Suburban Firefighter Killed
Brian Carey, 28, a firefighter with the Homewood Fire Department for less than two months, had dreamed of being a fireman since he was a boy. On Tuesday, he was the first in a line of firefighters to rush into a burning house to save a paralyzed, elderly man, family said -- the first time that he had confronted a fire "of that magnitude."
"He was your typical redheaded South Side Irish-Catholic kid who wanted to be a fireman. Everyone was so proud of him when he became one," said Jim Duffy, a close family friend and retired battalion chief from Oak Park who used to bring Carey as a boy to the firehouse to let him slide down the fire pole and try on helmets.

His actions merit a formal proclamation by the State's highest office for a day in his honor.
I would like to see the entire city of Homewood and it's neighboring villages pay him the homage he deserves.

God Speed brother. May you rest in peace and may God rest your soul. You were taken from us too early and much too young but know that you will not be forgotten for the ultimate unselfish sacrifice you made.......... Our Deepest sympathies to your immediate family and colleagues of the Homewood Fire Dept.
and finally may your brother[s] who were injured have a speedy full recovery.......
it's always hard to deal with when a guy goes down but what makes it worse is this fireman was only 28--- our deepest thoughts and sympathies to his surviving family and friends, a true hero died doing what he was born to do.....
I don't have the words.
He died too young.
I hope the knowledge that many are praying for them brings comfort to his family.
RIP brother
I never understood the unfriendly rivalry between the Police and Fire Depts
Theyve always helped me including bagging a body that leapt 43 floors onto a concrete garage deck and another that got wedged and masticated between the CTA tracks and an El Train car.
Plus Ive eaten at their tables and watched their television sets when the circumstances called for it
This was all a long time ago but I still remember
St. Florian and St. Michael the Arch Angel, escort Firefighter Carey into the gates of Heaven. Watch over and guide us all in our daily duties.
Amen
all gave some, some gave all RIP firefighter.
My heart goes out to the family of this firefighter, he died doing the job he loved.

RIP Brian Carey. A fellow Brother Rice alum.
Boo was a great young man who always had a huge smile on his face. He was taken from us way to soon. My thoughts and prayers are with the Carey family and I know all Chicago-land first responders (both fire and police) have an angel watching over us. Godspeed Boo.
RIP Brother Responder. You were good.
R.I.P. My fellow Br. Rice Crusader, I believe he was in the same class as Valadez. Very rough three years or so for Br Rice family...
The Br. Rice Family lost another young man in the line of duty. You will not be forgotten "Boo." Prayers go out to you and your family.
Hopefully at the Police/Fire football game at Br. Rice in a couple weeks they will honor Carey along with PO Valadez.
RIP brother. You are a true hero to all of us.
May God watch over your family during these very difficult times.
Brian, I may have passed u in the Halls at rice, or at a bar on western. I didn't know you, but I will be paying my respects to a fellow Crusader/South side Irishman and your grieving family Monday and Tuesday. Godspeed firefighter. may god bless you and you family in their time of need.
