Interesting Rumor

We have no idea how to track this one down, but it would explain a lot about Shortshank's attitude:
  • The sad thing is is that the Mayor is slowly but surely downsizing our department. Now, with drops in stats, this justifies him not hiring any more police or moving forward to do anything for us. This is the most important thing; the Mayor is not worried about us because he spent well over $1 million dollars for a firm to verify how many registered voters were from CPD. They also looked for the historical voting numbers. Guess what, less than 1 out of every 4 police officers of any rank are registered voters. Less than that voted in the last two Mayoral elections. This is fact! So why would he really care what you think?
We had never heard this one before, and we hear a lot of rumors because of where we're at. We asked around yesterday and we were unpleasantly surprised to discover this person might be onto something - 4 of the 7 cops we asked weren't even registered to vote. Have our readers discovered one of the root causes of why Shortshanks treats us with such disregard?

downsize the department-- ok--- when the lawyer gets stuck up and he has to wait for three hours for the paper car to show up he may be a little pissed--- the offender is long gone and the 6000 dollars a year he is paying in property taxes is a bad investment--- just like the federal government requires a warning on a pack of smokes that smoking is hazardous to your health and may cause cancer the city should hand out notices that living in chicago may be hazardous to your health and may result in your premature death.....

Unfortunately, SCC, while I agree that Daley must be out of office, the political thing as a whole has become such a disgrace. No longer does the (2) party system work. These people are not on our sides. They were meant to work together for bettering the common man. Instead, they fight like 5th graders.

A lot of Americans are disheartened. Shortshanks is just a small part of the problem.

I'm stunned ANY of us feels we can afford to sit on the sidelines and NOT register to vote.

And I am sickened to think this mayor, who bitches that every nickel counts, would spend appalling amounts of money on a study of this nature.

But, then again, if we're so insignificant (right, SCC?) why does he feel the need to squander the obscene amount of a million dollars to find out if we're registered and what affiliation we claimed?

As the "Pig"-guy poster stated in another thread, we have no one but ourselves to blame for our shitty treatment, work conditions, vehicles, equipment etcetera.

Likewise, if the percentage of coppers not even registered to vote is true, than shame on those coppers. By not voting, you are tacitly allowing your ass-raping by Daley and the City of Chicago to continue.

Like many, I hope for stellar decisions/awards once the contract is settled; but being a pessimistic realist I also anticipate, with great eagerness, the long faces, the mother-fuckering and the endless variations/declarations of "fuck it! I'm done working!" should Arbitrator Benn award less than what "is fair".

It's then that us guys and gals with time on the job will again try to school the hairgel generation about the non-reciprocal nature of the mayor, city, job and citizenry when it comes to fair compensation and equal treatment. Us old timers will again reiterate how the aforementioned pimps don't give a damn about the CPD, and in particular the dwindling number of patrolmen.

Unfortunately, advice from those that have "been there, done that" won't be absorbed by enough of us to make a difference in the grand scheme of things.

This topic was covered at length at the January FOP meeting. There was a deep concern and, to be quite honest, a great deal of shame in exposing the fact that so little number of officers actually step up to the plate and vote. Lord knows they love to come to places like this to bitch and moan in droves, but they won't take the time to head to the polls twice a year.
I hope this posting wakes the masses. We have a dynamite opportunity to make a difference in this town. Let's get to it. The FOP said they would have dates in the near future to have voter registration at the hall, contact them to find out when.

Don't say I told you so.

Once again, we are our own worst enemy.

We'll sit there and whine & cry, but when it comes to actually DOING SOMETHING (like go to an FOP meeting, go vote, picket at city hall, vote in the FOP election), it's "Huh?" or "Who, me?", just like the geniuses on my last street stop.

We've ALL got important things going on in our lives; family, personal activities, etc., but you can't just sit there, in a squad car, at roll call or behind a computer screen bitching and expecting someone else to carry the weight for you.

You have to decide what's important in the long run and you might have to make short-term sacrifices in order to achieve those things.

