Proposal to Reduce Aldrecreatures

We can't claim credit for the idea, but as far as we know, we're the only ones who made an actual effort to do anything about it:
  • A pair of independent Chicago aldermen are resurrecting a politically-volatile idea to save millions and set the tone for the belt-tightening that lies ahead by cutting the nation’s second-largest City Council in half.

As mayor-elect, Rahm Emanuel broached the subject of going from 50 to 25 aldermen, only to choose the political path of least resistance — by eliminating three of the Council’s 19 standing committees and cutting Council spending by 20 percent.

Now, Aldermen Brendan Reilly (42nd) and Ameya Pawar (47th) are revisiting the idea to begin to chip away at the city’s $338.7 million shortfall and perhaps turn a City Council that’s even more of a rubber stamp for Emanuel than it was for his predecessor into a more deliberative body.

The aldercreatures probably aren't going to vote to cut their own numbers, so the only serious effort is going to come from a referendum, proposed either by the involved aldercreatures or a citizen. The research we did four years ago is located here, but in a nutshell, you have to gather signatures totaling 11% of the previous vote total of the mayoral election.

On short notice, we were able to gather just over 11,000 signatures out of a required 122,000. That's how apathetic Chicago voters are. And you're going to need double that to confront challenges from the Machine.

We'll see how serious these guys are in the coming days - we're betting not very.

Based on the per capita representations on city councils in the eight most populous cities in the nation, Chicago excluded, Chicago should have no more that seventeen (17) aldermen/wards.

We also desperately need term limits and a mechanism for recall referendum initiatives for all elected officials. Obviously, the City Council would never cut their own corrupt, greedy throats. It's "the Chicago Way."

Due to the nature of the vile beast aka the Democratic machine, they would never support the retroactive elimination of the "gold braid" bill. Patronage [GIVEN NOT EARNED] is their life blood in this most corrupt of all major U.S. cities.

The City Council can only be cut during Citywide redistricting and it was another, truly independent, alderman's idea first.

Anyone who thinks Pewar and Reilly are "independent" probably believes the two party system is alive and well in Chicago. Both are Rahm Emanuel rubber stamp shills.

Useless.

I live in 47 and Pewar has proven himself to be exactly what he campaigned against when first elected. His next new idea will be his first.

Pawar is independent? LOL! He is about as independent as Himmler was in Germany circa 1940. Wasn't this an Emanuel plan originally?

After being called out for missing 80% of Council Committee meetings he explained that his presence is not necessary because he is dealing with constituent services in his ward. Has he changed his mind about the importance of constituent services?

Here's an idea to save some money: cut aldermanic salaries to $60K as Pawar volunteered to do when campaigning. Unfortunately, Pawar is drawing a full salary.

Just A Citizen, you don't know what you're talking about. You make it seem like Pawar backed down on his proposal to draw less than a full salary. The city council FORCED Pawar to draw a full salary. It is the law that he take that full salary. He did not back down, he just had to follow the law. As a constituent in the 47th Ward, Pawar is a breath of fresh air that has voted against the mayor on many issues.

Be careful what you ask for. So let's say we go from 50 alderman down to half. Well that would mean it would be half as easy for the Machine or anyone else to buy off those 25 Alderman. Be careful what you wish for.

If you want real, authentic change then regular citizens should be running for alderman. Challenge the machine and career politicians directly. I live in Ameya Pawar's ward. I was impressed that this guy knocked on every single door and voted for him. He knocked off the hand picked Machine chosen candidate.

Dear Dumbshit:

Did you even read the first line of the post? "We can't claim credit for the idea..."

Isn't that in English? We're pretty sure it is, but the exact meaning must have escaped your tiny pea-brain. People have talked about reducing the number of aldercreatures for years, but no one has done shit about it.

If you read the embedded link halfway through, we show exactly what we did.

(1) Did you see the petition at the link? We created it. That's ours. We didn't download it - we made it based on examples and following the statute that would allow an actual referendum. No one else even took that simple first step.

