Murders 21, 22, 23 and 24

Not only did we blow past the March 2011 total (22 total murders), Chicago did it in STYLE!
  • Four men were killed and 11 other people wounded in shootings Saturday night and Sunday morning across the city's South and West Sides.

Rumor has it that Blackberries across the city exploded with the shooting notifications, which as of this moment total 5 dead and 26 wounded in a single warm weekend with all of Sunday still to come.

And once again, it falls on the blog to call for the resignation of a Superintendent who can be described as nothing but a failure, a New York charlatan who has done nothing but destroy the Chicago Police Department. Morale is shot, equipment is broken, training is inadequate, leadership is nonexistent, and the entire ability of the police department to respond to crime and disorder problems is called into question.

And Rahm can go fuck himself, too. We're retired...we can say that.

I grew up in Chicago (Harlem & Foster) and moved away in the 80's. As the City deteriorates and becomes more and more hostile I find it less and less likely to come visit or bring friends to see the sights. My of my buddies had dads who worked on the force, and back in the 70's things worked pretty well. Hope you guy's stay safe and retire in one piece. Suggestion: move out of Chicago if you get a chance.

SCC--

Would it be possible to have an open post after detailing some of the det complaints you've heard? Since I got to my new area, no one has told me what to do, how to do things, etc. Not a peep of direction from the sgts., who seem as disgusted as we are. I spend half of my time going from printer to printer looking for my case report, changing settings, looking for my cases.

Also, what is with the 'cover sheets' whenever you print something? It has your PC # on it and the title of what you've printed. This happens EVERY time you print something. I threw away at least 60 of those things yesterday, because I had a million cases and other things to print out. Multiply that by the hundreds of det's 100's of times a day, and you could fill a room with the wasted paper. Whose braniac idea was that????

The lack of direction is astounding. Roll call is just that--a calling of names. Nothing about what is going on, what we are supposed to be doing, etc. I heard we are assigned districts, but nobody has told me anything about it.

These conditions make it impossible to do your job. It took me an hour the other day just to be able to get something to print. We had one printer available. You can have a printer right next to your desk, but you cannot change the settings to print to that computer. I spend more time looking for shit than it did to type it up!!!!!

No cars/radios available unless you are lucky enough to grab one right off the bat. I know the troops on the street have it worse, but us not being able to do our jobs directly affects what is going on out there because we cannot give them the support they need.

Phones ring off the hook. One person to answer phones is ridiculous. Four or five calls come in at once. I still do not have voicemail, so victims I've called have no way to contact me unless they catch me in the office. The time spent duplicating efforts is ridiculous.

What kills me is that no one from cpd's management staff is qualified to run the police department when our sup is fired. Our leadership is lacking in either management capability or police know how. Our system for promoting the most highly qualified individuals (how should I say it) sucks the big one. The city has allowed the political machine decide who is qualified to supervise and manage the troops. There are numerous solutions to this problem but the political machine would not like or approve of them.

Dear SCC,
Just an FYI. Dept. of Revenue out in force in Mt. Greenwood. Now writing tickets for parking across your own driveway. Many of us park this way to keep other vehicles off our driveways, or turning around in them as safety for our CHILDREN, who enjoy darting down the driveway, and playing there. These tickets are $150.00. Many parties at homes, graduations, proms, etc... are upcoming and residents park across TEIR OWN DRIVEWAYS just to utilize parking space. These cowards from DOR are hammering everyone. Would like to know if this is happening in Edison park, and Ravenswood too? It's certainly not happening in Englewood or other havens of the The two legged DOG! They whack "US" because we pay.
Let's start whacking them. DOR rats frequently drive left of center to hang tickets on vehicles, double park, or park ilegally. They also disobey bicycle regulations, and trespass upon private property to see both vehicle license plates and city stickers. They have no police powers or are acting in an emergency situation. Therefore they are subject to the same vehicle codes, and laws of everyone else. Let's start CITING them for their violations, or locking them up for trespass. Rahm and McSkilling sent them to fuck us, fuck them! You want revenue, do it city wide, stop discriminating against the working class, that is employed by the city and has no choice but to pay. Oh Yeah and FUCK both Jesse Jacksons...Thanks SCC, that feels better!

