NATO Protests Start to Fizzle?
Members of Occupy Chicago and people from across the country gathered in an aging warehouse just outside Chinatown today to discuss their opposition to next weekend's NATO summit and finish planning for the mass protests they will stage during the meetings of world leaders.
Today's gathering is the first day of a two-day "People's Summit" organized by Occupy Chicago and billed as an alternative to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's May 20-21 summit at McCormick Place.
- Although the room where various people spoke this morning was mostly full, it was clear that the event's organizers expected more people to attend. Other rooms streaming a live video feed of the speeches and filled with hundreds of chairs for overflow crowds were either empty or had only a handful of spectators.
Frankly, we think they don't want to be associated with anything that mutant Andy Thayer is the face of.

Funny, how most news articles have an estimate of people in attendance, BUT this article doesn't include an estimate-- just a vague statement that "the room" was mostly full...
room: 10x10 room, with what? 15-20 people? :)
Media doesn't want to estimate the size of the group because they could probably count the people on both hands
Funny how they pick and choose.
Instead of showing the crowded rooms they carefully take a picture in one that's has two people in it.
They talk about live video streams but ignore the number of people that checked into those streams.
While no-one really knows what the turnout will be the main event isn't until next weekend and you have to figure most of the protestors that are coming won't be here until the last minute.
Kind-a dove tails nicely with the go about your business and come on downtown speeches, everything is open for business right?
Not surprised. I never thought this event would be nothing more than a large protest. Much ado about nothing. But still good to be prepared just in case. I'm prepared.

all of these people want to protest but the reality sinks in that they are going to have to deal with the mighty chicago police department--- getting arrested and getting a little trimming is not very appealing to some of these eggheads---
It's taking on the dimmensions of a fizzle, rather than a boom. Andy...u r the problem! Somehow he'll turn this around into 'people are afraid to come to Chicago because of the police.' If he does, than I thank the coppers from '68 for still kicking ass. Bless you oldtimers...and thanks!
I agree! Even the most serious protesters probably don't want to be anywhere near that goof. He's an embarassment to anyone's protest/cause. What a fool he is. He's very hard on the eyes and ears.
This is pretty early yet. Protesters can still stream in en masse before the 19th.
Although a lot of these protesters are lazy fucks, so maybe it's just too much of a hassle to get to Chicago and find a place to stay.
Some rumors going around that they are camped out in the forest preserves along the Des Plaines river.
Andy is one of those people, like little luis guttierez, that you just want to pimp slap into the next state. I grind my teeth every time that I see either one of them on the news.

Thayer and his cohorts have been bought off by the city....the Chicago way..NATO fears are overblown. Some protests, a few crazies but nothing massive like some are predicting. Do you really think Rahm would risk his city?
Occupy is over. These lazy, good for nothing kids and hippie 'want to be's' don't have the ethics or stamina to continue. Too much work.

Our local protestors led by Andy Thayer are all pussies and a joke.. Lots of noise no action. Wait and see if the European Anatchists show up and really start the shit flowing. Like all true Anarchists they will use the mostly just loud and non violeny locals led ny Andy as camoflage to throw they stuff, break glass assault police etc. Then they will disappear into the crowd and the police will answer with the appropriate response. Some of our local ass holes will be arrested and ANdy,s backers the Peoples Law Office will have the entire thing on film so they can win in the eventual law suits. I have been around Thayer in all these Demos in the past years and hes loud and ignorant thats about all.
A few months back in 001 alot of these dopes weren't real happy about getting locked up a second time, having their bonds revoked, then enjoying a nice "sit" at county. Although the numbers will be there, most will rethink the voluntary protest arrest this time.
It's really gonna be anarchist dopes intermixed that will make it interesting.

There was another "diminishing expectations" story like this a couple of weeks ago, right around May Day.
They put out a big "GENERAL STRIKE!" "tweet" in NYC, and maybe a dozen people showed up who had nothing to do anyway. Them, and a few pigeons.
Hey! Remember the "Freaknic," or "Woodfest Freakthing," or whatever "rap festival" it was that they were going to have in Maywood?" Was it last summer or the one before?
The promoters were renting off-site parking and leasing shuttle buses, CCSD and suburban departments were cancelling time off and reviewing emergency plans, etc.

In all seriousness, many potential protestors from out of state have noticed that there is a war going on in Chicago fueled by gangs, drugs, and mobs. More shootings have occurred in Chicago this year than in Afghanistan. Chicago is not safe for anyone including police, citizenry, and protestor and protestors appear to have noticed this. Why take a chance comming to this shithole, especially when lacking room and board?
When this does turn out to be a non event, you an rest assured that Mr. "every crisis is a positive" Emmanuel will take credit for the preparedness of CPD and that "junior bloggers" caused much concern for naught.

The picture at the head of this story clearly shows about 50 people. The story says about 200 total.

NATO protesters are terrifying me. I am hitting the medical.
My hubby said the MSM is going to show footage of the last few NATO protest this week.. first thing all you who think this is NOT going to be a BIG F-nd Deal.. here's a few things you don't understand you aren't working with just those that protest for a reason.. you will be working for PAID protesters.. check out places like CRAIG'S list they are paying $9 to %10 an hour for protesters..on college dorm boards.. do be so assured that these so call fronts for training protesters are what is the total sum of them.. there are those in HIGH places who have praised them bet your bottom dollar UNLESS those people call the protesters off it will be a cluster ****

If one wants to create a media spectical then 4228 N Hermitage (Rahm mmanuels house) would be the place to gather a protest. A concentrated force of protestors would surely disrupt "the racoons" political NATO exploits and bring attention to his speed camera bullshit and pension reform slavery. The 019 district as well as the Cpd is severely inderstaffed to a dangerous level and this action would make RAHM look like the corrupt asshole he is. OH..I get it..it was just to create the appearance of telling the troops what was going on while still being able to say 'I never said that.' This must be the lawyerly approach to leadership. I'm sure none of the exempts will bring this up in the Big Room, but the talk down here is how little faith we have in any of whats being done at 35th street. The records software should not even allow that. No backwards step, no deletions. You should only be able to append changes, corrections, outright lies -- add them on the current date.
