Deadbeat Prisoners

  • Kensley Hawkins is a deadbeat, according to the state of Illinois.

He owes $455,203.14 to cover the costs of his stay at the Stateville Correctional Center in Joliet. Hawkins has been in prison since Nov. 19, 1982. His jailer is also his debt collector.

Hawkins is fighting in court to stop the state from seizing about $11,000 in his bank account to partially satisfy the debt. The 60-year-old earned the money by working while he's been behind bars, making about $75 a month.
Here's the rub:
  • Under Illinois law, prisoners are liable for their incarceration costs. Most offenders do not have the means to pay, but the department can begin collection proceedings against those who have sufficient assets. Hawkins' lawyers said the threshold is $10,000 in assets. The state requires prisoners to file financial statements.
We're happy as hell the state keeps track of how much these scumbags cost taxpayers. Anything earned should go to defray prison costs or to restitution owed the victims. And although he thinks his intentions are noble...
  • Hawkins began working soon after he entered Stateville, where he was sentenced to 60 years for the 1980 slaying of a 65-year-old man and attempting to kill two Chicago policemen. He wanted to send some money to his daughter, who was 8 when he went to prison...
...if you want to support your daughter, how about being there instead of being in prison?

The state lawyer gets fed, the other lawyer gets fed, and the guy who earned for it along with the people of Illinois get squat. I think there is a lesson here somewhere. Had he spent the money, all would have been simply wonderful. Damn him for his frugality!

This is why Illinois is broke!

Quinn & "Moonbeam" Brown the ticket to the future!

The State sure is good with math when it benefits THEM. Did the crime in 1980, convicted & sentenced to 60 years, wouldn't the release date be around 2040?

Strap them on bikes and make them pedal to make electricity for 60 years. No pedaling, no food. There you go, no nuclear problem in Illinois now!

The family of the dead guy and the officers who were shot should file civil against him for the money....It's not much but then again nothing will be left for the state...LOL

30 years served for a 65 year sentence is a pretty good deal. I was informed 2 days ago that the man that tried to murder me while on duty and in uniform with 6 witnesses was offered probation, by the Judge, because he only had one misdemeanor conviction in his past (Vincent M. Gaughan, Judge). Things like this should be known to whoever reads these blogs.

Awww... is the poor killer going to lose his money???

FUCK YOU, YOU MURDERING PIECE OF SHIT!!!

Why are we paying tax money to these assholes anyway?

We should be REQUIRING them to work for food.

NO WORK? You get bread and water.

WORK? You get regular food.

DON'T LIKE IT? Don't go to jail!

Maricopa County, Arizona's Sheriff Joe Arpaio should be in charge of Americas' ENTIRE prison system. I love this guy! He has them sleeping on cots, in tents out in the desert and wearing PINK prison jumpsuits.

Criminals "rights" should be terminated the second they enter the cell doors. These fricking moron bleeding heart left wing democrats have just taken this shit waaay too far. It's gotta stop!

I blame the pond scum lawyers. They'll sue ANYBODY for anything just to collect their fees. They are getting too much money from the government for these lawsuits. Let them fund their own witch hunts and lose and see how long these stupid suits continue!

This country is so in need of tort reform and reorganization of our legal system that its not even funny. Of course, all the law makers are lawyers, so they have no incentive to clean it up.

Our legal system is the laughing stock of planet Earth!

There are all manner of industrial jobs that can be delegated to prison details.

Years ago, this is how it was. In prison? You work. Maybe you're making furniture for state institutions, maybe you're stamping out license plates, trusted, low risk inmates were out paving roads, etc.

Many institutions did away with prison industry because of safety concerns- obviously, one can make some pretty nasty shit if they're given metalworking tools or the like, but I believe this is how it should be.

Go to prison, you go to work to pay back the society you took something from. Don't want to work? OK. Bread, water, 23 hours in a cel, no TV and a bible.

Happy 25-Life, Pookie.
