What If We Say "Pretty Please?"
It's like they're reading from a script - a script we wrote with the assistance of our readers two or three years ago:
- Chicago's extensive efforts to reinvigorate its convention and tourism industries could be damaged unless the city quickly defuses the violent crime wave that has exploded in its neighborhoods and nicked the downtown, the city's top convention and tourism official said Wednesday.
"We hope this sunsets quickly because all the good work we're doing regionally, nationally and internationally, if this is not contained in a reasonable period of time, it will have an impact," Don Welsh, president and chief executive officer of Choose Chicago, said in a morning meeting with the Chicago Tribune's editorial board.
News reports of several unprovoked attacks by youths in the Michigan Avenue corridor and of the surge in murders in some impoverished Chicago neighborhoods are triggering concerned calls to Choose Chicago, the newly restructured not-for-profit agency that combines the city's convention bureau and its office of tourism and culture. The issue has gained national attention in the New York Times and other media.
Rumor has it a lid is going to be thrown on the Taste this year. No one gets shot or else.

I personally know of a family from Michigan (family friends) that decided not to come & shop in Chicago this year because they heard of the wild mobs robbing people downtown. how many more out there like this are there???
I think we need to stop electing/ hiring sawed off little ego maniacs to run our city. These "little people " let their Napoleon complex cloud their judgement.
Shortshanks, Rahm and now Garry... Lay'em end to end and you got about 15 and 1/2 feet of pure jagoff.
A lid ? Ha ha ha !
What, is some asshole politition gonna tell the community to knock it off ?
There is nothing WE can do about it and THEY know it.
Effective police work is ugly and untill every decent citizen is willing to turn their head and turn off their camera nothing can happen.
"...News reports of several unprovoked attacks by youths in the Michigan Avenue corridor..."
several?
There have been dozens of viscious attacks by mobs of ghetto youths for almost four years now. The very day this started was the same day Obama was declared President and they started coming downtown to hunt down white, hispanic and asian individuals and couples on dates. They knocked them down onto the ground, kicking them in the head, bragging about being the ones in power.
Wake up Don Welsh. If you don't get real about exactly how many and how long mob attacks have been occurring here, you will not solve the problem, you will be part of it just like our feeble mayor and his puppet police superintendent.

Hey, if our convention rates dont kill ya, our shit-heads will.
Crime and poverty is big business, good luck electing a politician who really wants to end it.

A lot. People in the suburbs are talking about it. The parking rates, crime, traffic cameras, nobody wants to go into the City anymore. It's like it's own little country with its own set of rules. People are saying fuck it.
And you know if people in other states are talking about it, the problem is widely known and out there.
Shut down the red line after 7pm. problem solved.
From news pictures on channel 7 it appeared that there were more police than customers at the Taste.

Take that one step further. Take Mikey shields and his little dog McCarthy too. Hell, take any of them. Just vote them the fuck out.
How about punishing these pieces of shit that we arrest on a daily basis and actually sentencing them to do some jail time. They're costing us tax dollars either way. I'd rather they cost us tax dollars sitting in jail and prison.
perception is reality, chicago has a gang problem. the mayor can dance all around the truth but it is now perceived as a dangerous place to visit. the gang bangers know it well that he does not have power or will to stop them. they had a big laugh when he gave cease fire 1 m. and g-mac says dont stop and frisk lol. also dont go looking for illegals. slap on the wrist for possession. his crowd dont care they have their body guards.
What a great marketing tool.
Welcome to wonderful Mogadishu-On-Lake Michigan!
Just like the REAL Mogadishu except we still serve pork and in Somalia you can carry a gun to protect yourself.
How long has the Michigan Ave thuggery been going on and only recently it's been getting out to the rest of the city & nation that Red Line teens infested downtown???
They closed the lakefront because of the the crime...but it's still safe here?
Who told Walsh to back back with the statement?
Shanks or Rahmf ?
Walsh even paraphrased GMac, " crime is down overall".
What a crock.
Time to get out while you can. Your property values are going down every day. If you belive they are going to rebound you are a fool. Chicago is no longer safe anywhere. Once the tourism is gone then the city is also.
knock it off , stay away from the children , 96% of victims are black & hispanic .
betcha that 1% asian and 3% whites
had a few black and hispanic offenders
now tribune post numbers of agg battery victims by race and offenders , all the hate crimes on mag mile , lake front
agg battery victims white , asian offenders black
It has been \MORE than 20 since the media in Chicago bothered to report the REAL attacks and murders in Chicago.. having lived in the BRIDGEPORT area when they were burning bodies in garbage cans.. a counselor from one of the kids clubs on 32nd and Aberdeen who was beat to death with a golf club.. it hit the news ONCE and was hushed up.. That is what gave these gangs the balls to do what they are doing now.. it's been building up through the years KNOWING the media would cover it up and the higher ups in the CPD would COVER it up..and that was NOT even DOWNTOWN.. where the residents have been scared to be after dark for a LONG time.. That is why people fled the city and DON'T even return to shop downtown.. Even resident KNOW the higher ups are nothing but LIARS..maybe it's time the media picked up on the TRUTH for once..

