PAWS canceled its upcoming weekend event due to "safety concerns from unpredictable crowds and weather conditions" although the City claims PAWS applied for a permit too late. We've never seen a late permit that couldn't be greased through in this town though - witness all the building permits pulled months, even years later (with a fine attached) for all sorts of projects.
Now, the Illinois State Rifle Association has issued a "travel advisory" for any members headed to Chicago:
The ISRA is warning its members to think twice about selecting Chicago as a vacation destination this summer. This warning was issued in response to a recent dramatic upswing in violent crime in the windy city. Most notably is a spate of so-called “flash mob” attacks where as many as two dozen young men ambush and savagely beat their victims before robbing them of their valuables. One recent flash mob victim was a 68 year-old man.
The bulk of the flash mob attacks have taken place on Chicago’s near north side and Gold Coast areas to include North Avenue Beach and the Magnificent Mile. The attack locations are within the general vicinity of tourist attractions including Navy Pier, Lincoln Park Zoo, and Millennium Park.

SCC does anyone have video clip of Mc on phone with mayor during exclusive local TV interview in Mc's office yesterday? (was it w. Jay Levine?) I've never seen any top cop look more uncomfortable and less confident in a televised report.
First, Mc kept asking mayor "Can you hear me now?", and walking around his office by the big windows in order to try for better cell phone reception from mayor!

NO. Every thirty seconds, a missing REPORt might be generated (which I think is an overstatement).
In truth, only 5-10% of those cases are legitimate. And, very few of those go unsolved.

This is the african-american community's problem to solve. Had an old aunt who used to say when she saw young people acting up and hurting themselves and others "They are saying 'Do you love me enough to stop me?' " Where are the adults - parents, aunts, uncles, teachers? Many have lost their "moral authority" because these kids know they have been and are still being used for another agenda. For the second weekend in a row, visitors to Chicago's posh Gold Coast were terrorized by so-called "flash mobs." On Memorial Day, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel ordered the very popular North Avenue Beach closed. Twelve homicides have occurred over the last five days and the summer crime season is still in its infancy. With a majority of schools letting out by June 17, the city can expect another wave of violence in which children are the unfortunate victims and perpetrators. Lamentably, it is a cycle that the Chicago Police Department (CPD) and residents must deal with each year, even if the mayhem has abated.
According to recent statistics, violent crime is down for the 29th consecutive month. However, in the current climate there is an impression that a war has erupted, and acting Superintendent Garry McCarthy (whose confirmation vote it today) must now handle the “heightened violence” that has afflicted downtown. Yet, why are the robberies and assaults in the city center superseding the other violent and fatal transgressions that are occurring across the city?

Attempted Robbery
Chicago Campus, 6/4/2011
On Saturday June 4, 2011, at approximately 8:26 p.m., a male not affiliated with Northwestern was the victim of an attempted robbery in Chicago. The victim had parked his motor scooter on the north side of Chicago Avenue across from Wieboldt Hall (300 block) when approximately 15 to 20 male African Americans, all approximately 16 to 20 years old, approached him. One of the subjects threw a baseball at the face of the victim and knocked him to the ground. Several others from the group punched and hit him several times. The victim tried to protect himself and fought back. The subjects eventually fled eastbound toward the lake. Chicago Police and Northwestern University Police responded, and Chicago Police later arrested three members believed to be part of the group on mob action charges. The victim was treated on the scene by Chicago Fire Department paramedics. No proceeds were taken from the victim. The victim could not provide descriptions of the multiple subjects involved.
University Police remind all community members to use caution when traveling, especially at night.
We have large Liberal colleges all across the lakefront (Univ of Chicago, DePaul, Loyola, Northwestern) They are all on board with the "Save the poor murderers" "Lock up the Police" "Che lives" etc. Why aren't the Sociology Professors lining up students to go out and reason with the poor, deprived, victims of the Man, and show them the unity they feel and the tears they shed from their bleeding hearts. They can collect IPODS from other students to give these poor wretches.

I stopped bringing my family downtown years ago due to the thug element. Most of the suburbs have nice places to go out and dine, shop, see movies, etc; etc; with-out the thug element. As far as I'm concerned, the city & the liberals got what they asked for with these flash mobs. As "un-P.C." as this may sound, the only way to put an end to savagry down-town is to round up roaming groups of white-T-shirt wearing south-sider teens who have no legimate business downtown, and put there asses back on the red line southbound. I'm surprised that this hasn't already been done. Have a large group of coppers in plain clothes hanging around a known hot spot. When someone is approached by these flash mobs then everyone pounces on these mutts and they get a little taste of their own medicine, then get hauled off to jail. Oh, and it would surely help if the Mayor and the new Superintendent met with the ASA and worked out a deal to actually prosecute these goofs.
I wonder why they are not classifying and charging these fools with a hate crime! Oh yea we know why!

