Odd Reporting Styles

  • Chicago taxpayers dodged a fiscal bullet when an independent arbitrator awarded rank-and-file police officers a ten percent pay hike over five years — their smallest raise in nearly three decades.
Then she tosses in this line:
  • But the pricetag is still a whopping $375 million — $160 million of it for retroactive pay.

The city plans to finance the back pay portion by issuing $160 million in so-called commercial paper, a short-term line of credit retired by general city revenues.

  • Chicago Public Schools officials revealed Friday that they plan to borrow up to $800 million to pay their bills -- even as they pledged to give teachers a promised 4 percent pay hike, a move designed to head off a strike.
No "dodged a bullet." No "whopping" borrowing, even though the CPS total is more than double the police numbers.

It's almost like Fran is grinding an axe for the mayor with some slanted reporting while Rossi plays off the enormity of the CPS costs. Hmmmmm.

Why do you hate coppers so much Frannie?

Why don't you answer your emails, even the polite ones?

Even Roeper, Steinberg and Brown answer them,,even if to tell you to buzz off.

Fran---you jealous that we got some type of raise instead of being on a sinking ship like the STMG?

What is the value of your stock these days?

Nothing like letting the truth get in the way of a news story.

Better bang for the buck with the CPD.

CPS is nothing but the biggest day care service in the country.

Most of the teachers don't care, most of the administrators don't care and most of the kids don't care.

Public education is the biggest money pit in the country.

The new teacher union's prez ran on a platform to for go the raises and to preserve jobs and keep class sizes at old levels. The former prez polled teachers and over 60% wanted to preserve jobs.

When you pay attention, it's pretty obvious. I have nothing but respect for teachers, we have some in the family but Chicago students versus Public Safety? When you look at what the CPS churns out despite billions of dollars being pumped into the system versus managing crime and protecting citizens from criminals (most of them from the CPS system), well, I think it's obvious what is a more worthwhile cause.

I do know one thing for certain: We better get to the trough before the Teachers Union does. They won't leave a drop for anyone else.

If they are forced to accept larger class sizes, they will demand another gargantuan pay raise.

Begin preliminary contract negotiations with the City now for the next contract. Lay the groundwork now.

We'll keep getting disrespected as long as the young officer keep writing those parkers, movers, anov, etc I was given a hard time by a 6yr vet on days in 8 who informed me that he had to show a large number of parkers to stay on days even if it meant writing police!!!!nothing matters has long as revenue is generated.

you forgot pat quinn, he wants to borrow 7 billion and raise state income tax 33 percent.... pat quinn definitely inherited a problem he did not make, but do something to fix it instead of making it worse.... you cannot expect to keep spending money like a drunk sailor on shore leave and then go to the taxpayer with your dirty paw stretched out asking for more....

Borrowing (incurring future debt) to pay current expenses is a recipe for disaster.

Sooner or later, the Illinois, California, Chicago, U.S.A. house of (credit) cards is going to fall.

Chicago papers forget what Chicago was. They think that just because the city is mixed with liberals and hoodrats that all the suburbs are too. You're papers are bankrupt because you're overwelmingly liberal!!! People in general are tired of that nonsense, and think the papers are full of shit! -not a police officer

Despite my entirely justified skepticism of local media credibility and bias, I would be remiss if I failed to compliment Sun-Times reporter Fran Spielman. While my lone experience with her may be anecdotal, I must credit her with fairness in reporting my interview with her which appeared on page 2 of the Sun-Times last April 6th. (See Retired cop: Weis 'cut and run" after shooting/Police chief called coward; CPD says complaint is 'absurd')

During my interview, I told Ms. Spielman that there is a widespread perception among Chicago police officers that she is "in Mayor Daley's hip pocket."
She denied it, going as far to say that Daley actually dislikes her.

Let the reader judge. All I can say is that her article on my COWARDICE charge versus J-Fled with the Office of Inspector General Joseph Ferguson was fair and accurate.

However, I can't say the same about her boss, Sun-Times editor Thomas McNamee. This consummate asshole alleged that I had a "vendetta" against Weis and that I am a "guy who's gone off the deep end."

His counterpart at the Tribune, Bruce Dold, was no better. He refused to discuss the COWARDICE charge.

As you recall, J-Fled obviously couldn't care less about the safety of his troops in harm's way. While only 45 seconds away from a murder that just occurred, the despicable COWARD chose to run the other way while the still unidentified shooter fled on foot.

Incidentally, the Office of the Inspector General now refuses to communicate with me--"the Chicago Way"--laying the groundwork for an obvious and shameless cover-up.

We don't have the right to strike because the city ran that law through the Illinois legislature after the firefighter's strike. Public safety was the given excuse.

OK, granted, public safety, but that doesn't then give the City the right to shit on us like they do come contract time. We need the union to fight for an amendment to that law requiring police departments in Illinois in cities of over one million population to be required to bargain in good faith and to pay interest on all back pay to start accruing 90 days after the expiration of the police labor contract.

The same amendment should also require both parties to begin bargaining one year before the expiration of the contract and to require that both sides meet 5 days a week to get the damn thing settled.

Yeah, right, that will happen, and I will win the lottery too.

==================================

T.R.P. you are 100% correct. The CPD & CFD can not strike so the city can leave us to last and give us what is left after the others all get theirs. They also know that our unions are weak because of infighting. Neither of these unions have much particapation and the 5th floor knows it. Plus the CPD has multiple unions which make them even weaker. And with both jobs having MERIT there are way too many SUCKHOLES waiting to get their name on the list and will
f&%k anyone in their way to get there.

The big question is - what did the city do with all the money they saved by not giving raises for the past few years??? I'm guessing they blew it instead of saving it & now they have to borrow the $ to cover back pay...... Stupid way to run a business let alone a major city.....
