30,000 Applicants?

  • The Chicago Police Department is looking for thousands more people seeking to become police recruits before the deadline for applications later this month.

About 20,000 people have applied to become police officers since the beginning of August, but Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said Friday at a news conference that "I'd love to get it up to about 30,000." The deadline is Monday, Sept. 16.

"This is a great opportunity … to make a difference in people's lives," McCarthy said.

Police spokesman Adam Collins later clarified the number of applicants, saying about 18,000 people have at least begun the application process, and said the 30,000 number is not a firm target.
This guy counts applications exactly the opposite way he counts robberies in Boystown and wildings downtown. And as a reader pointed out, it's ironic as hell that Ladner is encouraging officers to have their family members test when she is doing everything in her power to deny family members of police a job.

Why would anyone want to apply to work for this department when you have an asshole mayor who fucks over the men and women who risk their lives everyday by refusing to negotiate a fair contract in a timely manner

This is just like Rahm talking about his favorite corporations heading up that Choose Chicago bullshit.

Oh-oh, they just can't find qualified candidates. A line used to encourage kids to go into debt and take college classes because there's a shortage.

There's a shortage all right. But who ya gonna believe? That Gary is looking to hire 30,000 new cops or that no new cops are going to be hired because Rahm wants to cut the force by 10%!

Can you say PROPAGANDA? I thought you could.

The only way 30,000 new cops are going to hit the street is if 30,000 old cops retire or quit.

Why does he want so many? Does he just get a kick out of getting people's hopes up, only to deny them. What a cruel ass wipe.

He will never hire 17,000 of the 18,000 applicants. I can't wait for M.C. to get his walking papers.

When they are screened and given the lie detector test. Ask them if they are going to do some police work! Nothing but more jokes. How many are they really going to hire. More contracts for testing. Why not make it a million so someone can make lots of money with testing them. But to never hire more than one percent.

This is not a great opportunity to make a difference in peoples' lives. Don't believe a word from McCarthy or Emanuel.

The Chicago Police Department's management will treat you like shit.

When you are on probation for 18 months, you will spend about 10 months on FOOT patrol in shitty districts with little field training because you had to be in a car with and FTO and 2, 3 or 4 other ppos.

The only difference will be IN YOUR life as the department seeks more and more ways to fuck with you, while the mayor figures out ways not to pay you what you are due.

I will say this: if it the department was like this 20 years ago I never would have come on the job. I only see it getting worse for new police officers.

Thank goodness I am at the end of my career!!!

Wtf is wrong with using periods? I think 12 hour days is just too much for this job. For guys like me who are fortunate enough to have bid out of 005 and am in a somewhat normal district, it's do-able. But this would be too stressful for the guys in 007, 011, etc. 10 hour days would be perfect if there is any incentive to save the city money. We're already doing 9 hour days, what's another hour? Compared to another 3!

You're right, maybe Naperville can work with this schedule, but not Chicago.

I also think this is a young man's game. With our pension mess and the talk of raising the ages, there should be inside spots available for the guys pushing 55+ on this job. If they so choose to work inside. All these young guys and girls who work inside should be ashamed of yourselves. You clouted kiss ass mother fuckers. I'm doing my time on the street. And if the revolver guy had enough of chasing pookie then I can take his place and new hires need to fill our shoes like a revolving door. Seemed to work that way in the 70's through 90's until Daley and Rham took over.

The best candidates will go to other Departments because they have better benefits including higher pensions (80 to 90% of salary); retiree health care (CPD proposes none); a real COLA; and an earlier retirement age (new hires must stay until 55).

CPD has since lowered their hiring standards and will fill their ranks accordingly.

9/07/2013 05:44:00 AM

Here's how the Dept is looking at these numbers:
one quarter of those will not show up for the exam.
18000 - 4500 = 13500

one qaurter will not come close to actually a passing the exam (even tho it is nothing more than a common sense exam.
13500 - 3375 = 10125

one quarter will fail the physical, psych, polygraph, power test, etc.
10125 - 2531 = 7594

one quarter will fail to show up for any one part of the application process
7594 - 1898 = 5696

So, you may have approx. 5696 people that will actually qualify and want the job.
You keep that list up until exhausted.
Based on hiriing history of the past 7 years a percentage of that 5696 will also not want the job when the time comes for them because they have moved on to other careers after waiting so long to get called.