Daley is an asshole, no doubt about it, but one thing he (or his handlers) understand is the election process, particularly the crooked one in Cook County. Hell, years ago it was rumored that he keeps tabs on how many vote in the FOP election. I'll be that's a pretty good guide as to how many bother to vote in local or perhaps even national elections.

There's still time to register for Daley's next election, and he will run; he's got to make enough crooked deals to cover for his Olympic failure.

What would he think if suddenly a boat-load of cops simply registered to vote? How about if we all actually voted?

And to the guy with the short attention span from another thread: Sorry this posting is so long.

If you don't vote, you don't count. Period. You work for the City. You are part and parcel of a political empire. As distasteful as it might be to you, you'll never have any muscle unless you participate. The "interesting rumor", if true, demonstrates that quite clearly.

A very simple but very effective tactic to get their peoples votes! These people voted with their stomachs and NOT politics!

Daley does the same thing by pandering to these fools and thus they get what they want and in turn Daley gets their votes! This kind of garbage is what we are up against and must be broken by voting against Mayor Daley at all times!

Years ago, when Jane Byrne was seizing power from the machines' Michael Bilandic, she did so with the endorsement and assist of the Chicago police officers because she promised to allow us to unionize. We, as a profession, were very organized and political in those days, because of how Mayor Daley Sr. just f*cked us around, year after year, on wages and benefits.

Our problem was, Old Man Daley two faced and backstabbed us all back then. He used the old divide and conquer strategy to keep us weak.

Before we could unionize, we had several police "social clubs" that existed. There was the Chicago Patrolman's Association (CPA), the Confederation of Police (COP), FOP and the Combined Counties Police Association (CCPA), all of whom were politically active and claimed to have large numbers of Chicago cops in their membership. That served Daley well. Each year, he would meet with the head of each organization and discuss wage and benefit issues with them. At the end of the meetings, he would put his arm around their shoulder and say I like you and your group and those OTHER groups suck and I think you and I can really do a good job for your members. But make sure you go back and tell your people to vote for me so I can get you all the things we talked about.

So, each guy would go back to his group and tell them that the Mayor liked THEM the best and if they all voted for the Mayor's favorite candidates, they would be taken care of. Problem was he lied!

Back then, it was estimated that each PO was able to control as many as a hundred votes between their friends and family and their family's friends. That political power was feared and Daley felt if we were ever able to unionize, we would become WAY TOO powerful and uncontrollable for him, which is why he never let it happen.

When we did unionize under Byrne, WE DID become a power to be courted and schmoozed. Unfortunately, it sounds like it has created a complacency that has removed our balls as individual voters.

Never underestimate the power of corrupt politicians!

Shame on you SCC, I wrote a scathing post to one of your threads slamming the CPD for our voting habits. This is your blog and you didn't put my post up.

My post was dead on. The CPD when it votes goes hand in hand with the democratic party. The CPD are sheep just like the rest of the brain dead in this city and county. The CPD talk big but its just talk.

The fact of the matter is that most of the CPD aren't even registered to vote. The CPD and their family aren't registered because of jury duty (a quick change to Dls and state IDs would be a nice wake up call). That is the lameness of the CPD. I don't want my spouse on a jury so I don't register to vote.

I work on a team of 10 people plus a Sgt. I along with one other person on my team voted in the February primary. That is PATHETIC!!!!!!!!!!!!

When the contract is settled and we get 0% for the three years we have been without a contract I will laugh. That is what we get when we don't VOTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chicago Police officers have always been divided when it comes to work issues. The FOP was a social organization based in Area 4 Homicide when I was there. John Dineen worked there and ended up as president. No one thought the FOP would win the election or subsequent run-off during the Byrne years. Even they were surprised. It is funny how all of the former FOP presidents and some of the officers end up with very good jobs in govt. or the private sector when they leave the FOP.Very strange. Maybe it is their talents? A united police and fire voting block would turn heads in this city, as it does in NY.The low FOP voting turn out speaks volumes and I am sure city hall hears it loud and clear. You can bitch all you want in this blog or at roll call, but if you do not turn out and protest or to vote, city hall could care less what you say or think.