Nothing special in the article, very chicago-politically correct. I don't see anything that would expose the real problems with policing in this city.
Don thanks for looking outside your limo, please run for mayor! Its been messing with your business, like the mob. don't mess with my money or else
P.S. Don't go downtown, stay off the red, blue, green, orange, purple, pink CTA lines too. oh and buy your coin machine city sticker, did I mention mark up is 30% down there. if your getting a hotel enjoy a state and city tax. bring your own water were taxing that too. the view of the skyline is much nicer from wisconsin.
Enjoy our world class city AT YOUR OWN RISK.
If your city won't let me carry, I won't come.

Less conventions = less money
Less money = higher taxation
Higher taxation = less income for the taxpayer
Less income for the taxpayer = idiot taxpayer
Keep voting democrat idiot....... HAH !
Been reading this blog for the past few weeks. Was offered a job in Chicago (in a high-rise on the Magnificent Mile, right across from the Water Tower) and came across this blog while doing research on crime. Trying to do my best to make an informed decision.
I wanted to move to Chicago really badly. I was so excited. Guys, y'all have a truly beautiful city. Living in Lincoln Park, taking the train to work downtown - life in the big city. But based on what I was reading in the news (or not reading, depending on your perspective), working late would be a risky proposition - since there were mob beatings just blocks away from where my office would be.
Couldn't walk the dog early in the morning in my neighborhood. Staying late at the office would have been inherently risky. It's sad. I wanted to make it happen, but there's no way I'm exposing my girlfriend (and out-of-town visitors... my parents) to that kind of risk. When there's THAT much crime, and I can't defend myself, then that constitutes a loss of liberty. I'm not trading my liberty for a job, even if it is in an amazing city like Chicago.
So, in light of the crime and the risk, I took a similar gig in Austin for slightly less pay. Austin will be great. But, yeah... the point of all of this is that businesses will have trouble attracting out of town talent if this crime thing can't be brought under control. Tourism suffers. Everyone suffers. I hope y'all can put a lid on it. I really do.
No one gets shot or else.
You hear that dude!!! Be good or you get obliterated. Please.
"We are actively working to implement strategies to continue to lower this number," Sarah Hamilton, the mayor's spokeswoman, said. "More and more people are coming to Chicago. … They understand that these incidents are isolated to gangs, and visitors are not at risk."
Really? Visitors are not at risk? That is an outright lie. Not only are visitors at risk, so are doctors from Northwestern, passengers on public transportation and citizens on bike paths and beaches.
Oh, but it's too hot near the cool water at the beach. And crime is down. Really, it is. Believe us. Because we just paid one million dollars to gang members to interrupt violence while we screw cops out of pay and pension.
Start sending stories about the violence to newspapers and TV News stations around the world. As the news spreads there will be pressure from the business, tourism and importantly the insurance and financial industry for Rahm to break down and finally hire more cops.
One thing I worry about is that Rahm will let this become a crisis he can take advantage of. Let us go down to nothing and then hire all new cops at minimum wage and next to nothing benefits.
Send the information to the convention bureaus of competing cities, like Las Vegas, Miami and everywhere else. Let them spread the news about the downtown wildings to their potential clients and snag the trade shows.
Hey, Rahm,
What happened to The HOUSEWARES SHOW?
...The CONSUMER ELECTRONICS SHOW?
...The ( fill-in-the-blank ) SHOW?
"...the violent crime wave that has exploded in its neighborhoods and nicked the downtown..."
"NICKED?" Is that what you call wildings, waves of mass shoplifting, gangs of paroled thugs bursting out of limousines and beating people on the street, literally thousands of shirtless troublemakers pouring out of the Red Line stops?
Is that what you call gang fights on the North Avenue Beach at 7:30 AM?
Is that what you call visitors from Ireland beaten so terribly that they are still slumped in wheelchairs two years later, unable to care for themselves, unable to have any sort of normal life ever again?
"We hope this sunsets quickly..."
SUNSETS?
What the FUCK kind of movie do you think you're watching here?
Needs to get out of the the house more, needs to get out of that cocktail lounge on the 95th.
Guy sure needs something. Like maybe to get his head down out of his ass.
What a miserable little worm.