So now you can see why the city would like a higher number taking the written exam.

I recall taking the police exam in 1975.
There were over 75,000 applicants taking that exam.
It was held one the same day at CPS High Schools all over the city.

Those were the good ole days, when people who really needed a job came out for it. When there was no college requirement.
Just a bunch of kids with street smarts that were looking for that chance at a good job, with good benefits.

That's because the only thing they want is what they think is some bullshit political value of having 30K desperate children apply for a career in being fucked over, lied to and contractually violated at every turn. They think it makes them look cool.

Note to applicants: That "career path" McFuckstick yapped out? It ain't gonna be there kids. As soon as they can find a way to get rid of the top earners (because trying to make them quit by fucking them over ain't working), there'll be no more tests for years on end, just as there have been prior to this bullshit.

You want a career where the shitheel calling himself your employer constantly attempts to bankrupt you? You want a career where you're told this is what your hard work will get you over the next 20 years only to have that shitheel steal it from you year after year and then attempt to make permanent the theft of your compensation in retirement?

By all means, come join "the team".

You'll enjoy working your entire life for this shithole city and these pansyass shithole bosses, only to find all that you worked for and was protected by law was taken from you at the end, and given away to the same shitrats you had to fuck with for 20 years.

Well, them and the 1%er motherfuckers that want the majority of your pension too.... they'll get paid off first with your money.

In the past, experienced bosses would take care of older male and female officers until they retire. Right concept, wrong numbers.

Emanuel fully intends to take the number of sworn officers far below that. Try looking at a number right around 5000. See, one third of 5000 is all he thinks are required to police this city. That is, after he cons the public into agreeing to give up their police protection in favor of letting him put police only in the ghetto districts, and then hiring civilian wannabe's to patrol the rest of the "non violent" areas of the city.

Watch and learn..... these gangbanger motherfuckers like Kates and the rest of the scumbags working these bullshit security companies will be the only thing you will see in your nice clean neighborhood. You'll never see another actual COP again.

Mark those words, UNDER 5000 SWORN, PRIVATE SECURITY PAID FOR ON THE CITY TAXPAYER DIME TO "POLICE" THE REST OF THE CITY AND TAKE REPORTS.

THIS is the work in progress, privatization of the police department, and he's gonna sell it off to the stupid by making sure they see a fucking Kates or some other security car in their neighborhood.

And the ghetto slugs who DON'T pay taxes? They're gonna vote this bullshit up twice on Sunday because they're gonna get all the police in their shithole hoods.

Enjoy living in the nice areas folks... and enjoy the shithead gangbanger wannabe that shows up to "take care of you" when the next property crime occurs.

Make sure you don't let them in your house though, cause they'll be back later to home invade you for all you're worth. The benefit of hiring the honest ex-gangbanger and paying them garbage wages don't you know.

The good old bosses are gone and probably are never coming back as long as this liberal mayor continues to NOT put politics aside and hire a conservative not liberal superintendent who knows what it takes to run a police dept. The judicial part of the city system needs to be separate from the politics and not subjected to the father phlems and asshole reverends of the world. That being said I was able to talk to a lot of recruits on my new assignment to safe passage from 35th And really enjoyed talking to these guys. It brought me back to a time when I was full of pride and loved this job. I was careful not to rain on their parade/time now. There is a $30 application fee, per applicant. So wouldnt the City want as many applicants as possible? 30 x 30,000. They could just perpetually accept applications (with a fee) as an alternative revenue stream. The speed camera tickets start at $35, so this would be almost as lucrative.

I live downtown and come from a police family. I was at Lake Shore Park Friday night and saw six police officers and a sergeant sitting on a wall in front of a residential building at Lake Shore Drive and Pearson watching a softball game across the street. The group was there for more than an hour so it was not lunch. Others saw it and commented on it, too. One person even snapped a picture. It is a scene such as this one that weakens the case for more police officers -- something the police and citizens want.