I knew Jack Hawkinson who was head of the Confederation of Police. A good man who just couldn't get past the Mayor's BS. Same with Joe Pecoraro at CPA and John Flood with Combined Counties. Daley had these groups polarized against each other, which is why FOP won the election when we finally unionized.

The coppers weren't sure they trusted the Teamsters due to their corrupt and, some say, criminal history. Plus, they never cared about the police for one second until it looked like they could make money off us by unionizing us.

Combined Counties didn't stand a chance because they didn't represent Chicago coppers exclusively.

The COP wanted an AFL-CIO union affiliation but due to time constraints and existing rules, could only muster an association with the local Paper Hangers union before the union certification vote.

When the election was over, the least radical, most conservative and most fraternal of the organizations was the winning representative of our profession here in Chicago... The FOP.

Though nothing much has changed over the years regarding the toughness of the FOP, they have been instrumental in ushering in HUGE changes for police officers that dinosaurs like me would never have imagined 30 to 40 years ago!

For those in Beverly/Morgan, one of the locations is the 22nd district.

Sad, but true. The truely unfortunate thing is that we make it so easy for the city to divide us.

they can break down every block by age, sex, nationality.

IF THEY HAVE A LIST OF NAMES AND ADDRESSES THEY CAN EASILY UPLOAD THE INFORMATION AND SEE IF OFFICERS VOTE.

THE INFORMATION GOES ABOUT 12 YEARS BACK AND HAS EVERY ELECTION YOU HAVE VOTED ON. IT DOESNT SAY WHO U VOTED 4. BUT IT DOES SHOW IF U R A REPUBLICAN.

I'm curios if anyone else who registered as a Republican is having the same issues.

You mean the blanket post that called all cops lazy, do-nothing crybabies? We delete those as soon as we get to the part about, "All you people who post here are..."

Try it without all the blanket condemnations and we'll bet it gets published. Just look at all the stuff above this post that calls out cops for not voting.

What a grand idea! Use this post to start a police and fire voter registration!! Flyers at every station house and unit! Then a petition to reduce the number of alderman! Wow!! That would be power!! That could get something done. Daley is going to run for reelection next year and if we are not united he might just win. A voter drive with city employees might just encourage a good candidate to run against daley. If you watched channel 5 news today, they mentioned that Rahm stated if Daley does not run, he will.

So you have to handle 10 jobs instead of 8, or 12 instead of 10, or whatever. Do you really think that it matters to Daley's budget office?

Crime is down. Why have so many cops? And sorry, we didn't do it. The demographics have changed (the population has gotten older, no more concentration of public housing residents), here and most other urban areas. THat's Daley's excuse. And it may even be a good one.

I say the target is 11,500 budgeted strength. And then fill about 11,000.

HEAR HEAR!!!

Our retired subject matter experts, The Savoy Slant Six Police have been harping on this sore subject! FOR YEARS 42 extra short has been telling CPD to kiss his ass because coppers DO NOT VOTE!

C'mon guys!! Why the fuck do you think j-fart & his feeb butt buddies are here?

Because shorty has no healthy respect or fear of the Police as a political force!

Each copper can very easily reach out and touch 20 to 25 people... Al we need to do is be able to sway half that number and we'll be able to run shorty, j-fart, masters & co. out of town on a rail!

There IS NO GOOD REASON for us to endure this season of fuckery we're having to put up with now.

There IS NO GOOD REASON we have to put up with being shit-talked because we want & NEED good pay, good medical and a good pension for TAKING YEARS OFF OUR LIVES DOING THIS JOB!

It burns us the fuck up when we see/hear the constant parade of Daley Inc. propaganda bullshit being eaten up and regurgitated by most people. When times are tough EVERYBODY has something to say about how we're compensated. When times are good you couldn't get these same people to sign up to be the Police if you chained them to a chair and pushed them into the fire place.

Actually, NOBODY has a healthy respect/fear of the Police anymore which has set the table for us to be openly, brazenly and VIVIDLY shit-talked and disrespected let alone physically attacked!

