Use Your Vacation Time
A sharp eyed reader pointed out this amusing article in the Tribune from Monday:
- Good news, everyone. I'm ordering you to go on vacation.
I know, I know, you're not sure if this is the right time. Things are busy at work. You might not take any time off this year because of the economy. You want to impress the bosses with how hard you work.
Shut up and take some time off!
According to a survey conducted at the end of last year by the workforce consulting firm Right Management, about 70 percent of U.S. workers say they didn't use all their vacation time in 2011.
As a time-off enthusiast, that baffles me. I understand the worries some have about the fragility of the job market, but if you're lucky enough to have a job that gives you paid vacation, that time belongs to you.
Someone want to forward this one to McPlymouthRock and the command staff as they continue to screw each and every cop who asks for a day off here and there while burning out every single one of us with their nonsense and BS number games?
Remember, we earned that time due. We earned it by staying late, attending court, missing family stuff, all for the citizens of Chicago and in the service of the law. The unreasonableness of the current regime is going to bite them in the ass, if it isn't already.

ah yes. Compstat
We're having the same issues as well when we have PTO and now we're being denied it...... I have never felt so burned out and my co-workers are feeling the same way as well. By the way one of them is a former cpd 911 dispatcher and she's feeling he same way as well
If you feel burnt out or "exhausted" kinda like a U. S. Rep. just throw your self on the floor in front of the desk, roll on your side and run in a clockwise pattern, you know like Moe or Curley and plea Nolo Contendre.
I've seen quite a few colleagues in the private sector that thought that they had a gentleman's agreement with their boss -- that they could carry their vacation time over from one year to the next.
They got burned when that boss either A) lost his position and was replaced. or B) reneged on that agreement when the pressure to do more with less just kept on increasing.
To compete with China we must have slave labor like China. That's where we're at. Ross Perot was right.
OT: A new name for our fluffy bearded super...McColonial!
Also remember that the law requires us be paid out if and when we leave before we use that time.
Put all the special teams back in the assigned districts from the areas and units. The beat officer can take a day off if there were more bodies, and less back logs.
Uh, time due is useless. Its only good for an extra retirement check.
yea and i love the po's that have 800 hrs on the books, never take time due and when they retire and croak right away who gets to enjoy all that moola?? enjoy your time now who knows what tmrw will bring!!
that is bs!!! if one were to accumulate overtime that would be considered earned. it'd make no sense that one could not use that overtime to take a day off. we are being restricted because rahm doesn't want to hire more police and put us at full power like we need to be? way to go rahm, you continue to amaze and prove everyday you don't care about the working class/city workers who deserve what is owed to them per contract. you have no conscience or soul and these terrible ways of yours will backfire and continue to show your political stock fall and sink.
Scrooge will save all his time due and not take a single personal or baby furlo day so he could cash in on that time due when he retires. In the meantime, he will bitch about not getting time due (which he never put in for) so he doesn't stand out among his peers. But, for most of us, a benefit of this job is to take time off to attend family events --- dancing recitals, all-star baseball team game, scouts, birthdays, weddings, etc. It is what makes many aspects of this job tolerable, and helps keep us sane. If that is not available to us any longer, I can foresee stress related incidents in the near future. With the heat, the BS, the 2-legged animals, and no time due being given, it won't be pretty - it will be postal. So, I suggest you use your time off wisely. Do things to feed your soul and your heart. Count your blessings and love those close to you. Help your fellow officer out when they show signs of frustration. When all is said and done, we only have each other.
theres one american i know used vacation time, and on our dime. potus and wife have been having a good time. in the mean time his home town is considered more dangerous than iraq or afghanistan. is it possible he dont know or care. you have to wonder since they had alot of security at v jarrett wedding. find ten honest men and we can save the city.
The author of the referenced article misses the point.
Who do you think got stuck doing all the work when everybody else got laid off?
There's a reason the US has among the highest worker productivity numbers in the world.
We're all doing three jobs!
TEN-HOUR DAY! Bring it to the districts.....nuff said.