Last night I took the misses out for a nice dinner to a restaurant near water tower. I have never in my life seen such animalistic behavior. I hate to describe it that way, but that is exactly what these youths were acting like. Walking in packs (I estimated one pack at about 75), yelling, running in traffic, fighting in the park. These animals really have no type of social skills that will ever make them worthy of mixing with civilized society. Where are thre parents, how come the reverends, community representatives and the alderman don't have anything to say about this.

If this continues there is no way a tragedy will not occur soon. But I'm sure then the parents, reverends, and other community representatives will be have something to say and sue.

When did your old tired ass retire??!!! Congratulations on reaching the finish line......and these murder totals are reminding me of the numbers back in the early 2000's, at least until maurer was able to get a handle and put a whole lot of new bodies onto the area's that needed them. TRU was a good compliment to the then SOS and later MSF. We had those two units, we had police in the districts and the murder rate went down.
Now they wont hire any poleece, we had/have two guys from the outside changing shit that wasnt broke and white shirts in exempt positions who never worked the street for the amount of time it takes to learn how to supervise us who do work the streets making decisions. Politics dont mix with police work and citizen safety. City hall wants to keep those in charge in charge then city hall needs to HIRE MORE POLICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While murders and shootings were going through the roof, including the senseless slaughter of a 6 year girl in a drive by shooting, Rahm and Supt. McCarthy were walking in the St. Pat's parade and politicking afterward. They have no concern for the citizens and certainly not for the rank and file who have to try to keep a lid on this boiling cauldron of heavily armed booger eaters. The CPD is undermanned and generally without any meaningful leadership. CPD ROEs keep changing and people keep dying. While real strategic and tactical solutions are needed and would work. The powers that be are busy "consolidating" units, setting up exclusive zones and doing other things that serve no tactical purpose but sound good to the lame stream media.
The lack of direction and leadership will likely lead to the injury or death of police officers. The NATO conference will strain the resources of the CPD like never before. The districts will be left without cover so the City can try to keep the protesters downtown from tearing up the city on national television.
Don't get trapped by this politically correct mess. Watch each other's backs, make sure you have sufficient back up, go home safe and sound at the end of watch to enjoy your family.
God Bless the CPD.

When are these idiots/morons/hacks going to realize that a strong police department is the back bone of a large city? A strong police department with support from bosses, politicians, media, and citizens. Happy police are working police. It's not rocket science. The politicians can hire all of the academics, sociologists, and statisticians they want, it's going to come down to the same thing. Happy police are working police. Working police means pro active police work, quicker response times, and actually caring about the job and people. Now the mentality is just the 1st and 16th. The mayor and sup want to make the police the enemy, and now here we are. Possibley record breaking crime numbers, loss of tourism, conventions pulling out, people leaving the city, out of control entitlement culture, ect...

The mayor wants to make it worse by continuing to attack our pensions. They have to realize they are not going to be able to fix this problem once it's broke. It needs to be salvaged while it can. If the current state of affairs going any further, we are done.

The Superintendent is on record numerous times as saying we have enough police. We don't need mass hirings to bring the numbers up to match retirements. In his arrogance, he implied that he was such a great leader HE would make sure violence goes down and stays down. In a radio interview a few months ago he took credit (about 90% of it according to his words) for the decrease in violence. Lets see if he stands up now and takes the blame, or if he just yells at people at the compstat meeting and then promotes the incompetent again. The New York way sucks!