There was a time when people were deathly afraid to do shit to the Police that is so commonplace now.

We do swear, aver and attest that the average citizen would NOT PUT UP with the fuckery we endure from shorty, j-fart, masters & burst if this shit was going on in the private sector. These fools would have been jailed and sued into abject poverty a long time ago in the real world!

The public justifiably have been pointing & laughing their asses off because it just sucks to be the Police.

VOTE DAMN IT! REGISTER TO VOTE DAMN IT! MAKE YOUR FRIENDS & FAMILY MEMBER VOTE!

Stop looking for this unknown fucking "Conservative Savior" to ride to CPD's rescue!

VOTE! Bend these rotten muthafuckahs to OUR WILL and perhaps we can turn this shit around! Then we and the tax paying hostages in this city won't have to be aggravated with Daley Inc., the liberal ass-whore media, the running-dog rev'runs, alder-fools and others.

We can be a political force to be reckoned with. Our survival is at stake!

SCC, thanks for posting part of my comment. As you can see from the IP address, it is indeed me.

I just would like to add that the city is looking to dissolve our pensions, the Police and the Fire Department. They have a number of options on the table, but none benefit us. This is very real and very very serious. I took this job at a very young age just to ensure I did receive a pension, in hopes I could leave at 50 and enjoy my passion which is not profitable, but very enjoyable. Additionally, they have the right now to not provide health insurance for us after 2013 that includes for retirees. Our Aldermen voted this in a few years back. I wish we had you guys when they were doing this. I emailed everyone I could to let them know what was happening and to contact their legislative leaders. What do you think they will now when 2013 rolls in?

Lastly, now many companies have followed suit (with the exception of the State at this point) to instituting mandatory furlough days on its employees. By us accepting this via the Exempts, even though it does not affect me as a Patrol officer, it has now opened the door for this to be made an option for the city to once again balance their budget on the backs of their employees!!! The State is now attempting to do this with the threat of laying off State Police Officers. Watch and see....This WILL trickle down to us. And we continue to watch the Mayor allow our Superintendent to make in one year what six police officers would make in that same year. He in turn brought in 4 Federal Agents who are new "line" items in the budget (for those that follow our budget, they know what I mean). The Superintendent is also attempting to have his contract extended and place him and his buddies’ salaries on our backs once again.

The three years we have been without a contract which means no raise, has afforded the city a great opportunity to make plenty of money off of the money that was not used to rightfully pay us. The money we spent over those three years on interest from our cars, homes and credit cards, has cost us all dearly.

My fellow brothers and sisters in blue, please pay attention to what is going on right under our noses because this IS directly AFFECTING YOU and YOUR FUTURE! They are literally trying to take our right to have the pension that was promised to us when we took this job. They will turn it into a 401K type of retirement fund with little to no contribution from the city. Remember, we DO NOT pay into Social Security, so our pension is all we have!!! We will find ourselves not financially sound at all as we approach our senior years. This is fact! Wake up!!!

downsize the department-- ok--- when the lawyer gets stuck up and he has to wait for three hours for the paper car to show up he may be a little pissed--- the offender is long gone and the 6000 dollars a year he is paying in property taxes is a bad investment--- just like the federal government requires a warning on a pack of smokes that smoking is hazardous to your health and may cause cancer the city should hand out notices that living in chicago may be hazardous to your health and may result in your premature death.....

3/08/2010 12:53:00 AM

This is already being done and as you can see, calls for service is down citywide and so is violent crime which drives the perception of crime. At this rate, the Mayor has NO reason to increase our numbers. We are making due with no Captains for Watch Commanders and we are running the Lieutenants all over the city. The troops are getting no REAL direction because every day, they have a different Watch Commander that may run the watch much differently than the supposed assigned leader. In turn, you get a number of people who are not familiar with the Acting Watch Commander, you have officers that the Acting Watch Commander are not familiar with, you imput NOTHING to assist with that particular district's goals because you just can't be aware of them, you end up with police that do the bare minimum if anything because guess what, they know you don't know them and they don't know you, so no commitment there! Lastly, the Sergeants have no direction or assistance, so whatever is good for the night, is just that, good for the night. :-(

This city and department has just BEEN LUCKY!! Thats it! LUCKY!!!

if we presume that 99 out of 100 incumbents are the 'cancer(s)' you refer to, then, to rid ourselves of the 'cancer(s)' that we know are 'cancer(s)', the incumbents, you can choose to cast your vote in the following manner:

A 3 Step formula for ousting incumbents:

Step 1: Identify who the Incumbents are.

