- Facing criticism from parents worried about their children traveling through dangerous neighborhoods to new schools, Mayor Rahm Emanuel staked out a get-tough stance Wednesday proposing stiffer penalties for gun crimes near schools.
Whether the threat of fines and jail time for carrying guns near schools or designated school routes will cause gang members to reflect on whether they should carry weapons in those areas is unclear, however. In addition, state laws already allow prosecutors to push for considerably more time behind bars than called for under Emanuel's plan for people who break gun laws near schools.
- The ordinance, which was introduced at the City Council meeting, would raise penalties for certain gun offenses near schools to $1,000 to $5,000 and 30 days in jail for a first offense, $5,000 to $15,000 and 90 days to six months in jail for a second offense, and $10,000 to $20,000 and at least six months in jail for a third offense.
Can anyone, police, court worker, reporter, whomever, tell us if they have ever seen one of these fines levied against any gangbanger convicted any gun crime? For the most part, they end up with public defenders, so they have no money to speak of - how is this doubling of fines never levied going to deter anything?

Isn't carrying a gun on the public way (as of this moment) a felony punishable by a minimum of 1 year in prison?

Like "within 1000 feet of a school or place of worship" ordinance.
So if a kid gets picked up by a school bus across the street from my house, or walks to school at the end of my block there is some new restriction.

It is “unclear” if this will make the criminals think twice? It is unclear to who I wonder? It might be unclear to an irrational liberal but to the rest of us it is very clear that “gun free school zones” are murder zones where criminals can operate without fear of opposition.

No money to speak of? I guess you are correct in a way. No reportable income so they don't speak of the illegal dope money they make when filling out the declaration of income form required before getting a court appointed public defender. Never mind the fact that they have 5000 dollar stereo systems, 2-10,000 dollars worth of rims, several pairs of 200 dollar gym shoes. Yup, no income to speak of.
Take away the government freebies, LINK< SSI, etc. Once they engage in criminal activity and partake in the judicial system, they are no eligible for free stuff.
This is simply another law engineered to intimidate the otherwise law-abiding citizen.
As long as government money, S.S.I., Link, Social Security, T.A.N.F., is not garnishable these folks fear no fine much less jail, time to stop the free money when you or your children screw up.

This is a joke. Safety School Zones don't work because the Cook County Asa's and Judges don't care about the enhancement. They almost always drop it, thus - this is a joke. Just another way Rahm trying to look like a saint or to the fool the sheep that he's doing everything possible to combat the out of control crime in Chiraq.

Current "safe zones" cover 95% of the City, and don't have any effect on gun crimes, so why would anyone believe that doubling up on "safe zones" will work better. Just more political smoke and mirrors to befuddle exasperated citizens of Chicago.
Rahm is the epitome of evil,nothing more nothing less. People,Places or Things don't matter to him it's all just collateral damage in his quest for power.
It's not going to deter anything, but it makes the Mayor look like he cares and is doing something.
Also, isn't Rham laying off some CPS security officers and hiring people off the street to create these safe zones.
I wonder who gets the:
