NPR On-Views Gunfire

This is amusing. NPR was doing another one of those feel-good stories they're famous for, this time on how to fix-up Englewood. No word if bulldozers or carpet bombing was mentioned, but during the interview...:
  • An NPR interview in Chicago included an all-too-real example of the city's violence when a burst of gunfire erupted down the street from where NPR's David Schaper was conducting an interview Wednesday. He had been speaking to a neighborhood activist when a gunman opened fire nearby.

David was reporting a story on efforts to reclaim and repurpose community eyesores when the shots were fired. The radio story that aired on today's is jarring, as a talk about community engagement is suddenly overcome by shots that rang out shortly after kids had gotten out of school.
The reporter's description is one of shocked disbelief:
  • "About 30 or 40 yards away, a man is standing outside a car firing a large semi-automatic rifle at a target around the corner we cannot see.

"Asiaha pushes the little girl indoors and some people duck down and scurry, while some of us just watch in bewilderment — while the shooter gets back into his car and drives down the street right in our direction."
Go to this link here and listen to the interview. The gunfire starts just after the 1:00 minute mark. No word if this rifle might have been one of those that disappeared from the train yard recently.

You must understand that your average Chicago gunman does not hold with the American sniper philosophy of one shot, one kill. In Chicago it is many shots fired, few hit their intended target.

Just like condoms are being passes out to our kids at school, why haven't the liberals suggested to offer free 1 day seminars to gang bangers on how to shoot a gun? The class fee (if can't be afforded)) could be covered by tax payers.

Think of all the fewer random bullets flying around if they were just taught to shoot straight.

Rahm would be remembered for this pilot program - probably more remembered for this than Divy.

Funny how NPR does not tell the whole story about Englewood. How it was once a prosperous, safe middle class white neighborhood until about the 1970s.

I will tell you the history of Englewood in a nutshell because I used to live there.

Starting after WWII race baiting liberals tricked blacks to give up their land/farms in the southern states and move to Chicago for good paying industrial jobs.

From 1940s-1970s blacks poured into Englewood. Real estate "blockbusting" turned Englewood from white to black neighborhood in about 10 years.

After this happened crime skyrocketed. Arson/insurance fraud skyrocketed, factories closed down, welfare, drugs, and gangs started to plague Englewood. Fathers disappeared. Gangster disciples took over.

So now you have a hideous, high crime cesspool called Englewood. Look on Google maps. You will see tons of vacant lots due to arson. Englewood is a microcosm of Detroit. Sad to see a one nice area turn into such a war zone.

*The ONLY economical way to save Englewood in my opinion is to take those vacant lots and sell them for $1. I myself have considered buying up 3 connected vacant lots in my old neighborhood, walling them off, and using the land for urban farming. It would be a nice sanctuary for me and my family.

All I would have to pay is the already low property taxes. If dozens of people did this you would see somewhat of a tax base return to Englewood and push out the crazy people. This would take years to do, but its a start.

In light of a funding crisis and government shutdown last year, the big corporation for public broadcasting received a piddly 445million while Veterans were shut out of Washington D.C. Memorials. An example of government cronyism, sales were through the roof for Sesame Street books, clothing, DVDs, dolls and other various trademarked products. Public broadcasting financing must not be cut otherwise economic growth from Chinese made products may cut into privately licensed profit initiatives. The trademark holders make are the winners while the taxpayers pay their freight. Sweet. Hundreds of millions of dollars in profits are made from public funded PBS sanctioned products. Consider the benefit to taxpayers when public money is used contributing to the 17 trillion dollar debt. Remember we cannot slash this funding or children will be deprived of Bert and Ernie. This slashing will make their products less valuable or less desirable at the toy stores and may lead to higher unemployment in red communist china.

I grew up in Englewood area ( Garfield and racine) . it was always a poor white area, many people did not have cars and their entertainment was going to the local tavern on the weekends. Most of the taverns had small bands in them. You could walk to factory jobs on Western or on 59th street. The neighborhood started to change from white to black around 1966. My grandmother was robbed on her way to church, my grandfather was stoned while sitting on our backporch, just about every business in the area was robbed or an attempt was made. garages were looted, cars stolen. The white people moved out, took a property loss, but the businesses and factories followed. You can argue the sociological reasons for this all you want, but it did happen and embittered a lot of people.

"Funny how NPR does not tell the whole story about Englewood. How it was once a prosperous, safe middle class white neighborhood until about the 1970s. >>>"

Same thing with the Westside but earlier. When I started when I working for the Department in 1973 I got to talk to a lot of old cops who worked in the 10th, 11th and 15th. Some had grown up there and worked there so they spent 50-60 years in the same neighborhood.

They watched, sadly, the disintegration of what was an "American Dream" neighborhood that produced two generations that won the World Wars into the rats infested, welfare dependent, broken window hell we all know.

Even today young coppers see the old churches, synagogues and what were once nice homes in these neighborhoods and they can picture in their minds what they were like many years ago.

So much for the Democrats and the Great Society.

I grew up at 57 & Halsted and Garfield & Carpenter. I disagree when you say this was a poor white area. Visitation Parish was full of beautiful homes and apartment buildings on the boulevard, and on the side streets. There were also many affluent people in the parish, which was the largest and richest parish in Chicago. Of course there were poor people, but there was also a whole lot of middle class people with nice homes and apartments. I certainly would never call that a "poor" neighborhood, until it changed. I lived there until Dec. of 76. Unfortunately, I was there long after it changed.

Englewood was far from poor. The liberal myth is blacks inherited a ghetto. This is not true and is told to make blacks and liberals not dwell on the fact that a thriving neighborhood was turned into a third world country when blacks moved in and whites moved out. Saw it with my own eyes.

Well, I do in the car after I drop off my daughter at school in the morning. Mainly because the bias on WBBM News Radio is not much better, and the commercials on that station make my skin crawl. I'd rather hear NPR's biased reporting (which I love to hate), then listen to used car jingles & other scam ads (which I truly hate).

And besides… sometimes the reporting is SO biased… so unbelievably stupid, it's fun to share links with sites like this. (You're welcome, BTW, SCC. Love the work you do.)
