Downtown Shooting

  • A man was shot as he walked to work on the State Street bridge over the Chicago River at the height of the evening rush hour today.

The 29-year-old man was walking north on the west side of the bridge, near Wacker Drive, when the gunman approached and shot him in the head at very close range about 5 p.m...

The victim was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious-to-critical condition, according to fire officials. The man was able to communicate with detectives, but police did not have further information on his condition.

Amazingly, the Tribune gave a description:
  • The gunman was described as black, with a thin build, with a short afro haircut, wearing a light blue dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up and black shorts. He may also be wearing a rain coat.
And then the hilarity from people who obviously don't keep up on the news:
  • Gary Reidy was eating at Smith and Wollensky when he thought he heard a car backfiring. "You don't expect this kind of thing on a Monday afternoon in downtown Chicago."

Carl Burson Jr., 32, was on his way to a movie. "This is not a war zone, this is downtown Chicago," Burson said. "We don't do that down here."

Referring to a 6-year-old killed over the weekend in the Englewood neighborhood, he added: "What is going on in the world today?"

Really guys? "You don't expect..." and "We don't do that down here"? Where have you been all summer? And the past two years? We've been expecting something like this since the video of the tourist with the bullet through his hotel room after the Taste. We just haven't determined if this was it yet. But it's definitely on the horizon.

Posted this is the comments on the trib last night. At around 530 last night I was threatened by a 40 something black man, 5'6ish, on a bike, wearing a cubs jacket and hat as I stood at dearborn and Hubbard waiting for the.northbound 22.

I have seen this guy before, he stopped in front of me and started babbling about how he knew that the shooting was drug related because he used to be in that type of thing but he's been on parole for fifteen years, etc etc. I politely nodded and asked how I could help, a flash of anger took over his face and he just stared at me. At that time I asked a little sterner what he wanted, money, a smoke, etc? Just staring with this angry face. At this point I backed away and put my arms up saying you are bothering me, i have nothing to give you.

He called me a "f'ing piece of s---" and told me I should "watch my back" from now on. A bit unsettling to say the least.

Not really looking forward to walking from Clark to state this AM.

I've got just under three decades on and that has not been my experience on this job. I love to hear the Media expound on that theory of theirs. Bad times turn people into criminals.

Good people are good in bad times. Bad people are bad no matter what. What is the big crime explosion the economy is supposed to incite: shoplifting? Bank robberies? That's TV nonsense.

A friend of mine witnessed the shooting yesterday (and bc my friend is white & law-abiding, he sought out the responding cops to provide a statement & description of the perp). He told me that there is no way this was random - the shooter walked right up to the victim, aimed directly at his head, shot, turned & took off, no robbery, not shooting wildly at a crowd, and the the shooter clearly meant to shoot that man, not someone else.

So from what he's told me, and from what I've learned from news coverage & SCC (this was such a high profile incident, the ,mainstream media just cannot ignore it), I figure it was either a premeditated hit, or the victim somehow pissed off the shooter on the street, who decided to play judge, jury & would-be executioner all at once.

/ Not a cop

Remember this well, my friend.

You don't know what they're going to do because they don't even know what they're going to do.

You are being "felt out." Conversation is prelude to assault/robbery.

Keep distance. Distance is your friend. If he can touch you, he can cut you. Stay disengaged. Jump up on top of a four-foot high planter along the front of some building and walk the other way on that; can't follow you on his bike. Throw the ornamental landscaping rocks at his head. No rules. Use everything and anything to your advantage.

There be 180,000 motherf__ers out there and they all "need" something. I am not a dispenser for change, cigarettes, matches, toothpicks, "ink pins." Teach these people to learn to see to their own petty daily needs.
I am not the Street Psychiatrist, either. It's not fair TO ME to expect me to be.

You got a friend, right? You borrowed his ball-peen hammer, and you're bringing it back to him today, got it in your briefcase.

Follow me?

No, you jealous simpleton, the umbrella is necessary to keep the GPR's dry as you take notes. Ain't it funny? The toilet has overflowed clear into downtown...