There is a $30 application fee, per applicant. So wouldnt the City want as many applicants as possible? 30 x 30,000. They could just perpetually accept applications (with a fee) as an alternative revenue stream. The speed camera tickets start at $35, so this would be almost as lucrative.

Not if you do the math. City says it cost 1,000,000 to conduct the exam. So at $30 an applicant times 30,000 you are only taking in 900,000 so the city isnt making any money. Exams aren't cheap.
Prpbably costs thousand for every one hired. By the time a candidate takes the medical and psych exam, along with the polygraoh and the power tests, expenses add up, no counting all the administrative expenses

Just another in the continuing series of misrepresentation of numbers.

Take for example Illinois foreclosures.

By Dan Levy September 13, 2012

Illinois Foreclosures Surging Lure Investors: Mortgages

Illinois soared to the highest foreclosure rate in the U.S. last month as job losses mounted, luring investors like Waypoint Real Estate Group LLC that scoured the state for homes priced at half of peak values.

A total of 17,781 Illinois properties received a filing of default, auction or repossession in August, up 42 percent from a year earlier and the eighth straight monthly increase on an annual basis, according to data seller RealtyTrac Inc. The rate of foreclosure filings per household in the state was one in every 298, vaulting Illinois to the nation’s top spot for the first time in company records dating to January 2005.

* * * *

While foreclosures across the country are slowing, with filings increasing 1 percent in August from the previous month, they climbed 29 percent in Illinois. The national foreclosure rate was one in 681 households, less than half the rate in Illinois.

SOMEONE CALL DAMAGE CONTROL, WE CAN'T HAVE REPORTS LIKE THAT GOING OUT!

Now if you have seen stories promising that Illinois foreclosures have peaked with the numbers being reported showing a decrease consider this:

Zombie foreclosure statistics scary
April 19, 2013|Mary Umberger

...n a zombie foreclosure, the owner has gotten a foreclosure notice and subsequently packed up and moved, apparently thinking it's over — the banks will finish the job. But many banks, for various reasons, haven't followed through with the rest of the process, and the homes languish in the absent homeowners' names.

And the homeowners, sometimes years later, find out they're still on the hook for property taxes.

There are about 302,000 "zombies," according to RealtyTrac, a housing data company that studies foreclosure activity.

See if the bank has enough tax write offs for the year just stop processing the foreclosures. Doesn't mean that they are not still out there. The problems appear to be over and even the investors are happy because THEY THINK all that problem real estate is off the books - woo-hoo we're in recovery! Yeah, right.

Furthermore with Chicago's city ordinances on abandon property why be in a hurry to process foreclosures since you'll be fined for not cutting the grass, maintaining the place, cleaning off graffiti, etc.. not to mention paying the higher real estate tax bills. So like that last story points out. Stick it to the last tenant, make them think foreclosure is complete and let the city and state surprise them with a tax bill which when they receive making matters worse and now pushing them into bankruptcy if they are not already there.

But the reports of Chicago's foreclosure problems being in the past are out there. They are trying to sell it hard, really hard. Is anyone buying it?

Corrupt politicians and media propaganda and the fun with numbers game.

After they create the two-tiered pension system and tell you not to worry -- the major portions of the new pension reform only effect the new guys, that no-one is doing anything to the legacy guys and gals in the system before a certain date.

Yeah after the two-tiered pension system is in place. That's when you push out and make life even more miserable for the tenured people under the old pension rules.

That's why Garry needs 30,000 applicants.

I've seen it time and again in the corporate world. See it's true. The pension for the legacy people wasn't touched. The fact that you will not have employment to the date that you expected and planned to retire is another matter.

Pension reform first. Hiring surge second. Drop the hammer last as you churn out the workforce to lower wages and benefits waving the flag of glory on how the city saved "X" dollars. Don't talk about the careers and lives ruined like they've just done to thousands of teachers. No,,savings is good. Everyone loves saving, yeah?

Emanuel fully intends to take the number of sworn officers far below that. Try looking at a number right around 5000. See, one third of 5000 is all he thinks are required to police this city. That is, after he cons the public into agreeing to give up their police protection in favor of letting him put police only in the ghetto districts, and then hiring civilian wannabe's to patrol the rest of the "non violent" areas of the city.

