A New Initiative

  • The Chicago Police Department is getting ready to combat violence this summer with special overtime patrols in parks and public housing and on public transit, officials said Tuesday.

The partnership between police, the Chicago Transit Authority, the Chicago Housing Authority and the Chicago Park District is part of what the city is calling the Summer Surge Overtime Initiative.

Each agency will contribute to pay the overtime of 100 additional officers on weekdays, 200 on weekends and 300 on holiday weekends, a police spokesman said. Those agencies will help the police department determine where to deploy those officers, said Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy.
You can tell it's devised by the mayor because it once again, spends money he doesn't have. It's also four-hour shifts, (VRI Junior), and it's almost all foot patrols - another Rahm hallmark (no money for equipment).

Will one news reporter with some balls finally call out rahm and mc carthy on this. If they keep saying crime is down and that there are enough police then why are they coming up with more and more overtime initiatives and extra police working days off. And why all the extra police as it gets warmer if warm weather doesn't affect crime. We know the answers and don't believe the bullshit lies. Can one of you reporters ask and dont stop asking until you get the damn truth.

Any plans to deploy some of these extra bodies in the taxpaying, city worker-dominated districts experiencing increased crime because their neighborhoods have been stripped of police and sent to save the ghetto savages from themselves?

Might 022, 008, 016 and like places be the beneficiaries of these extra "boots on the ground"?

No?

Then fuck Rahm Emanuel, Garry McCarthy and anyone else promoting and/or participating in this program. Actually, fuck all the aforementioned even if taxpayers were the only ones to reap the benefits of this initiative.

No contract for two years (AGAIN). Ranks depleted thru attrition and lack of hiring. Shit vehicles, equipment and training. Hundreds of millions earmarked for pet projects while your pension is being attacked right under your nose. But there'll be no shortage of Sheep in blue shirts bending over backwards to work this shit.

You clowns will get everything you deserve and then some. It's just a damned shame that your greed and shortsightedness will drag down the entire ship.

And what if no one volunteered to work these initiatives? Would Rahm and Garry finally admit the department is short-handed? Would they hire more officers to man the streets, and essentially more officers who could be contributing members of the pension fund?

It seems that the more police officers who are retiring, the less police officers the city is hiring.

Rahm says, if we can't bleed them out, we'll greed them out, by offering them more overtime instead of hiring more people.

If we need to hire police officers back at time and a half EVERY day of the year, when is some clever news person going to put two and two together? The Mayor consciously depleted the Department ranks and now we are at a dangerously low manpower level.

So what does this mean to the average taxpayer? The police officers that work your area are not there because they sent them to some other busier area. When your officer is there, they have worked MANDATORY overtime and no longer want to do ANY work. They are tired. They are angry they have not been able to be with their families. (Not all of us are miserable alcoholics that abandoned our families.)

All in all this looks to be a very dangerous summer for all of us, not just the gangbangers shooting each other. Maybe it's time for a new strategy. May I suggest electing new officials?

Maybe a locker audit because new officers came into the dist because they finally opened up the dist to bids. Subsequently the new officers are asking for lockers while previous officers assigned to the dist have 2 to 3 lockers. Keep the rumors coming genius. That's funny.... extra officers on mass transit. Funny because the city has been receiving federal money to have SWAT officers at the airports and riding the L. What did the city do? They pocketed the money until they were caught not filling those spots. Then they scrambled and bought "SWAT" gear for 40 guys assigned to mass transit to "make them" SWAT officers. That idea backfired too which led the city to tell SWAT that they would need to do TORCH too hence the upcoming test for SWAT because with the number of officers currently there they can't cover safe passage, the airports, the L, and SORT. The rumor that they need 40 more people is true to cover everything the city wants. So there really is federal money for extra bodies.... it's just that the city just finally decided to use it for the intended purpose. That's how money always appears for their "special projects"

Just proves more hiring will change nothing. What difference does it make if you have new hires on the street instead of the 400 or so po's working VRI or RDO. There would still be just as many po's on the street because with new hires, VRI and RDO officers wouldnt be working.
Actually with say 1,000 new hires, split into 23 districts,3 watches, days off, there would be less police on the street.

If this is the best plan the fool political hacks can come up with please tell Quinn he better have the National Guard units ready to deploy throughout Chicago this summer because the Cpd with its 20% lack of hires and 30% housemouses obviously are out gunned and outmanned....foot patrol to respond to drive by shootings?...surely civilians are no longer that naïve to believe anything less than putting full street force out in each district with vehicles that are mechanically safe, and indemnify the force legally; to go forth and take this formerly great city back will work. Retired in 2010 when the mantra of keep doing more with less, and less police in the street, and not enough working vehicles daily to use each shift became the norm. Watching the city sink more each year until Chicago is the topic of every news media, for the horrors of non stop violence and gang activity. I watch and read more about Chicago ruinous politics and citywide crime via Phoenix news and National outlets than ever before. Restore your police department and stop playing with peoples lives. It is safer to be an American in Afghanistan in US army than a Chicago citizen for Gods sake. Stop the carnage...put more police in streets with squads and decent firepower. Look at what worked in the 70s and 80s and know that it was mostly strength in numbers plus a fast response time with very proactive police who had each others back....that is what serve and protect meant then....it meant protect the good citizens; not kiss the asses of big mouth reverends or breeders. of bangers. Proud old school.

All these new VRI plans...

PLUS Canceled Days Off...

PLUS Court Dates...

People will be breaking down and making mistakes and maybe getting themselves, a partner or a citizen killed.

What do you do now if you are too damn tired after multiple shifts, VRI and court? You call up and say I'm just too damn tired to go any further.

The Time-Due slots are all full, so what is your Boss, maybe one who cares going to do? I know but...

5/01/2014 11:41:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

That is the dumbest thing I think I read on this blog. Greed? How is taking care of your family greed ?

The "greed" part rhymed. I didn't call P.O.s greedy for working VRI. I was saying that Rahm and Garry are calling us greedy by offering us more money to work our days off instead of hiring more police officers.

In another scene in Braveheart, Longshanks orders his archers to fire into the battlefield. His lieutenant says that the archers would hit their own men with the arrows. But Longshanks says, but we will hit some of the enemy too. The point is that Longshanks was a bastard just like our current and former mayors. They will do anything as long as it suits their own needs, and not the needs of the citizenry, and if some of those in the battle suffer, so be it.

There is nothing wrong with taking care of your family. In fact that is what you are supposed to do. Just don't depend on the extra wages from VRI to sustain a higher level of living, because there's no guarantee that VRI will be around forever.

But to start a debate, or to start people thinking, I wonder what the long-term consequences will be by the department not hiring more officers: burnout, officer safety, ability to get days off, morale, etc. Also, more important is the consequence to our futures in retirement. Will less officers contributing to the fund hurt the future pensions of future retirees?

Rahm is no fool. He didn't get to where he is by being a nice guy. I just question where this is all going.

Sorry for the long post. Let the debate end or begin.

I do not work VRI and I am not in a position to be in court much if at all.

What I do see and hear is officers coming to work tired, sleep deprived and irritable. They want time off that they earned but the micro-managers will not let them have it.

This is because of a serious lack of manpower which is being ignored by the media while they praise Rahm and McNumbnuts for stupid strategies while people die on the streets, our homes are at risk and we take the risks of having no backup.

I do not think it is whining to say we don't see police in our neighborhood streets anymore and whose fault is that.