McCarthy sucks, no doubt about it. But the real problem is the fact that the city has hired virtually nobody in the past 5 years. Even if you want to downsize the department, which is a bad idea, it didn't have to be done all at once. McPuppet sounds off exactly as he is told, "we don't have manpower issues." I doubt he believes it. What superintendent, chief, general, admiral etc. wouldn't want more personnel? As a person who really knows and has taught Six Sigma and some of the other quality methodologies at a university level, let me tell you, your attempt (well - McCarthy's attempt) to put crime into predictive metrics and boxes is a hoot. It's like the snake oil of the 21st century.

The best you can do is record historical information and look backwards. Can you predict the future from past events??? Not really.

How good are the guys on the stock market? Every brochure has a ton of charts on how this mutual fund or stock is going to do. WOW - it's a great buy.

Every brochure also has the disclaimer in real small print, past performance does not guarantee future success.

Policing is no different. You might have a good idea where crime is going to pop up from past experiences (like Englewood) but that does not guarantee that problems won't arise in places thought to be crime-resistant (ie. Northwest side, North Michigan Avenue). NO cops around equals a good opportunity.

Crime happens where people think they can get away with it. Less cops in an area that was before pretty quiet, equals a "new market" for Crime, Inc.

They should forget the big staff meetings and make the staff drive around for an hour and make some stops.

MBWA - management by walking around (or riding around) will give "managers" a better perspective than reading and debating charts and graphs.

Not a cop, but not a moron buying off on BS either.

Forty-three days to May Day.
The Detective DIVISION (no, it's not a bureau, no matter what you say, Mr. McCarthy) is in total disarray. Nobody knows who's on first, much less who's assigned to what section, how the cases should be assigned, what the start times are, or how to allocate cars. The physical buildings can't accommodate all the bodies and Constantine Andrews' ridiculous order to eliminate file cabinets (because they offend his design sensibilities) is making it impossible to function administratively.

Forty-three days to May Day. The Department is auditing helmets. Did it suddenly occur to someone downtown that helmets might be helpful in a few weeks? They might put out an order for other critical equipment by, oh, say 20 April. Zero planning, but lots of fun trips out of town for the planners...

Forty-three days to May Day. The businesses in our finest shopping and tourist areas have been armed by the City with nothing more than the empty promise of 'a few thousand' protesters, and 'nothing to worry about'. MANY tourist-related businesses are terrified and planning to close down during this time of 'showcasing Chicago to the world'. Closed shops and boarded up windows. Fine showcase. But that's what happens when you can't - or won't - give them honest information.

mayday. help! s.o.s. help! mayday. Does anybody hear us?

As a police officer I find these shooting tallies a disgrace to the city. Although we as police officers do our best to prevent them, the blame lies clearly on the shoulders of the superintendent, the alderman, and the mayor for complete ineptitude in their leadership and crime fighting strategies. Yet they and their offices have remained silent on this which must equate to legal malfeasance. Policing is a serious occupation and in order to stop this reign of terror, city and department leaders must implement new strategies and allow us to be more forceful with the street gangs who are now running amok everywhere.sadly i fear that the administration could care less.

McCompstat needs to go. We need an experienced Chicago Police Officer to run the show. You can't run this department like New York. Chicago is a bread all its own. You need a person with a lifetime of Chicago knowledge to run the show. Let the police be the police and forget about these stupid Comp Stat waste of time meetings. Put the Detectives back in the Area's they specialize in. The building are still running and your not saving a dime by merging the Detectives. Congratulations on ruining this department.

What scandal/crisis, does the Fortress of Bullshit have in it's bag of tricks that they can pull out next in order to use it and push the news of these shootings, their failure of leadership, off the media's front pages -- creating the usual smoke and mirrors distractions?

If the cook county jail illness story was it then it doesn't seem to be working very well.

Surely they have one saved up...a crisis that can be used....maybe they'll even martyr one of their own clouted ones throwing them under the bus to save themselves eh?

It's everyman for themselves baby!!

You know what I think??

I think it's time to stop letting these people control the talking points of our society. They work for us we don't work for them.

I think it's time to get off our azz and turn off the TV, turn off the computer, grab all your friends and neighbors and go VOTE!!