Heh...

Actually it may be a very good thing.

The smug and formerly safe get to see up close and very personally, some of the demons we've fought with on the West and South Sides for years.

You can holler for The Police all you want while you're being eaten alive...

There aren't any Police to send.

Why?

Because you nodded in consent all these years while public safety in Chicago was gutted for shits, giggles and pure politics.

"Greedy, out of control Cops at fault for City budget mess."

"Damn The Police and all of their cares and concerns! Why should they get anything while we're eating our 401K's? They should be made to work harder and longer for for less. Burn their pension to the ground. Fire 'em all and hire us" etc, etc.

Not a mumbling word about the blatant theft by the stuttering prick et al.

Just noise and distraction to keep the heat off while these dirty fuckers were looting the municipal treasury...

Now you good citizens are worried because a badly depleted (by your consent) Police Department is no longer able to keep the shit from overflowing into your shoes.

Now that Chicago is decending into real chaos, everybody wants to stand with the hated Police and start singing the "we're all in this together" song.

Sell that daley inc. crazy somewhere else... We're stocked clear up to the ceiling with it.

...The Policeman has tried to warn you for years.

"You guys are just complaining, the mayor would never do that to the public."

The Police are out of control??

...We beg to differ!

What???!!! I was a caddy too... when I was in high school and then a few summers in college. Double bagged it and made good money for a kid. Then I grew up and became a police officer. A position in society that garners respect from the genuine members of it. Read: shitheads are not members of society.
Point is that any police officer that would caddy for an exempt in hope of getting a merit spot is not a real police officer, or a man for that matter. Caddying is a job for kids and grown men who do it for pros on tour and make hundreds of thousands a year doing it. I cannot phathom how a Chicago police officer would caddy for an exempt. It is a subservient and frankly demeaning job for an adult to do. Don't get me wrong its fine for anyone under the age of twenty. It's good money and you are still a kid then and should respect your elders, but a p.o. Caddying for an exempt! I'm sorry but does anyone hear me? For shame a cop would bow his.head so low.

No, you jealous simpleton, the umbrella is necessary to keep the GPR's dry as you take notes. It's not like filling out a report in the squad and passing the receipt out the window to the victim who is standing in the rain. Any dic who is not prepared for adverse weather conditions isn't much of a detective. If I had gotten a dollar from every beat guy I saw sitting in the car at a scene, I won't have to worry about the pension going dry.

How come none of the area 4 dics have unbrellas out when they are at a crime scene?

All you people over-reacting about someone carrying an umbrella at a scene need to get a life. WHO CARES?????? Staying dry is COMMON SENSE! If my commander, co-worker or anyone else I work with on the department wants to carry an umbrella, so what? If you need to use your hands, you can easily drop the umbrella or toss it aside. All you tough guys are so worried about how it must look. I personally could give a shit how it looks.

Seriously, in 25 years on the job..........crime scene...........oversized umbrella...Only in Area 3 and bla bla bla bla bla....................

Once again, more criticism about NOTHING, from an incompetent BLOWHARD, who cannot even conduct a PRELIMINARY investigation without fucking it up, in some way, shape, or form, each and every time! Your brain topped-out at "parker & mover". Your envy of intelligent people, properly conducting an investigation has you realizing how inept you are, which gives you an irresistible urge to complain about something irrelevant to what is actually occurring. All mouth, no intelligent thinking.

He called me a "f'ing piece of s---" and told me I should "watch my back" from now on. A bit unsettling to say the least.

Not really looking forward to walking from Clark to state this AM.

Advice from a Chicagoan: Thank him for giving you a heads and not killing you. People from outside Chicago see the pretty potted flowers and polished bean, but us old chicagoans. Know Better! Disengage and walk, you owe no one nothing! When that doesn't work say and repeat 3 times.

Get the Fuck away MF or I kill you're MFin ass!

Say it like you mean it!

The Teacher

PS Sorry for the swearing.
