Burke Overreach Again

  • Chicago restaurants that serve liquor would have to ban firearms or risk losing their city licenses — under a crackdown advanced Friday in an end-around the state’s new concealed-carry law.

Arguing that “booze and bullets don’t mix,” the City Council’s Finance Committee did what Gov. Pat Quinn tried to do in his amendatory veto of the concealed carry bill, only to be overridden by a defiant General Assembly.

The ordinance championed by Finance Chairman Edward M. Burke (14th) and downtown Ald. Brendan Reilly (42nd) would exempt stores that sell packaged liquor.

But, all other establishments that serve alcohol — not just bars that generate more than half their revenue from liquor — would be required to prohibit firearms on the premises.
Todd Vandermyde of the NRA fired back immediately:
  • Todd Vandermyde, legislative liason for the National Rifle Association (NRA), warned that the Legislature “reserved for itself and exclusively for itself the ability to regulate who can, where and how carry a concealed handgun” in Illinois.

The Burke-Reilly ordinance is “beyond the scope” of the City Council’s authority, Vandermyde said.

“The issue of booze and bullets is a red herring. While it’s a wonderful sound bite, the issue is about being able to go to a restaurant and enjoy the dinner or a meal with your family, with friends and not have to surrender or remove your firearm,” Vandermyde said.

“It’s not about intoxication. It’s not about having a drink. If you’re intoxicated under the act, it is a crime. It carries the same penalties as if you’re caught driving a vehicle under the influence.”

Vandermyde accused aldermen of creating “two classes of citizens” by allowing retired law enforcement officers to carry their weapons into restaurants. Owners and tenants would also be exempt, under the ordinance.

Didn't we get letters a few years ago about Burke being driven over the Wisconsin border in a city car by city cops and enjoying a few frosty beverages at a Department golf outing while armed with his pistol? Why yes we did. And while the city cops have disappeared from his detail, we still got the same letters this year, too, but it seemed a non-issue...until Burke starts with this nonsense again. Now we're sorry we didn't cover it this year.

I am proud to be a member of a prestigious law enforcement professional organization.

Our members are police officers from all levels of government, federal agents, private investigators, attorneys and high-line security people. I and most of these other members are discretely armed and more will be armed with Concealed Carry.

We have dinner meetings at great restaurants in Chicago and the suburbs about six to eight times a year with about 30 to 100 members attending at $40 to $50 a head with a cash bar.

So that's $1,200 to $5,000 catering tab plus bar tab on a weekday night. Tell me a good restaurant is going to want to give that up. I don't think so, and I like the suburban meetings better because of easier parking.

P.S. Two people that will never be member of that organization are Jody Weis and Gary McCarthy.

And speaking of aldercreatures, want to save money around here?

Cut 25 aldermanic positions! We don't need 50 alderman!!

Apparently Aldercreature Burke hangs around with a lot of violent Alcoholics.

Seriously, what other conclusion can the average person reach - as Burke sounds like he's speaking from experience if he thinks no single person who has a drink can be trusted around a loaded weapon.

Which begs the question, a) If Booze & Bullets don't mix why doesn't Burke just Ban Guns from Chicago homes with any Booze in it, and b) if passed as is will McQuickdraw have to leave his 'Shootin-Iron' in the car when he goes out boozing?

What's that corrupt Burke going to propose next? Unless you put a "No Badmouthing Aldermen" sign on your business you will have your business license revoked. Hey, it's not a first amendment thing, it's a business licensing thing. See? It's ok then.

Ald. Burke has a very large security detail. If the Alderman is doing the "people's work" representing the interests of his constituants, why does must he have excessive protection? What exactly does he do and why might he have so many enemies/threats? One can only concluded that he is doing something he shouldn't be doing. Alderman, why all the gun control? What exactly do you fear from armed law abiding citizens? If your conscious is your guide and you had the American citizens concerns in mind when you wield your absolute power (along with your influence in the courts both the Illinois Supreme Court and Cook County), what is your rationale for all your personal protection? Inquiring minds want to know.

"I'd never join a club that would have me as a member." Groucho Marx.

I am sure that what ever fine and respected organization you are a member of it is
probably not the one I wrote about.

To become a member is not as simple as filling out a coupon and writing a check. New members to the organization I refer to must be sponsored and then seconded by other members in good standing.

The proposed new member's name, credentials and a short bio are then published in our newsletter giving our membership the opportunity to affirm or object to the new member.

There are many Chicago Cops of all ranks in this organization and the rest are not fools and know what Weis and McCarthy have done very well. Please don't take it as a dare to try to get either one of them to join as the results would be an embarrassment. I don’t think either one of them would take rejection well and would respond by very underhanded means.

Just a final thought; how would the members of the organization you belong to feel, particularly the CPD members if you tried to bring either Weis or McCarthy in as members?
