HQ To Be Temporary Relocated
There is a proposal that the building at 35th and Michigan be vacated for a time while a complete structural overhaul is undertaken to make sure that the entire thing doesn't collapse under it's own weight and inept construction. Niles, Illinois has generously agreed to provide temporary residence to the occupants:

I wonder if the X/O of mass transit knows what 704 is doing behind your back. Rumor is someone in 704 used a car for personal use and when caught by Lt.C and Sgt.P all they did was dump him to the watch on 701.. I want to get in unit 704 so when I do something wrong I won't have to worry about getting in trouble .

Before the hdq was occupied we toured the building and noticed that the floors seemed tilted. Found out the the floors were poured to warehouse specifications. When the furniture arrived they had to spend extra money to install levelers on all of the desks. Also, the parking lot was originally designed to be two levels. They cut it down to one to save money, resulting in the lack of parking for workers and visitors. The sad thing is that nothing will change.
To 2am I don't work VRI and i never will but god forbid they actually expect you to do something while your working or making time and a half, typical dog.

And they should. I never worked VRI or any other overtime, but if you want to make time and a half you should be doing something other than sitting in the car sleeping or playing on your phone. You probably have the same work ethic during your regular tour. Maybe if you dumb asses didn't sit here on a public blog bragging about making big money in overtime for sleeping this wouldn't be an issue. But like everything else you open your big mouths and fuck it up for everyone. And no I'm not the supe, a boss or a company man. Just your average P.O. who observed you fucking this sweet overtime deal up yourselves.

Actually what I heard was that the original building was supposed to be 6 floors and the parking lot 2. But AFTER the land was purchased it was learned that the ground would not support that much weight.
Funny how those things happen.

They set up sham corporations that dissolve after the last payout check to cover their ass for just this type of thing. You will have to go file FOIA requests to find out the particulars but those are frequently "lost." With Rahm's "transparency" they stall until all the documents asked for are shredded and give you what is left and declare that they turned over all they had.
The construction manager I can provide. It was former Chicago Police Commander, former Fleet Management Director, former 911 construction manager, former CPD officer detailed to CC States Attorney Ed Hanrahan's office (Dec 69) William Corbett.
Now retired from all that. His connections to Daley got him all those jobs. He had little or none experience in building police headquarters but he is the guy who ran that job. He did a crappy job at the 911 center too. As a reward for doing that shitty job, they gave him CPD HQ to run. South Side Irish, of course.

I have no problem getting activity while working VRI, but for the last year all they touted was to be in your box and to have visibility. My box is 1 by 2 blocks, am I supposed to sand bag someone if nothing is going on. Don't say it is our fault for not getting activity, that is what they told us..no bullshit TVB's or arrests... STAY IN THE BOX..THAT IS WHAT WAS STRESSED..If they play the activity game everyone will come in with TVB's and arrests..No one in the box...

It is well known that Rick Simon is a friend of the Supe and it was reported in the Sun-Times article about Rick Simon and his mob ties (http://www.suntimes.com/news/transportation/16958878-418/king-of-the-janitors-richard-simon-mixes-with-top-cops-and-reputed-mobsters.html). I still don't understand how Rick Simon avoided a grand jury subpoena regarding the disappearance of Karen Koppel. I thought with a grand jury subpoena you are "compelled" to testify and can't get out of it unless you plead the 5th at the hearing. This would be a good "cold case" to look at.
Regarding the Supe, it looks like he likes the bright lights and bigwigs and the connections. This must be a New York thing. That is how former NYPD Commisioner Bernard Kerik got convicted. He was seduced by the power, the money and the connections. Maybe the same will happen to McCarthy....You never know!

You are correct about the number of floors for both the HQ building and HQ parking garage. It was published in a newspaper article way back then, but you are incorrect about the levelers on the desks. All of the office furniture purchased for the HQ already had adjustable levelers as standard equipment. If you do not believe it, try and find a piece of modular office equipment without levelers. It just so happened they had a handy fix for the uneven floors.

Bullshit. Maybe he studied that in school, not sure, but he was on the job by 1969 and already detailed to the States Attorney's Office So how old was he when he came on CPD? 20 in the academy and 21 by time he hit the street was very common then. Not far off I'd bet.
Thirty years of police department experience later and he is construction manager at 911/HQ. So how many large buildings did he build during those thirty years on the police department? You know, with all that civil engineer training and education. In between trials and lawsuits that came out of the Black Panther raid and then studying for Sgt, Lt and such stuff.
Simple arithmetic seems to dictate that he didn't have a very long career, if any, as a civil engineer after college and before the police department.
Do you really think he kept up on construction materials and techniques between what, the mid to late 1960's and the mid to late 1990's when 911 and CPDHQ were built? He had a police career in between. Clout rules, a 30 year old undergrad engineering degree would cover the lack of a lifetime of actual construction experience.
The prima facie evidence of "Built by Shoddy" is on public display in the terrible state of the 3510 S Michigan building less than twenty years after completion.

Did he skip that part of civil engineer school where they teach that your building is not supposed to fall down? That class that teaches that floors have to be level, the walls plumb, the concrete up to strength and that when pouring foundations on unstable ground you need to dig caissons down deep enough to support the structure for a couple of hundred years?
I point out the John Hancock Center as an example of how to do it right, albeit after some early miscues. They also had "educated and trained civil engineers." That building was not built on swamp, where that stands was IN THE LAKE a hundred years before construction. Then it became landfill as it was filled in with garbage, Chicago Fire debris and such.
the foundation of the building (John Hancock) is basically traditional. Footings are set on 239 caissons with a maximum diameter of 10 feet; 57 of them go down almost 200 feet to bedrock, and 182 go into hardpan at a maximum depth of 88 feet.
Needless to say, 3510 S Michigan was not built to such standards. Not a ringing endorsement that Corbett was civil engineer on CPD HQ. If true, he was a dismal failure. The building is junk.