Wow, and all this done in 3 years??? Lmao yeah ok! Put tge bottle down!

When you get your day off cancelled at the last minute (usually two days notice) to go work downtown you'd do the same thing. When they tell you to stand on a corner and be visible so the mutts see police and get discouraged from commuting crime you do that and you write that they're lazy. You can have it both ways. There's not enough police to man those spots all the time so they have to lure (with OT) or force PPOS (fresh hires) who've never seen the actual I side of a police car yet or even the inside of a lockup or court room. That's what you'll get. Hire more police to save money on the OT costs its simple.

Obviously you or your Police family is not up to date. They have PPOs assigned to a SGT and they are stuck in a fixed area. Instead of complaining maybe you should have talked to them. They would have told you that they were stuck there because of the wilding youths. As for needing more Police try and find 6 Officers and a Sgt in a taxpayer neighborhood. Then you will understand.

How about because even with all the problems, there aren't many jobs out there in the real world where you can make 60g after three years? But if you are a 21 year old with a college degree, from I don't care where and the best you can find is a low paying no benefits job, this ain't a bad deal, regardless of the contract negotiation situation.

I remember once seeing the CPD recruitment pamphlet. It would have been far more honest to show a couple of old timers riding in a dirty, dilapidated pool car in the ghetto. I remember a black and white TV commercial of a Chicago Cop in a leather uniform jacket and round crown cap shining a flashlight walking down a dark alley.

The narration went something like,
"You wouldn't walk down an alley like this for a million bucks. A cop does it for a lot less."

It made an impression on me and I would bet that film is in a can in the vaults of WGN-TV. It would be interesting to see it again.

Sorry pal

Most coppers who got "fucked" really "fucked" themselves.

Just lay low and do the bare minimum .. follow all the RULES and you will do fine on this job.

If you want to be a glory boy superstar cop you will screw YOURSELVE. Shame on you then.

So true. If you have to question whether your actions might be over the line, they probably are. Nobody gives a shit if you're a super-cop, and nobody will remember how great you were (thought you were). Plus, nobody likes anyone who looks out only for themselves and making themselves look good and who isn't a team player.

This department is in sad sad shape. Who the hell wants to join a department thats leadership is inadequate. A mayor that fucks with our pensions and is just as bad if not worse that Daley regarding contract negotiations. Do yourselves a favor. Join another department.

"It made an impression on me and I would bet that film is in a can in the vaults of WGN-TV. It would be interesting to see it again.

Doubtful it was probably destroyed along with all the Garfield Goose,
Ray Rayner& Bozo tapes.
Frazier Thomas was asked if he wanted the tapes, he asked for time to find storage, Tribune company went ahead & destroyed them.
True story.

Gee, let's try and figure out why no one want's this SHIT, THANKLESS job anymore?? Let's start with these "TOP TEN"!

1. You have to live in this dump!

2. You work weekends, holidays, different watches, miss most of your kids activities, etc.!

3. We've averaged about 3% pay increases over the last 10 years!
(What's the cost of living increase average??)

4. The clueless, liberal public would rather sue you than thank you for saving their useless lives!

5. They are taking every thing we took this job for, THE BENEFITS!

6. The thieving politicians are trying to steal our pitiful pensions while they vote themselves lavish pensions and retirement benefits!

7. This department is run by a bunch of political, merit hacks that couldn't engineer a wet dream!

8. We are given the most pathetic equipment and training in LE to do the job!

9. The college requirement has absolutely FAILED, but no one has the BALLS to admit it!

AND 10: DO YOUR JOB AND RISK BEING STRIPPED, FIRED, INDICTED AND GOING BANKRUPT because them political hacks at IPRA would rather believe some fkn 3 page RAP sheet crackhead than the obvious truth!

AND THESE ARE JUST FEW EXAMPLES!!

So good luck Ladner with your bullshit media blitz. Why, you looking for more "fodder" to try and fuck over? How much more money will you cost the city taxpayers when the next wave of lawsuits come filing in?