If you don't know who to vote for and/or are disgruntled, apathetic. Just go down the list and vote out every single incumbent because what we have is not working.

VOTE!

Does the ex-mayor and the aldermen still have their bodyguards and drivers?

Isn't it past the time to do the right thing? Share in the sacrifice.

You people have plenty of money, go hire your own security and stop draining the taxpayers. The ex-mayor is an ex-mayor we owe you nothing.

Yeah we know that it's only just a handful of officers nevertheless let's put it in the words that you constantly preach to us about.

"If one more officer enables us to prevent just one more six year old from getting shot in the head than isn't it worth it?"

Give up your egos and give us our officers back and then DO SOMETHING of value for the people for crying out loud!!

The silence from the city council speaks volumes.

Oh and let's not try pulling out the ol' hand gun control bullshit either.

Gun control had ZERO effect under Daley when it was much stricter and all the hoops of licensing, registration and other nonsense. like the speed trap cameras around the schools, is just a money grab from what is seen as the weak middle class taxpayers who are willing to just sit down shut up and take it.

Every crisis is seen as a money making opportunity with this group. How can we monetize this crisis and make money off of it so we can create some contracts for our friends.

Is it possible to find a politician that is not in it for the money and that is willing to work in the interest of the people and our children's future?

Hey sarge, how about you just worry about hiding in the WCs office doing all the work the WC is supposed to be doing. OOPS!! was that supposed to be a secret??? Aren't you supposed to be on the street when there's one SOMETIMES TWO lieutenants in that office? Both of them cant be that incompetent to need you to do their jobs for them, can they???? Maybe individually, but when BOTH are in there????? Oh yeah, right. They both ARE in way over their heads. I got news for any boss in 011 that decides to give us grief for leaving these stupid boxes. Certain media folks have expressed great interest in supervisors gaming the system. It wont be too hard to forward them and the Supe pictures of you strokes doing shit you're not supposed to be doing and in places you're not suppose to be. Keep pushing. The violence zones in 007 are a disaster. On 1st watch, both wagons are assigned to the same violence zone and if 706 cars are up, most of them stuck there too. The violence zone the wagons are assigned to are in the far northwest corner of the district, so if you need help at 74 and yale, you going to be waiting awhile IF they are allowed to leave (lucky enough, the wagon guys do have the time and knoweledge to start heading without being asked). This is a major safety issue which the city doesn't care about. And keeping on the subject of the wagons, we are our own worse enemies. I don't understand why if you arrest someone and transport them to the station yourself, why do you need a transport for that one female to the area? The wagon can be a great tool to disperse a crowd, but doesn't do any good sitting at 51 and wentworth.

The other failure with the zones is that some beats are only half in the zone. So, if a beat is roughly 6 blocks by 6 blocks, the zone is set up where only 3 and 3 are in the zone. So other cars beats now have to expand to handle the other half of the zone car beats. Half the cars are assigned to 1/3 of the district with the other half handling the other 2/3. How does this make sense? It is a huge safety issue and also a reason for backlogs. 1A calls can sit and wait for half an hour with cars AVAILABLE, but these cars CANNOT leave an area to handle. In order to get police service in the city you have to move to not only a ghetto, but now a designated part of the ghetto? What a joke

3/18/2012 07:33:00 AM

Wait, are you parked on the street, across the driveway, or are you parked on the (lower half) parkway of your own driveway?

Seriously, do you think they're required to check whether the car parked at the curb, blocking a driveway, registers to one of the adjacent houses before they ticket it? And, if the car is registered elsewhere, but parked in the street across some family member's driveway, are they required to be psychic, also?

I don't like them, but maybe we should be just a tad realistic here.

The rats from DOR take the easy ones and never bother with documenting the vehicles with out-of-state plates that have been here for years because their owners are actual residents of Chicago and the vehicles with Illinois plates that are registered to out-of-city addresses, but their owners are actual residents of the city of Chicago. It's too hard for them to write down a sighting of the same vehicle, day after day, week after week, month after month and then write the ticket for not purchasing. There is a buttload of them across the city.

