National Award

  • A Chicago Police sergeant was honored at the White House Saturday evening for successfully capturing two assailants in an armed robbery in the Hermosa neighborhood late last year, a made-for-TV incident that also including freeing six victims – three of them children -- who had been bound with duct tape inside the store.

Srgt. Don Jerome, who works in the Grand Central district, received a TOP COPS award from the National Association of Police Organizations and was honored by both President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden during a ceremony in the White House Rose Garden.

He was among 34 police officers from 10 different states honored by the Washington-based group.

Amazingly, the Tribune left the comment section open for this article. Not so amazingly, as of this posting, there isn't a single comment posted. All those so eager to bash the cops are rendered speechless by heroic actions it seems.

Well kodos to the sgt but they are using him as a tool for their own personal gains. In a few weeks or months these people will really show you their true gratitude when your pension/healthcare/wages are cut.

Just had to get the "children" in there too so the NATO people will feel safe and have stories to tell eh?

Well, that "crashing through the storefront glass during a struggle" business does sound like something off of a cop show. Maybe the Trib readers did a quick scan and decided that it was actually a review of a TV program.

Anyway, I'm glad to know that Sgt. Jerome is out there. Many, many thanks.

OT More on pension reform. As the retirement age is raised watch for the city to become very aggressive on the wellness care. Other places have done this. Your old you develop a condition. They continue to make you come in for tests and tell you you aren't doing enough. They monitor what you eat drink etc. they can even make you quit a second job if they deem you are not sleeping enough. They eventually start charging you more for your health-care. They should call it compsat care. But it is a very real tactic.

I do not know if the department has recognized this sergeant for being selected as Top Cop. I am now retired. What I do know, is the department under previous superintendents and especially Hilliard, totally ignored every police officer who received an award from outside agencies especially NAPO. No recognition, nothing nada. When you go to these award presentation which are held every year in Washington DC, you will see the brass from every department in every state which has an officer honored, with the exception of Chicago. TV amd movie stars who play police officers always show up at the receptions to honor these fine officers along with city officials and mayors. But from this town and this department, nothing. Typical

I wasn't there but would like to say nice job. But as far as a merit promotion just because he "did his job". Sorry I don't agree. There are many p.o.s who go above and beyond and make great pinches whether it be shooting, homicides, armed robberies etc and even those who were shot in the line of duty and no mention of a merit promotion because of it. One good arrest doesn't deserve a merit promotion especially to Lt.

Considering the supes drivers, people that work inside, and some that have never made a felony arrest make it every class, id have no problem with him making merit. At least he did something.

Maria Pena and Carlos Velez took a total of 9 unearned promotions between the two of them, without ever passing an exam. They did nothing to deserve them. They had the nerve to dump Don from tact to midnights and Velez even denied one of Don's awards before being over-ruled on that dumb decision. A big FUCK YOU goes out to the two biggest merit moochers on this department. Finally, one of the working police you step on every day gets a little recognition!!

5/13/2012 03:33:00 PM

Use your head tough guy. They're going to make merit lieutenants whether you like it or not. 30%. That means somewhere around 10 merit spots, give or take one or two. Now who would you rather see get at least one of those merit spots? More quadruple merit hacks that NEVER did any police work such as C. Velez, M. Pena, B. West or would you rather see a sergeant who actually takes being the police seriously get that bump? An experienced Sergeant that tries to take care of his people and still be the police. Don comes off as arrogant a lot of the time, but you show my just ONE merit LT in the last 5 years that has anywhere near the street resume that he has. There isn't one. If he doesn't get the bump, it will be the biggest slap in the face to ANY worker of any rank out there because I can promise you, we are one more class of Velez's and West's from certain doom on this joke of a Department!

You better hope you meet the right people, because you sure as hell aren't going to be passing any promotional exams, even if they were giving them, genius.

Sgt. Jerome is a great police officer. He is not afraid to get his hands dirty. He isn't afraid to answer jobs in the 30 sector (like some Sgt.). He doesn't enjoy lecturing to other officers as if he is a fucking know it all (like the Sgt. with the Irish accent). There are plenty of other good Sgt. in 025 who work with officers and NOT against them (like the Sgt. with the Irish accent).
