Let's Make a Deal!
- City officials and a national nurses organization cut a deal today that will allow a protest rally in Daley Plaza next Friday before the NATO summit begins, in return for the nurses dropping their plans to march through downtown.
Earlier this week the city revoked permission for the nurses group to march to Daley Plaza on May 18 on the grounds that the demonstration was expected to grow well beyond the estimated crowd of 1,000 people.
The march was to be diverted to Grant Park for the rally. Other protest groups joined the nurses in attacking the move as a city attempt to limit free speech during the May 20-21 gathering of world leaders in Chicago.
So we're under a week now and no word on hours, assignments, breaks, bathrooms, eating, etc.

The city is 100 percent un prepared because they have no order out yet for anything and they allowed days off this weekend so far into next week. Nobody is on call, nobody is waiting to be called to assemble and nobody has any type of gear with them at work. Please, set something up for saturday or sunday to teach these idiot bosses that they are screwing everything up. Lord knows by keeping me in the dark they are screwing my life up.. still dont know whats going on and if I will have to find sitters and For what times I will need sitters.. Its not so easy to do, im a single father and cant just come up with a sitter if I get put on that midnight watch.

The biggest demonstration by police officers held in England and Wales on Thursday demanded the government halts its cuts and "privatisation" of the service.
More than 30,000 officers marched through the capital, said the Police Federation, in the only action they are legally entitled to take, in a show of defiance against budget cuts and proposed changes to the service.
The last time they carried out a similar demonstration, in 2008, they numbered around 20,000, and the federation said this time it was a display of the anger of rank and file officers faced with cuts to their pay, pensions and changes to their working conditions.
Some officers wore T-shirts demanding full industrial rights – the last time officers went on strike was in 1919 but the government banned them from taking such action again. In a symbolic nod to the 16,000 officers the federation say will be cut in the next two years, the same number of marchers wore black baseball caps as they walked from Millbank, past the Home Office to Parliament Square and on to Waterloo Place.
Carrying banners stating "Police for public not for profit", the marchers booed and slow-handclapped as they passed the Home Office. Others chanted "Theresa May, Theresa May, leave our pensions and our pay". All the officers had taken a day off work to join the protest.
Phil Abbiss, from the West Yorkshire federation, said the demonstration was the voice of officers protesting against the 20% cuts being imposed on the service by the home secretary. "It is simple, we cannot protect the public whilst sustaining losses in police numbers of this magnitude," he said. "The government's answer is to privatise us by stealth so the likes of G4S will be patrolling the streets, that is why we are all here today."

Ah, they are down at Near North. Have been all week. Got mine a couple a days ago. You might want to bring your mask with you. They have a list of people who had their masks tested and if you are not on the list, no filter until they test the mask. Test takes 10 mins tops.

Last night 12-MAY-12 on 1st watch there were five agg batts to p.o. one charge of attempting to disarm a police officer and two paramedics agg batt to protected employee.
Once again the offenders will walk out with a smile on their face and a slap on their wrist. I hope all of the injured officers recover from their injuries. One officers was hit with his baton on the top of his head and sustained a pretty bad laceration. Another officers dislodged his shoulder.
This should remind us to always watch out for each other.

OT. Someting to think about on pension reform. If they are able to change retirement age for current VESTED employee's now. They will never stop changing it in the future. They will be able to use future changes as blackmail during contract talks. There are several of us who will be hiring our own labor lawyer to sue the city in a class action for breech of contract. Be ready if this reform passes, to resign that day. If you do, its looking like, they will at least owe you the percentage you earned up til then and collect that at 50. If you are not able to do that and stay on, your are rolling the dice for the future.

Porta Johns wont work but the dept is keeping their plans hush hush until the day of. Fucking assholes and what do you think they'll have? Dozens of porta johns. where in the hell is there any room whatsoever for removing and placing aside all that gear (bullet proof vest, turtle gear vest, baton, gas mask, duty belt, arm and shoulder pads, gloves, leg pads, etc). on the extremely tiny and cramped floor of a porta john? I dont think so! not to mention the filth and piss on the floor. The owners and staff and patrons fought them off until police arived.

It's a set up for the speed cameras. Current speed limit is 30 mph. If the "new" limit is 20 mph, then you will get ticketed for what is now considered normal.

Here is a person with some aptitude and brains. While having a college education should be an advantage, a college education does not guarantee neither a good job nor success. But we need more people like you on the job. Some of these colleges are scams. I have seen police officers with master’s degrees from Calumet College who cannot neither read nor write too well. The sad part is that these officers really think that they are highly educated. But, before anyone says that I do not have a college education, I hold a degree that is higher than a master’s.

I fled a higher paying job twenty-two years ago and took my degree from a real university with me to do the last of the real mens jobs. So did two generations before me. I'd work until 63 or even 65 if I was healthy, the family approved-how can anyone disapprove of 118K per year answering phones to advise the beat guy on the proper course of action-and I was still having fun! In fact I think I'll write a to-from and suggest they raise the retirement age to 85 and get my fathers ass up off the sofa!
So dont knock me I have 19 yrs on making 80k a year with a g.e.d. Worse case I have to work til 60 it will suck but probably better off than the avg college graduate these days .
I fled a higher paying job twenty-two years ago and took my degree from a real university with me to do the last of the real mens jobs. So did two generations before me. I'd work until 63 or even 65 if I was healthy, the family approved-how can anyone disapprove of 118K per year answering phones to advise the beat guy on the proper course of action-and I was still having fun! In fact I think I'll write a to-from and suggest they raise the retirement age to 85 and get my fathers ass up off the sofa!
yeah, good for you... a real feel good story of the year but guess what. I dont get to sit my ass talking on a phone.. Im the beat guy on the other line suffering. 25 years on still answering jobs, bad knees, bad back having to get in and out of the car dealing with sh*theads day in and day out. Denied time due and the rest of the crap that Ive been dealing with for the past 25 1/2 years. The only thing that is good is that I get all of july off and all of december. I work days and thats good enough for now. No fucking way im working till im 60. i can max out at 55 which Is exactly when I intended of leaving. I have no plans of staying until im 60.. no fkn way. I need to live after this job and I want to enjoy every single day of retirement.. no way im loosing 5 years of that because of 9.5 and his bullshit.... and the last thing.. this use to be the last mans job.. It no longer is. We lost that about 10 years ago.
So how do you like 20mph on ALL Chicago residential streets? Better like it. Gabe Klein from the Racoon's staff has released a plan to have all Chicago residential streets 20mph. What the fuck are these ignorant assholes smoking on the 5th floor. Why not just trade all our cars in for horses.

It's a set up for the speed cameras. Current speed limit is 30 mph. If the "new" limit is 20 mph, then you will get ticketed for what is now considered normal.

You must have missed the several dozen posts here on SCC that said the new school and park zones will cover about two thirds of the city.
In other words, most Chicago streets will be 20mph now. And not just the side streets. Reading comprehension, try it.
Does anyone even know what the nurses are protesting? I mean they are paid fairly well. There is a shortage of nurses so they arent getting laid off. So whats the beef?
