Marine Unit Rescue

  • An 18-year-old man was pulled out of the Chicago River today after he lost control of his bicycle and fell into the water near Lake Shore Drive, police said.

The Chicago Police Marine Unit was notified about the incident at about 3:50 p.m. after someone saw the man clinging to a wall near the 200 block of North Lake Shore Drive, police said in a statement.

The man received minor injuries and refused medical attention, police said. The man fell into the water after his bicycle hit a barrier, causing him to lose control and fall into the river. Police also recovered the man's bicycle, officials said.

Thank goodness the bicycle was OK.

Oh, hell; now the mayor will enact yet another law to protect the beloved bicyclists from themselves.

All concrete dividers now must maintain a three-foot distance from bicyclists. Should a bicyclist come too close, the barrier must immediately move to protect said bicyclist.

Great rescue story!

You know... there are some areas along the lakefront bike path, that are pretty treacherous, and I refuse to ride pass them. Instead, I stop my bike and walk through. That might make me sound like a whimp, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Glad the guy is okay!

Off the subject but that post was getting too crowded.

Ok so here is what I learned from this Lieutenants list. If you don't score well, get out of patrol as fast as you can because they never promote anyone out of patrol. This administration looks at patrol as pee on sheep and believe that you do not know anything. Like I say to the domestic battery victim, " first time shame on them, second time shame on you" why are you busting your ass in patrol? Look out for each other but dont break your back for master Daley or his task masters.

The Marine Unit people pretty much do this type of work almost daily and for the most part the unit's people are prepared and ready to go and happy to be there. On the other hand there is a small percentage of people there that hide behind chubby g and run right to him if things aren't done the way that they like; and they get protected by him. They tell him what he wants to hear and he buys it. Instructors setting up training who haven't been in the water in the past year and people that haven't done the job telling you how to do it. I guess just like the whole department force out the guys that know the job and then bring in the g's guy no matter what. Miss you Ric, you helped hold the place together.

We knock the marine unit. I'm a big boater, and there is nothing more dangerous than going on the Great Lakes in Late October through November. These guys do it without regard for their own safety- Just as we put our lives on the line going to calls.

(Not a marine unit guy!)

OT: The Superintendent's Drivers' Merit Promotions to Sergeant

I was able to ask Jody Weis about his two drivers getting merit promotions to sergeant. He gave me the following reasons:

1. They were never given a traffic citation while driving him around. In fact, they were never even stopped for a traffic violation.
2. They never rode around with the left turn signal stuck in the "on" position (I hate when that happens).
3. They never let the gas gauge dip below one-quarter of a tank.
4. They always got the guys at the car wash on 31st St. to put Armor-All on the tires - for free.
4. They alway hung the Supt's. dry cleaning on a hook in the back seat, and they never just threw it on the floor.
5. They ensured that those big old knobby tires on the Supt's. obscenely large SUV were never over-inflated or under-inflated.
6. Roman-Roman-Roman
7. Masters-Masters-Masters

It was then that I realized that, lurking behind the Supt's. "Geico Caveman" appearance, was the mind of a true visionary. These promotions were well deserved, so stop the criticism!

SCC -

As of now, that I know of, this is just a rumor, and has not been confirmed.

However, as we all know, a lot of rumor has first appeared here, on your insignificant blog, and then has turned out to be true. In fact, I bet your insignificance is running better than 70% on police matters.

That being the case, I ask, I beg, I employ you, please, please, please let this rumor be a thread for tonight or tomorrow night.

By bringing this to light, and in a post on SCC, you can stop this travesty before it will even begin. Just like you stopped the SGT who was to be Merit promoted to LT, (forgot the name/initials but the guy who I believe left 21 to go to HQ) you can stop this.

Please, please I beg of you to post/blog/talk about this. Our department has gone from being something we all were proud of (and I am still proud of being CPD, just not sure if the other 8000 are) to something that is an almost daily joke on Late Night, The Tonight Show and The Daily Show.

I should note, I am not against ANY female officer being able to do their job, but being a combat vet from the Panama Invasion, and Desert Storm, there are some things that need to be kept separated. On top of that, I am fully AGINST KB (whom I do not even know — but I know enough to know she is a joke) or any of her elk being on SWAT.

Signed, not a SWAT Operator, just a Proud Blue Shirt, who still gladly humps in Patrol each day and who has never asked SCC to "post this" before.

Thanks.

OT
Chicago and Gator Bradley on CNN this morning. Compared gangs to a "social group that meets regularly like fraternities, Congress or the police dept". Even the anchor laughed at that. I expected the anchor, TJ, to support Gator and his "efforts", but instead he didn't let him off the hook. When asked if criminals make up a street gang, Bradley replied "there's criminals in Congress." After asking several times about the criminal element of street gangs, and if they were responsible for over 60% of the killings, and not getting an answer, the anchor cut him off. Usually don't care for CNN, but this was good.

I bike to work, and have wondered if I could possibly catapult over the handlebars into the North Shore canal. I guess that question is answered.

Having had some experience diving in dark, moving water (enough to decide to avoid it) I can to a small extent appreciate the special type of courage it takes to be in a marine rescue unit, who will go in under conditions that had me decide to stay on shore and drink a beer.

Great work!

Am I missing something but not much skill needed in this incident. Any pontoon boat operator could have done the same thing.

I am sure Georgas immediately called the media for this fluff story on a slow Holiday Weekend.

I am sure the Lifesaving Award was already approved before their OT slips were submitted.

Worthem died. Two stories latter the four drug homicides are mentioned. The day before WBBM is doing a promo for PBS wxx? Friday local news hour with Mary Mitchell supporting J-Fled's secret gang talk. WBBM also has J-Fled on tonite at 9:30pm on their non-confrontaionaly (no call in) news affairs program. Is J-Fled in a full court press to keep his job? I think it's pretty obvious.

Off Topic:

An 18-year-old man who was struck by a fire truck responding to a call in the West Side Austin neighborhood Friday afternoon was hospitalized in “very serious” condition.

The man was hit about 2 p.m. near the intersection of West Chicago and North Central avenues by an engine responding to a fire, according to police News Affairs Det. Jamie Duignan. The truck had its lights and sirens activated.

Why the F&%k do we have Detectives at News Affairs? Sorry, just doesnt seem right with all the stuff we have going on in this city. If he or she wants to work News Affairs, they should have to give up the D2A spot. Anyone else think I'm off base with this?

Empty-headed and dim-witted also, but knows how to mystify men. She made lieutenant because she was spoon fed the answers to the lieutenant's test in a Maurer secret study group and then promoted to the exempt spot of Director of News Affairs. Nothing says the spot has to be filled by a civilian.

Don't take it that everyone at that station is a J-Fled supporter. NewsRadio 78 doesn't have the sharpest reporters in the drawer. One time I heard J-Fled on the radio there and the interviewer asked him some very pointed questions, which J-Fled lied in his responses to. I knew right away that Weis was spouting BS in response to those questions, but the moderator for that interview didn't catch on to it at all. I think 780 doesn't allow call ins because they just don't know what anyone of us would say once they would put a caller on the air, and they don't want to burn out that '7-second delay' button!
All reporters know how much WEISel is loathed throughout this dept, and even at his old agency by now. And even though Mary Mitchell may support Weis's gang meeting (and let's face it, other cities have done it also...Weis doesn't have anything original to bring to the table here, or anywhere else), Mitchell and Steinberg have publicly called for his resignation in some earlier columns due to his ineffectiveness.