A TERRIFIED teenage girl has been fined £500 for knocking unconscious a masked stranger who stalked her home from a nightclub in what lawyers have called an "exceptional" case.
Claire Burleigh, 19, was pounced on by Sean Docherty, 43, as she was about to open the door of her Bathgate home, Livingston Sheriff Court heard yesterday.
Docherty had earlier been thrown out of the nightclub following a drunken argument.

Went on to show a pretty blonde walking into the Potbelly on E. Ontario st. She was the lamb. Then they described the attackers and showed 3 assholes in red t shirts. This is what happens when the criminal flash mobs smell the weakness in the police presense downtown. The problems started when Daley got rid of the police downtown traffic/window details and hired the useless TMAs. For the past 30 years every academy class had to work for 3 to 4 months directing traffic or working the business district downtown. That was nearly 100 additional officers on all busy intersections from chicago/michigan to roosevelt/michigan and to the lake. We even had additional officers at north ave beach. 100 extra officers is more than are assigned to days in the 1st district alone!!! What Daley and the aldermen failed to realize was that these officers didnt just direct traffic they also, by presense alone deterred crime.
I always said once the TMAs took over that there would be more problems downtown. They are worthless. They have no police powers. They have been flashed mobbed themselves.
Just another example of how f***ed up the city is. They are getting what they paid for. Less police manpower/less presence = more crime.
Hire more police. Get rid of the worthless TMAs. Put police back on every corner downtown. That will take care of the problem.

All you have to do is charge a fee to enter the lake and post another lakefront detail for da police. What the fudge, do I have to run the show. They should also split MSF and TRU throughout all districts. A high crime distict will not be fixed with a few extra cops that were always there anyway. I also fought back. Spent a day in the hospital. Two arrests, one juvenile. It was my first time ever at criminal court or juvenile court. Everyone should go down there once to see how broken it is. The adult got probation after I showed up twice. But here is where it gets kind of funny,,,the juvenile actually claimed self defense ! The judge actually laughed at him and his public defender kept trying to stop his sorry dumb ass from talking. Quote: " If you attack someone in a mob, and they get the best of you, you can't claim self defense in kicking them in the head when they are holding onto your private parts. " I still wonder if he'll ever be able to reproduce, oh btw, he actually got time in juvenile detention.
All this to say: It's been happening for a few years ! The media finally picked up on the story, and I have never been happier to see a cop in my entire life ! I never felt better than hearing the cop who was filling out the report say: " Six assholes less than half your age, and you tore off one of their nutsacks, you didn't do to bad old man."

Third, I'm not sure what your point is, the cases in 012 are still open, although 012 and the Detectives have arrested some offenders already.
Last time I checked, identifying and arresting offenders has a little bit to do with clearing the case.

I was on the job a long time ago and I can tell you that if things like this occurred, the area would have been saturated with police and a lot of severe beatings would have taken place. Maybe some people would have even been arrested and there would have been no beefs. If there had been complaints they would have been ignored.
This will not happen today.
The politicans have succummed to the will of the liberals, the store front reverends and other idiots. They have given them what they wanted, a softer, gentler police department.
We hear officers saying back us up and let us do our job. This is admirable as the officers want to be the police, but today even if the bosses back you up, beat one of these assholes and YOU are going to jail.
Finally the media is reporting what is happening on the near northside and downtown. Do not be fooled by these parasites. They will turn on you in a heartbeat and report and broadcast any moves you make to rid the city of the vermin who stalk and prey on its citizens. They will do anything to sell newspapers and tell stories.
Also, and this is very important. The man who sits in the White House has told his lackey, Eric Holder, to investigate any urban police department engaged in racial profiling.
It's not fun to sit back and watch innocent people be the victims of violent crime, and sure, a few scum will be arrested and maybe sent to jail. But the way to stop this nonsense post haste is to read paragraph one.
A word to the wise.
There will be more attacks, shootings, homicides and aggravated batteries. This is what the aldermen, mayor and the chief. They know exactly what they are doing. That's why we will lose tourists, students, which equals MONEY! Good job! Don't blame me though, I didn't vote for him.

Until you start letting the honest citizens of Chicago arm themselves for their own protection, the predators will not learn. You can not hire enough police officers to handle the amount of punks.

why doesn't the government stop funding these punks and their families (i.e. the parent in charge) with LINK, section 8 housing, WIC, etc....start taking away the cash and maybe they will wake up.

I'm spending the summer in Chicago (still really happy to be coming back home) and am usually pretty aware of my surroundings. However, a flash mob seems trickier. So what can I legally carry on my person in order to better protect myself, or what can I do in addition to being more vigilant than usual?

Not sure if you're a police officer, but I am looking for suggestions for the best defense item to carry when avoiding the situation or running away are not viable options.
It seems like Bear Deterrent Spray is one of the better, legal-in-Chicago options to use against multiple attackers (outside only, of course). And I wanted to get some input from experienced officers who know what works best. For example, unless you're are highly trained in knife skills, carrying a 2.5" blade is probably a bad option. There must be something police officers know, because they've seen more than the rest of us, that works better in most situations.