Step 2: Locate the Incumbent's name on the ballot.

Step 3: If the Incumbent's name is listed FIRST, (at the top of the list of candidates), cast your vote for whichever name is listed LAST.

OR

If the Incumbent's name is NOT listed first, (anywhere but the top of the list of candidates), cast your vote for whichever name IS listed first.

Applying the above formula will ensure that you have not cast your votes for any Incumbents and that all voters, who have also applied this formula, will have cast their votes for the SAME non-incumbent candidate.

Until such time as there are honest, non-cancerous candidates managing to get on the ballot, the least malignant cancerous candidates will be a better choice than the most malignant Incumbents.

And, unless you find enduring the most malignant cancerous Incumbents to your liking, you'll embrace the concept of voting out said malignancies, rather than continuing to bitch about not being 'given' someone worthy enough to get you to get off your pompous ass and vote.

That is, of course, if you're not one of the malignant cells polluting the body politic.

That is because they are too stupid to figure out pay for a partial pay period. That is why the office people tell you finance likes you to retire on the 1st or 15th. That makes it easier for moron office people to figure out how much they owe you. retire on the 5th or 22nd and they get all confused, it fucks up their pea brains.

I will retire on october 3rd for personnel reasons, not the 1st or 15th but the 3rd of October. I will go in on 3 october and put in the papers so they can't do anything but accept the retirement.

Why make anything easy, for years this screwed up department has made every goddamned thing difficult for me. Remember anyone asking why some dumb move was done a certain way and being told "because that's the way we've always done it?"

That was the standard answer for years. Well, I will retire on 3 October, fuck 'em.

Even if you just fuck up the status quo that they so neatly and corruptly organized, you are a threat to them. Why do you think they have secret meetings to plan "re-districting." Rant Part II:

And another damn thing...

Hasn't anyone been paying attention to the recent "voter registration drives" occurring in garden spots of the city utterly and completely beshat with resolute non-contributors?

They're registered voters at the direction of the running-dog rev'runs. They have NO SKIN OR SIZEABLE MONIES AT RISK HERE BUT THEY DICTATE THE FUCKIN' AGENDA BECAUSE THEY VOTE!

Think about that shit! The world has turned upside down when people who don't have shit invested have the most say in how things go.

It's maddening seeing them getting their asses kissed with free this and free that courtesy of Daley Inc.

The entire middle class in this city should be up in arms!

Why do you think shorty is now giving a big "fuck you" to coppers, firemen, transit workers, tradesmen & union members?

Why is he using the sour economy as a pretext to renege on labor agreements and divorce the city from it's obligation to provide health care and a decent pension for current and retired employees?

BECAUSE THE MIDDLE CLASS DOES NOT VOTE!

What the fuck has happened to the middle class voters over the last 30 years?

Does anyone remember the parents and grand parents who came from nowhere, worked themselves nearly to death to have a little something to call their own?

THE OLD FOLKS VOTED & MADE THEMSELVES HEARD!

During election times when we were young, EVERYBODY OF VOTING AGE had to show their ballot stubs at the end of the day. If you didn't vote you were considered a traitor to all they worked for!

Shorty and the alderfools should be falling over themselves kissing OUR ASSES!

SHIT!

Is their propaganda and control of the media that damn good that upright people can't discern for themselves that something is far beyond fucked up in Chicago?

It looks like a combination of Animal Farm, 1984, Fahrenheit 454 & American in The Gulag will have it's epicenter here...

WAKE UP!

We are in mortal danger of losing all that we and our parents worked so hard for!