I just hope that McGoof doesn't blame the commander in 009 for the shootings or the rate of crime, because it is NOT HIS FAULT but Mc Carthy's with his useless compstat and wanting to convert us to New York, how's that working? yeah, not at all and the gang members are living it up and yeah we are NOT New York. When McGoof understands that New York is in the East Coast that's when he will get an idea of our streets because that strategy is not working here at all. Keeping officers in box that officer have to stay to patrol that's what causes problems because the gang members know this and makes officer uneffective. The officers who used to be able to execute arrests are being constraint to a tinny little area and that only causes NO RESULTS, let them police or we will be CAPITAL MURDER CITY IN RAPID RATE. As it is the ME's can't handle the bodies yet more to pile up. The fault lies directly in the low morale with more jagoff bosses available in patrol. No officer is going to go out there and try to stop crime when you got petty bosses ready to jamm the officers with pimpy spars, not worth it. In that case, keep the crime and let them shoot each other all day long. The biggest issue is that WE HAVE NO CONFIDENCE IN MC CARTHY, HE IS AN AWFUL LEADER, TAKING EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF WHAT MAKES IT GREAT TO BE THE POLICE AND MAKING US WEAK AND DESTROYING OUR MORALE. No morale, no results...simple as that. KEEP TAKING OUR FREEDOM OF SPEECH, MEDICAL BENEFITS AND GIVING US USELESS SGTS THAT ARE READY TO JAMM US UP FOR PIMPY SHIT AND THIS IS THE RESULT, NO RESULTS. You can try to terrify us all you want, the shift is only 9-10 hrs a day...that's all. Another reason that NYPD was successful was because their Mayor loved and supported the police. In the recent Mayors of Chicago, yeah we get no support just oppression and now the gang members know this and they are shooting like no tomorrow, why should they not? We as officers are standing alone in this fight against crime. Our superintendent does everything than just destroy our morale, the useless FOP fails to properly represent us and our Mayor loves to keep taking benefits and keeps us miserable, if he could...he would have us work for free and asking for welfare. So Mc Carthy should be asked to step down. So much for Mc Carthy's lie that crime is down, huh? I guess you can't cover the sun with one finger...

How much you figure was spent on E-R cost alone.

Say it isn't so SCC, we need you! :(

But good for you, and congratulations. Enjoy your retirement!

Please, please keep up the blog. I've been reading daily to find out what's really going in Chicago, ever since the Daily Southtown ran a story on you back in 2007.

This is still one of my first morning reads, even though I had to move to Boston a couple years ago (very nice to see CPD and CFD on a firetruck in the Southie St Patrick's parade today, btw!)

I still have too many family ties (and my old condo) to give up on Chicago, and really hope to come back to live there some day. So please keep fighting the good fight!

They can't hire police fast enough to save the streets this summer, so hang on, its going to be bloody and violent. And when they do finally realize we need more cops in the street we won't have enough cars and radios for them. It's gonna get A LOT worse before it gets any better. And that not until the snow flies. Not even Tommy Skilling can save Chicago.

The voters get what they deserve, what they voted for, how many of Chicago's finest have to pay the ultimate sacrifice before they learn?

Hurry and go to the tribunes site and click the story of the six year old girl that was killed before it is edited. The reporter has balls. She actually reports that the family of the six year old are gang members and that at her memorial there is a stuffed rabbit with one ear pointed down which is the gang sign of the victims family. Nice to see a reporter that tells the whole story for a change.

Hey SCC I not really sure if one of those shootings even counts towards the total. There was one on Congress & Sacramento with the cassings sitting on the ramp of the X-way. So technically this is State property and it should count towards their totals.ijs

The Chicago Police Department is broken and needs to be fixed
-------------------
I do not think it is fixable with the current city political leadership. You can fiddle with the guys at the top of the department all you want, but until the city changes its ways the chance of anything good happening within the CPD is close to nil.

