Victims Win - Twice

Two heartwarming stories sent to us by readers. First up:
  • An overnight worker returning home after dropping off his wife late this morning interrupted a burglar carrying the man's television and Xbox out of his Park Manor apartment building, then won a knife fight with the burglar, police said.

The burglar, a man in his 20s, was in critical condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with multiple stab wounds, said Chicago Police News Affairs....
  • The resident confronted the burglar in the building foyer, and the burglar pulled out a knife, police said.

After the resident pulled a knife to defend himself, the two got into a fight that spilled out onto the street...

Arriving officers had to pull them apart. End result? Offender in critical condition and awaiting charges.

Next up, and amusing as hell:

  • Robbing a man who turned out to be an ultimate fighter proved to be a bad decision for a convicted felon, who is now in bad shape as he is held on bond.

Police say around 11:30 p.m. Friday, Anthony Miranda, 24, walked up to a car parked at 55th Street and Kenneth Avenue, just a few blocks from Midway International Airport.

Miranda asked the driver for a lighter, and the driver said he didn’t have one. Then Miranda pulled a handgun and demanded that the driver hand over his money, police said.
  • At some point, Miranda’s attention was diverted and the victim was able to grab control of the gun and the two wrestled.

During the fight, Miranda accidentally discharged his own gun, shooting himself in the ankle, police said.

The victim — who told police he is a martial arts expert and ultimate fighter — was able to pin Miranda down until police arrived.

Pin him down? Get a load of his mugshot:

Looks like he got pinned up against a can of whoop-ass or two. Nice to see the citizens getting a small measure of justice at their own hands.

F-that! No problem with MMA fighter giving this guy a pumpkin head, but let the media get a hold of a story involving a police officer using force for an "alleged battery against a PO, IF IT DID HAPPEN"

Refer to the recent situation where a female PO protected herself after being jumped and punched in the face. Media called in to question whether the officer was even battered.

I laughed at the story/ enjoyed it.... but I have to feel a bit jealous the MMA gets a "freebie" while police get sued for protecting themselves

Unfortunately then there is this:

Michael J. Kroll, 23, Orland Park, charged with Nov 30 vehicular hijacking of a woman in her 90s at 161 st & Harlem Ave.

Dennis Dodson, 34, no known home address, charged with Sept 23 rape of 83 year old woman at 159th & Harlem Ave.

F-ing cowards need to be aerated.

Not to be picky or anything, but it's pretty much a certainty that the vic wasn't an "Ultimate Fighter", but rather a "Mixed Martial Artist". There is a big difference.

Ultimate Fighting is a mixed martial arts promotion that has essentially become the 'big leagues' of professional MMA. Fighters signed on with the UFC promotion can be called "Ultimate Fighters" however, not all mixed martial artists are "ultimate fighters". It would be like calling anyone with a basketball a NBA player.

Still, good to see the shithead ran into a MMA guy. Most of them are surprisingly cool, but not guys you'd want to fuck with.

Too bad the ultimate fighter didn't break a couple of his limbs, including his trigger finger.

Every time I pull into my garage, especially at this time of year, I have my hand on my gun.

And finally, this a.m., on Channel 5, a story about FOP filing a safety complaint re: lack of security in the stations due to the moron entering with the gun and ammo last month.

A homeless WOMAN killed a policeman a block away from a 'quiet' district station. Yet we welcome these nutjobs to take refuge in our lobbies.

Police stations are there to conduct police business. Since when is it a police function to have sleepovers for neighborhood kids and babysit homeless, mentally ill maniacs?

For God sakes, I have visited numerous suburban depts., and employees are behind bullet-proof glass. You have to show i.d. and state your business just to get buzzed in.

How about doing a simple poll ask the citizens of Chicago for example how long did it take after calling 911 for police to show up? This is not to discredit police at all, this would be just to show the backlog we have! Ask for example: How long for:

*Accident with injuries?
*Domestic?
*Man with weapon gun,knife etc??
*Gang fight?
*Gang loitering?
*House was burglarized how long for response?
*Burglar alarm?
*Other calls!

Gun or no gun, what would you expect the outcome to be? The punk with a gun never expects his prey to fight back and the shock of the attack often is their undoing. It's worked for me a couple of times.
Good job citizen!

I saw that linked from Drudge this morning tonight after work I just knew it would be posted.

Miranda likely noticed his intended victim was in decent shape and was somewhat intimidating but with his illegally possessed gun he was sure he had a monopoly of force.

The solution is concealed carry for those citizens that haven't disqualified themselves by prior bad acts.

Make the criminal unsure that he holds a monopoly of power.

This reminds me of a case I handled a few years ago, there was a crook who was waiting down the street from a bank waiting for someone to come out in order to rob them.

As one man was walking, the offender approached him with his gun out and demanded his money, but the victim decided he did not want to be robbed and grabbed the gun then both of them began fighting over the gun.

The victim was able to get the offender in a headlock and was choking the shit out of him when the offender had a bright idea to shoot the vicitm's arm in order to get away.

But what offender didn't think about that his head was on the other side of the victim's forearm and when he pulled the trigger the bullet went right though the victim's arm and right into his own head.

If that ain't justice, what is?

Good for them! Unfortunately, I'm not a martial arts expert, nor someone too keen on close quarter hand to hand knife fights, so without the proctection of a concealed handgun, I'd be pretty much fucked if I was one of these two.

Question to the cops on here: Let's say some thug tried to rob or assault me in the street, and I pulled out a gun that I legally own here, but obviously cannot carry concealed to protect myself or my wife, and shot the guy?

Would I expect to be arrested and treated like a thug criminal on the spot the moment you guys showed after I called 911? Or would I expect sympathy, friendly advice on keeping my mouth shut until I get an attorney, and to get treated with the respect I give to all police?

Thanks,

Reply to this poster: "For anyone who follows these reports, it seems that the question, "Do you have a light?" is always asked before the robbery begins."

I'm not a cop, and realized not long after I moved here to not "cooperate" with these thugs when they do that stuff.

I'm certain that the reason they ask for a light, or $$, bus pass, the time, an "ink pen," etc, is two fold: It can get them closer, physically, to the intended victim, and if they can get the intended victim distracted while they look for the lighter/pen/whatever, they can quickly gain the upper hand.

It's not like the thug really wants a light, he just wants a chance to suprise me with a weapon (or the threat of one).

I'm not trained to fight, but I know to not let one of them close to me.

I have no problem telling them, "No, get away, don't even talk to me," and give them a nasty stink eye look.

Even though I wear a suit & carry a briefcase, if they think I'm a little crazy, they'll move on.

Question on the "creep mobile:" I'm not a cop, and before I moved here from out of state suburban bliss, I had never really noticed the phenomenom of people "riding dirty," that is, with the driver (and passenger) seat backs so far that the person uses the back window to look out.

A friend told me they do this to hide themselves behind the partition between the front & back windows, so other thugs, and police, can't easily ID the driver.

Do you cops on here agree with that explanation? It makes sense to me.
