Drop Gun Pickup Tomorrow

Monday morning at ERPS, you can resupply your trunk with drop guns, replicas and BB guns just in time for the summer rush. Where do they all come from?
  • Of the 4,050 firearms traded in for gift cards, there were 55 assault weapons and 3,335 handguns, along with 660 replicas, according to the Office of Police News Affairs.

During the first half hour of the gun buyback program this morning, more than a thousand weapons were turned in, officials said. The department offered up to $100 for weapons handed over.

In announcing the early results and encouraging others to take part in the day-long event, Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis announced that 1,335 guns were turned in during the first half hour, including what looked like two hand grenades.

"What are we doing with hand grenades in Chicago?" Weis asked, incredulous.

These were inert, as your own Bomb and Arson people mentioned an hour later. But in case you were unaware, grenades have been used in Chicago gang wars for over a century now. In fact, within the last decade or so, gang bangers have been know to refill the inert practice grenades and arm them for use in drive-by bombings. Unfortunately, none of them were ordinance experts and they failed to put in the time delayed fuses. We've run across at least two of these brainiacs and their missing hands. Always a fun time.

In any event, we certainly encourage everyone who turned in a gun to take their gift card and start looking for a decent home defense weapon. June is just around the corner along with a Supreme Court decision that should allow you to keep guns in the city.

In the mid 70's a boxcar was broken into in Chiraq and grenades and rifles were taken. If my retired mind remembers correctly they were never found.

They are still out there somewhere.

Made a street stop tonight and the guy thanked us. He was in his mid-30s and said he turned in a broken gun that he's had since he was 16. He said he used the gift card to buy his mom something really nice for Mother's Day.

Since the beginning, politicos have loved to make a grand show of bullshit like this. Inert, replica training grenades being sold to the media as the real deal, hilariously elastic definitions about what constitutes an 'assault weapon' so they can pad their statistics- "XXX assault weapons taken off the street..."

Yeah, I'm sure the thugs were quick to hand in $1200 Bushmasters and $700 AK's for their $100 gift card.

In the end, it's all horseshit as usual. Some poor collector in Indiana gets his gun collection ripped off and the low end turns up at the "gun buyback" in Chicago. Lots of crap from the 1930's that sold for $12.99 brand new, plenty of "dead grandfathers" shotguns and deer rifles being turned in by confused widows- and the practical, real world impact on the bad guys of schemes like this?
ZERO.
Z E FUCKING R O.

Letting idealists 'feel good' about themselves by indulging ineffectual bullshit like this gets old after a while...

look who was turning them in. Widows and other decent law abiding citizens. I just loved the mayor when he said," Having a gun in the home is dangerous. Someone comes home drunk starts an arguement then shoots that person,or a kid gets into a fight then takes the gun outside and kills someone." How about the homicidal maniac who breaks into your home and you get your gun from the secure location where your kid could not get it and kill him before he kills you. Yes mr mayor we have them in chitcago along with crackheads, rapists, gang bangers, and a host of others that would do us harm. Now many of us that drank your kool aid are left defenseless. Oh yes they can just call the police, and hurry up and wait on the few of us that are available for assignments. Thats due to your turn in a cop for olympic money and planter money.

Well, some of those "Old Guns" could be worth quite a bit of money given the condition, manufacturer, and type. If a collector grade gun was turned in for $100.00, the owner just screwed themselves for chump change. For example, a pre-1964 Winchester is big money in almost any condition. You really think it's going to be destroyed?

5*$100 + 3335*$75 + 660*$10 = $262,225.00

Yet, only about $46,000 raised so far this year?

If there were really 55 "$100 specials" and 660 replicas,
than all the city could afford to buy would be about 450 handguns.

Someone's math is a bit fuzzy or someone is lying.

I'll bet these "assault weapons" that got turned in are the same bullshit guns that they have been using for photo ops for years.

The US Supreme Court probably will rule against Chicago, but I would not rush out and buy any handguns, if Washington DC is any example. The Washsington DXC city counsel passed so many ordinaces to restrict handgun use within the home that the US Senate now has taken up the issue to overrule the city counsel. I expect Daley to do the same thing. It will become very expensive to register a handgun in the city, you will need regular firearms classes and it will be illegal to carry it within your own home. Just a few of the examples. Watch out,. It is coming!!Many more years of court suits and legal fees on the horizon.

Did anyone else notice that dicks had a sale last week on .22 rifles for $99. Just in time for the turn in, too bad that Chi raq reduced the amount for the turn in, or I would have given them a couple of brand new guns for a nice profit.

Absolutely! and the bottom line is:
you are still defenseless and senseless but you feel safe because a political nitwit told you so.

I'm hanging on to my old .455 Webley revolver.

Go to any military surplus store in the suburbs and you can buy an old inert hand grenade to use as a paperweight for $10.00 or less. Turn it in to Chicago and get a $100.00 gift card..WOW that's a net gain of $90.00. What a waste! Chicago is a fucking joke!

The only thing more laughable is the new statue at St. Sabina memorializing all the children killed by guns and their mothers and unknown sperm donors!

How about spending that money teaching young thugs "impulse control" and "anger management."

sO, um what did this whole party cost, and who paid for it, the tax payers?

News stories said the city raised $46K for the pre-paid cards.

But [numbers as reported by the trib] 55 items @ $100 + 3335 items @ $75 + 660items @ $10 = $262K

Who paid?

Down in Champaign three years ago, we at Guns Save Life collected almost two dozen crap guns - few would actually shoot and I wouldn't have pulled the trigger on but one or two if they would shoot - and they gave us $2200 that we used to buy guns to give away to kids at an NRA Youth shooting camp and the balance went for the ammo 100 kids used at that camp.

Until and unless Dickey comes up with $100 a gun, we won't be back!
