.