"I take the time to learn about the candidates and vote.
Using this so called 3 Step Program to vote is just more of the same. Instead of Tweedle Dee, we get Tweedle Dum. It's time for recalls, term limits and new political parties. At the very least, "every" office should *NOT* be Democratic controlled.

If you take the time to register to vote, you are in the minority of all qualified-to-vote citizens.

If you, having taken the time to register to vote, also take the time to actually vote, you are in the minority of all registered voters.

If you actually "..take the time to learn about the candidates...", even presuming that your definition of learning about the candidates equals actually knowing, with some reasonable degree of certainty, who they are, what they believe in and what they will do, once elected, you are in a very small minority of all registered voters who actually vote.

Before anything can be changed, ie., term limits, recall legislation, independent candidates, and 'new' political parties, etc., the tightly woven webs of professional politicians, of both major parties, must be severed.

The only means of doing so are in the hearts and minds of those citizens who:

1) are qualified to vote

2) are registered to vote

3) take the time to vote

4) in each individual contest, cast their votes for a single, non-Incumbent candidate

There are only 2 ways that, in a given contested office, enough votes will be cast for a single, non-Incumbent candidate.

1. The single, non-Incumbent candidate inspires enough voters to vote FOR him, or her.

2. The Incumbent running for reelection inspires enough voters to both NOT vote for him/her AND all voters, who are thus inspired, vote for the same, single, non-Incumbent candidate.

Which is more likely, that the vast majority of citizens who have taken the time to register to vote, and who do vote, will have a non-Incumbent candidate who inspires them to vote FOR him/her, or, wanting to vote AGAINST an Incumbent candidate whom they detest, all vote for a single non-Incumbent candidate?

Without a non-Incumbent candidate who inspires enough voters to vote FOR him/her, what other means can voters, who want to vote out an undesirable Incumbent, use, to ensure that enough votes are cast for a single, non-Incumbent candidate?

The "...so called 3 Step Program to vote..." is the only means to overcome the problem of 'splitting the vote', (which is used so effectively by those in power to stay in power), which doesn't depend upon there being a strongly popular, and, presumably, qualified non-Incumbent candidate.

The 'wave' is either one of a desirable, and popular, non-Incumbent candidate to vote for, or, an undesirable Incumbent + a unified voting strategy to vote out that undesirable Incumbent, as in 'anyone BUT the asshole Incumbent'.

To avoid it being 'everyone BUT the asshole Incumbent', (which results in the asshole Incumbent being reelected, no matter how few voters actually cast their votes), applying the "...so called 3 Step Program to vote..." will achieve the desired result, ie., an ousted asshole Incumbent.

It's just mathematics, as simple as it gets.

This poster is right on! Everyone, get up and register to vote, get your parents, kids, neighbors, girlfriends and friends to not only register, but to actually vote.

As shown in the previous elections, the 3 Steps fail. It's time to stop "doing the same ole thing", which isn't accomplishing anything, except new & more taxes and more governmental failures.

Like the other person said, it's time for term limits, recalls and new independent, people power political parties.

For it to work, all it takes is for people to apply it.

The people who've registered to vote must take the time to vote and vote according to the formula.

When more voters vote according to the formula, then voters who vote for the Incumbent, the Incumbent will lose and the lucky non-Incumbent candidate, whose name was either listed last or first will win.

"It's time to stop 'doing the same ole thing', which isn't accomplishing anything, except new & more taxes and more governmental failures."

By 'the same ole thing' you are referring to the Incumbents regularly being reelected, because:

a) people who meet the qualifications to register to vote are not registered

b) people who are registered to vote do not bother to vote

c) people who are registered and do bother to vote do not all vote for a single, non-Incumbent candidate

d) people who are registered and do vote, vote for the Incumbent assholes

"Like the other person said, it's time for term limits, recalls and new independent, people power political parties."

And you seriously believe that any of the Incumbent politicians are going to cooperate in imposing 'term limits' and 'recall' statutes upon themselves? Or encourage the formation of 'new, independent, people power political parties'?

Wat yu talkin' 'bout, willis?