Hey idiot, I know that--it doesn't fucking work. Everyone in the place has the same problem. You set the printer as the default and it doesn't work. Point 'A' and point 'B' don't connect. And dumbfuck, it's not just my voicemail, there are glitches in the system and a lot of people cannot use their voicemail. The powers that be know, they just don't give a fuck.

I'm glad you're not a det because you jump to conclusions. Reread the post you idiot.

The supe was in Butch McGuires on division all night!

Why shouldn't he drink?

He is in a job where no one likes him. He was brought in basically to sail a sinking ship. He has no knowledge of the organization nor anyone to turn to as his predecessor ran all the bosses with any smarts out of town before he got her. He probably doesn't think much of the command staff (NOTE: I did not say "his" command staff. They were shoved down his throat.) Those around him have their agenda, which is not his. He realizes that the streets are out of control, the rank-and-file don't trust him he can't make them be aggressive because they know better than to do that. He has lost not only considerable numbers but a lot of experienced members. He has no where near the resources he needs. Those that he does have he doesn't have as much control over them as he thinks. CAPS? Try dumping them.

He may want to hire, but the mayor controls that. There is not likely to be any significant hiring for quite a while. And even if there was was, it would not cover attrition. And even if good numbers were hired, it takes a good 2-3 years for them to be somewhat productive. And for detective more than that. And then there is the danger of throwing raw rookies out on to mean streets with no guidance. Not only will they get hurt, but they can cost the city millions. The older officers that could mentor them are virtually all gone.

McGoof is under the delusion that he actually has control. He is trying to control the uncontrollable: people that act impulsively because they have no self-control.

The only thing he rally has any control over is the numbers that CompStat puts out. And even that will wear thin as the public finds out that the numbers are FOS.

Being the Superintendent of Chicago Police is the biggest political fall guy spot in government.

I bet if one searches around 35th street there are a number of bottles hidden in those desk drawers.

It sure seems like 009 is joining the ranks of 07 and 011 but without all the increased manpower or as McNutty says "resources".
Of course if Commander Dave would kick out some of the 7-8 working in his admin office we'd have a few more "resources " to utilize.

3/18/2012 07:36:00 AM

Interesting that you ask about the parents. Just a citizen here, but I was having a conversation with a officer last week. I am of the opinion that those parents who are trying to discipline their children cant due to the "abuse" laws we see nowadays. I told him that any child that I birthed who decides to act out in school, in public or disrepect any adult, I will go upside their head where they stand. He says, "that's abuse and you will get locked up." That's messed up because I am trying to prevent the creation of another thug/delinquent. I told him "funny how the very police who will lock a parent up, will be the first one asking where the parents were." Some of us do care, some of us are outraged by the way these "minors" are acting, some of us have just given up because we are vilified by the teachers, dcfs, the law, etc..when all we;re trying to do is be responsible parents. So in support of the police, I say "if you ever catch mine out clowning, beat they asses and tell me about it later."

Last night we had a wonderful time playing a new drinking game we invented, called "blackberrry ping".

It goes like this, any time the blackberry indicates a person shot, you take a shot. Man did we laugh and drink ourselves into a stuper.

Not a single person was walking straight after our fun filled night of drinking to all the people shot in the City of Chicago.

So, if you are important enough to be in a position that requires a blackberry, like I am, try "blackberry ping" gaurenteed to get you smashed.

Good times, Good times!!!!!!!

Dear SCC,
Just an FYI. Dept. of Revenue out in force in Mt.

3/18/2012 07:33:00 AM

I got ticketed for parking in a permit zone where the only sign was half a block up and faded to hell. Lost my appeal (surprise!). Every time I see the DoR on their bikes I give them the finger and tell them to get out of my neighborhood. Aside from turning the hose on them, what else can you do?