(2) We posted it on a blog we happen to have. We pushed the issue and tried to rally the troops to take proactive action to better our situation and maybe rattle a few cages at City Hall.

(3) We got media coverage. If you go through the archives in the following days and weeks, Channel 2 did a piece on it along with a few other outlets.

(4) We personally got around 400 signatures of the resulting 11,000 signatures and accepted a retired Sergeant's offer to be the face of the petition drive and collect, collate and number the sheets.

So the question now becomes, what the fuck did you do to fight back and try to better the lives and positions of 17,000 active and retired police officers you ignorant asshat?

Obviously you chose to badmouth Pawar TWICE, but I don't quite know why. I can only assume you're a machine hack whose guy lost to Pawar in the last election, but here's my take:

The 47th Ward has ALWAYS been a machine controlled ward. I've lived here for 60 years and until Pawar won the last election, 47 has been run by TWO aldermen... Former Park's boss Ed Kelly and then by his underling, Gene Schulter. BOTH of them were completely obedient to the Daley Crime Family and would NEVER deviate one inch from what the machine ordered them to do.

Pawar is an absolute breath of fresh air compared to those other two ass-clowns! He is everywhere, from community meetings to block parties to fests and charitable events. You'd be lucky to see Schulter anywhere.

I believe Ald. Pawar has already stated that he plans to leave the city council after 1 or 2 terms (wouldn't it be nice to get rid of all these worthless goofs so easily?). Guess that's why he's willing to step up and sponsor a reduction in the size of the council.

Anyway, don't let the one guy typing on his laptop at 2 in the morning mislead anyone in to thinking Pawar is not a top shelf advocate for his constituents. Truth be told, he's waaay more liberal than I like, but if this guy decided to run for mayor, he'd be more INDEPENDENT than any Chicago mayor has been in my lifetime!

I would like to clarify two factors concerning Chicago's City Council and wards.

(1) Wards must be of equal population. There is no correlation between the populations of wards and CPD districts. Do you understand that 8:16 AM and 12:40 PM? Your proposal is impossible. The huge 8th Dist. alone would have to be divided into at least three of the seventeen wards. With nearly 250,000 residents, 008 alone would rank as the second largest city in Illinois.

(2) Some suggest that Chicago's wards be only cut in half to 25. Read the following post from SCC. Give the city an inch, they'll take a mile. ONLY SEVENTEEN (17) WARDS. PERIOD.

Click on CITY COUNCIL MEMBERSHIP FOR THE EIGHT MOST POPULOUS CITIES IN NATION

I absolutely concur with the 12:52 AM poster regarding our desperate need for term limits and a recall referendum initiative. Without these reforms, Chicago is doomed to the fate of Detroit. It's only a matter of time.

Are you nuts??? Having the alderman in the station and the ward with the same boundaries; asking for trouble. The alderman will be dictating where YOUR dumb ass will do foot patrol, what stop sign you will sit on, etc. This is one of the most stupid ideas on the blog. Each ward should contain parts of 4 districts. Then the alderman has 4 commanders to deal with. You obviously never had to deal with an alderman, or you are one of them.

I feel it would be easier to investigate them if they are already in the police station. Not far to go if you need to slap the cuffs on them also. And if they feel the need to go around to roll calls or the commander's office asking "Don't you know who I am?" Well, that can be accomplished easily enough.

You know, in case they have amnesia and forget who they are, someone can remind them: "Yes, it is a bad dream, you really are just a pimpshit alderman, now get the garbage collected you moron!"

It is easier for him to control 25 robots than 50.

If the counsel is cut in half each alderman will want more staff and twice the pay. Maybe there would have to be one or more Deputy Aldermen in each ward.

There will be no savings!

You will never get to contact your alderman directly because you now are only half as important as you were before if you voted al all.

And ward boundaries, if you think there was a fight last time wait till there is twice the booty to be had. The ward boundaries will be drawn to benefit the catered constituents not the working middle class who foot the bill.

Stay Safe and be careful what you wish for.