Why would he get in trouble? Do you think that reporter just jumped into the squad car without TPTB knowing about it? We all know Sgt. L was given a script he had to follow, under the penalty of death. That's the Chicago way.
Angarone only cares about Michigan Ave, and doesnt give a shit about the other Beats.
"Rumor has it a lid is going to be thrown on the Taste this year. No one gets shot or else."
I am doing everything I can to help by staying away and not spending a penny. You can get that food anywhere. Who wants to stand in the hot sun, over 90 degrees again, juggling some little plastic thing of grease, and then stop off in a 160-degree Port-A-Pot? THEN you have to try to make it home in one piece.
The city is SO scared. No Grant Park fireworks -- and still there was a panic on Navy Pier -- now cutting the Taste in half and scooping everyone out at 9, barely dark, nothing to see here, move along. I hope we're on the path to eliminating all of these expensive, non-productive events.
It's the only way to go if you refuse to conduct mass arrests for mob action, etc. Control the controllable people and hope that the uncontrollable ones kind of, well, go away, sort of.
The Culture Of Death has become so ubiquitous that the lead act on the Taste stage comes from a yellow-taped murder house in Englewood. What is there to say -- except don't expect everyone to consider mindless killing as just another part of the day. It is an ominous shadow, a pathological inversion of the family model, and many people are just not comfortable with this. That's OK.
At least 30% unsold seats for all the Taste shows, I understand.
I wlll go down to the electric fish barrier and get my own Asian Carp On A Stick, thank you.
In other news -- everyone seen the property tax increases yet? One poor young guy on TV showed a bill where his installment rocketed $1,500, and you know he just had some little place, probably hooked in by the easy-mortgage game and then went underwater when his ARM soared and his property value plummeted.
Tear down a few empty buildings for the cameras while inviting more and more illegals into the city, that's a safe strategy.
The 018th and 001 district get about 2000 strong arm Robberies a year and 6000 reports for Pickpocketing,at any given time their are hundreds of Predators Downtown, waiting to take your property.Beat Cop at 018 says.
One of the WGN radio talk show host was boasting the "KEEP SHOPPING EVERYONE" line the other day.
Oh it's so safe down here, what are they talking about..I walk here and I walk there..etc..etc..
Then, the very next call a women that lives is Streeterville gets on the horn and says something to the effect " hey come on down on the weekends and late at nite --- our building has added extra security this year to keep the mobs moving and from gathering in front of our building.."
As she tried to go on with some personal experiences that she's had recently and because it did not seem to fit the "Choose Chicago" script guess what happened? That's right. We are out of time. I gotta move on.
Every time a call doesn't support the agenda these call-in talk shows are "out of time" or their state of the art billion dollar phone systems "lose the call" ever notice that? It's oh crap, disconnect the call and throw up a commercial real quick. By the time you come out of the commercial 99% of the audience doesn't remember what they were talking about and the conversation can return to the next scripted caller.
Anyways, the Streeterville caller was funny and put the host in his place damn quick.
We got mobbing all over down here after the sun goes down and your shift is over. Come on back you'll see.
What we need is more illegal immigrants in this city. When it comes to crime they know how to keep their mouths shut plain and simple.
