- A Northbrook couple charged in a cross-country shoplifting spree was ordered held without bail Monday after prosecutors raised concerns the wife was faking health difficulties and her husband was concealing their wealth.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael Mason detained both Branko and Lela Bogdanov as risks to flee if they were released while awaiting trial on charges of interstate transportation of stolen property. The decade-long scheme netted the family more than $4 million in eBay sales, much of it stolen by Lela Bogdanov inside a bulky black dress outfitted with compartments for stuffing large merchandise, charges alleged.
- Attorney Forrest Tatel, who represents Branko Bogdanov, said his client was never deported despite orders to do so because he no longer had a country of origin after the breakup of Yugoslavia.
We saw a previous article say these thieves were "ethnic Romani." We guess the word "gypsy" is verboten all of the sudden? We didn't get the memo, but we recall a certain colorful descriptions of the gypsies that seemed apt then and even more apt now. We're pretty sure that arresting gypsies put quite a few of our friends and acquaintances through school.

Bogdanov is a European Gypsy. We put a case on him in the early 90's and they were going to deport him. At that time they went around the country doing store diversion burglaries of safes left unlocked in store offices. His attorney is only partly correct in he has no country. At the time no country would take him.
Michelle Obama and Beyonce have a new word they are trying to ban: Bossy. I shit you not. They feel that calling a woman "bossy" is demeaning and causes low self-esteem in young girls.
I guess those young girls are supposed to forget about Beyonce, who uses the word "bitch" to describe women in her music, and Beyonce's hubby, who's "music" is littered with the dreaded "N-word".
I can think of a few words to replace "bossy" with. How about you?

I think arresting gypsies nowadays would somehow be racial profiling.
A few years ago the WC read off a description of some "Eastern Travellers" that were preying on the elderly. Everyone looked around confused until someone figured out they were talking about gypsies. PC run amok.
Anyone needing a lesson on gypsies need to look no farther than Borat. He's got the straight dope.

I arrested gypsies in 019 and 024. Scamming lying bastards. Often one family would feud on another and they would call the police on each other. Those were easy, advise they get a private attorney of a report that went nowhere. The Mitchells. the Bimbo's etc. They still come around and play just like dude when they get caught, scream and fake illness/injury. Pure scum of people.
This case, the judge released one daughter (30's) into the care of her sister, the sister with a previous retail theft conviction. How much chance of her showing up in court again on an I-bond?
Let's hope the judge keeps the no-bond on the parents. Mom will run the Feds ragged demanding medical attention. The Feds used to have a contract for medical care with Thorek at Irving/Broadway so maybe that is where she will try to run from.

Speaking of Gypsies and Thorek. Old man Thorek has a daughter named Phillis. She goes by "Bright Morning Star". She was taken for thousands of dollars by a gypsy who convinced her he was her son from a previous life. He skipped to Arizona and was never charged.
I think Gypsy's are so romantic. The stories and fables of them out of Europe show a fun loving traveling people who are very artistic and talented. I don't believe the stories of them stealing.
Gypsies are trained to steal from their births. It's ingrained in their DNA. They are even more of a problem in Western Europe, where all political parties, left or right, want to send them back to their country of origin.

Why It Is OK For Gypsies To Steal --
At the Crucifixion, a Gypsy kid sneaked up and stole one of the nails that was to be used.

They will actually tell you this.
Their lives should be about over. They have coveralls and a plastic bag with a toothbrush, that's about it. For organized $7.1 mil theft ring over a decade, they will probably RICO, US Marshals auction off the $1.4 million house and everything in it and all the fancy cars and bikes, and seize any bank accounts they can find -- if the Bogdanovs didn't quietly do their banking with the Gypsy King, as is frequent.
They did this to Rita Crundwell, former treasurer of Dixon, IL who stole $54 million and bought a mansion, horse farm, Wild West-theme antiques, etc. She didn't look happy with the 20 years they gave her.
I think they are talking 12 years for Bogdanovs, then probably deportation -- like you say, if any country will take them...
Good riddance.

Never heard that before, but you have to admit - that's a pretty good story.
I am sure some Cook County judges would accept that as a plea.