If we can flood the city with more of them they not only attract the crime but they keep their mouths shut and do not report it thereby creating undeclared zones of impunity for the criminals to operate in.
When it comes time to report the violent crimes call averages per. 1,000 residents OH LOOKIE there. See how safe we are?
Ahhh who cares if it's a double edge sword and if you cannot or will not call the police for your protection and decide to join a gang instead. Look how good it makes the numbers look....for awhile...like until the shootings start outside the zones. It just means that we need to bring in more illegal immigrants to get the number of crimes per hundred residents down that's all. Come on in.
Face it city is done we will be lucky if feds take care of our pension 30 cents on the dollar
Come to Chicago and pay more in taxes, fines and fees while being robbed by groups of young African American entrepreneurs. If they don't clip you, our red light and speeding cameras will.
Brought to you courtesy of the Chicago Democratic Machine. Ruining the city for nearly one hundred years.
"News reports of several unprovoked attacks by youths in the Michigan Avenue corridor and of the surge in murders in some impoverished Chicago neighborhoods are triggering concerned calls to Choose Chicago..."
Why? Choose Chicago can't fix this any more than CeaseFire can.
Status quo, bangbangbang, for the foreseeable future. This is what the city wants, no matter what it claims.
At the very best, a fully-manned police department allowed to do its job properly -- which we do not have -- could help clear out some of the vastly expensive illegals and put away some of the worst repeat offenders, but would pretty much still be chasing the radio from day to day.
Snce Rahm Emanuel's overall vision of the kind of society we should live in is more valid than anyone else's, I guess we're stuck in the descending spiral.
He'll be "not in the public view," up at Eagle River or someplace, when things get too hot here -- literally and figuratively.
Introducing Jennifer Hudson at the Taste didn't count for one whole hell of a lot.
Abandoned buildings don't commit crimes.
Nice try, though.
"Urban prairie" -- Detroit, here we come. It's just a matter of degree.
Start turning off street lighting next, and don't answer half the calls to police. "Broken Windows," sweat the small stuff, right?
I'm confused.
Chicago Gone...
Heard the judge in Juve court is a goof. She treats these teenage thugs like they are 5 year olds.
"Choose Chicago, the newly restructured not-for-profit agency that combines the city's convention bureau and its office of tourism and culture."
What kind of weird dodge is this?
can you imagine the response if a group of white yutes attack some blacks? rahm would be on the tv, promising to bring the evil doers to justice. he is hesitant to crack down on the misfits, after all the election is near. so smoke a joint, be illegal, potus has your back.
This is the way liberals think. They believe in the crap that Northwestern put out after the doctor got beaten. Don't make eye contact and give up your property when confronted. They have been pussified beyond hope. Then the "tough guy" like Rahm stabs furniture and thinks he's a bad ass, but he's just a bitch little ballerina with a big mouth and nothing to back it up when push comes to shove. These are your leaders because you vote for the Machine. A ballerina or a mood disorder thief who can't take the heat when it comes down.
When are you cops going to stand up for the rest of us? I have been broken into, gun pulled on me (2 seperate incidents) and I'm supposed to what? Beg for my life? By the way, most cops agree with you about "good citizens" arming themselves against thugs and criminals.

Welcome to Austin!
You definitely made the right choice. I lived in Chicago for 30 years and it is no longer the fun, affordable, and reasonably safe place it used to be. That slightly less pay will go a lot farther here too.
