Joe Airhart. Co-worker. And a great friend.
Rick Francis. Just found an old reminder that a spar investigation on him was overdue. Sat on the attic floor next to the old box of papers and cried.
And too many more. Too many more.

REMINDER: There is in fact a 'Retiree' contingent that marches in St. Jude as well.
They are within the first 6-7 groups assembled which means they step off within the first 5-10 minutes, with minimal walking.
Hopefully this year we'll have another great turnout for one of the oldest and proudest traditions of the Chicago Police Dept., the 82nd Annual St. Jude March.
God bless them all.

Eulogy by Lt Roland B. Gittelsohn, ChC, USNR at the dedication
of the 5th Marine Division Cemetery, Iwo Jima–March 1945

"This is perhaps the grimmest, and surely the holiest task we have faced since D-Day. Here before us lie the bodies of comrades and friends. Men who until yesterday or last week laughed with us, joked with us, trained with us. Men who were on the same ships with us, and went over the sides with us as we prepared to hit the beaches of this island. Men who fought with us and feared with us. Somewhere in this plot of ground there may lie the man who could have discovered the cure for cancer. Under one of these Christian crosses, or beneath a Jewish Star of David, there may now rest a man who was destined to be a great prophet–to find the way, perhaps, for all to live in plenty, with poverty and hardship for none. Now they lie here silently in this sacred soil, and we gather to consecrate this earth in their memory.

It is not easy to do so. Some of us have buried our closest friends here. We saw these men killed before our very eyes. Any one of us might have died in their places. Indeed, some of us are alive and breathing at this very monent only because men who lie here beneath us had the courage and strength to give their lives for ours. To speak in memory of such men as these is not easy. Of them too can it be said with utter truth: "The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here. It can never forget what they did here."

No, our poor power of speech can add nothing to what these men and the other dead of our Division who are not here have already done. All that we even hope to do is follow their example. To show the same selfless courage in peace that they did in war. To swear that by the grace of God and the stubborn strength and power of human will, their sons and ours shall never suffer these pains again. These men have done their jobs well. They have paid the ghastly price of freedom. If that freedom be once again lost, as it was after the last war, the unforgivable blame will be ours, not theirs. So it is we the living who are here to be dedicated and consecrated.

We dedicate ourselves, first, to live together in peace the way they fought and are buried in this war. Here lie men who loved America because their ancestors generations ago helped in her founding, and other men who loved her with equal passion because they themselves or their own fathers escaped from oppression to her blessed shores. Here lie officers and men, negroes and whites, rich men and poor–together. Here no man prefers another because of his faith or despises him because of his color. Here there are no quotas of how many from each group are admitted or allowed. Among these men there is no discrimination. No prejudices. No hatred. Theirs is the highest and purest democracy.

Seemed like a good turn out.

Sadly, too many officers looking like total crap and grab assing in formation (as usual). For the sake of the survivors, your brothers and sisters and mostly for yourself, spend some of that uniform allowance and keep your dress uniform looking right.

After all 90% of feeling good, is looking good.

BE SAFE.

GOD Bless Us All...

Plenty of enemies.
Can't seem to do anything right
In the eyes of many.
Our very existence is a stench
In many nostrils.
Not a single soul out of all the powers
That be, has the uprightness of
character to call for a pause in the
ongoing propaganda campaign
against us.
Ill winds pertaining to our present
and future well being blow from all
directions of the compass.
We've taken many blows and the
powers that be want us unable to strike
back BECAUSE we're The Police...

Let them mock, laugh and be haughty
because they walk the halls of power
and are insulated from our reality by
their treasure and influence.

This is. Our day. As we remember. Our departed.

We are much more than the people who cheer and actively seek our destruction. Some of whom sat in
the reviewing stand. Some of whom are captains of
commerce, industry and media and yes even called
men of the cloth...

How they openly revile and disdain us even as we
put in work they would ALL turn tail and run from if
it were presented to them with none of the risks and
none of the horrors that makes better men awake
from a broken sleep sweating and with their hearts
racing... They so blithely say, "So what? That's what you signed up for and you're over-compensated in our eyes."

THEY sleep sweetly and without a Policeman's cares or concerns...

GOD Bless Us All.
The blood sacrifice of our fallen is holy.
The work of the living is Blessed.
Our Lord and Savior has said so.

Who are the strident naysayers who joyously
say it is not so?

In the end, they are the nonentities they proclaim US to be...

This is. Our day.

Emanuel only comes to glad hand coppers and try to make himself look good to the media cameras. He doesn't give 2 shits about us or our fallen. Our events are politics tools and nothing more. Same said for McCarthy. He's a political suck-hole and has been the water boy for politicians from the east coast to Illinois. He is nothing to us. He uses the CPD as a personal prop and to further the agendas of the politicians he caters to. I go to honor only the heroes and their families not for any boss (and I am one) or any politician. They can all stay away as far as I'm concerned. We don't want or need them. And always remember the salute at the reviewing stand is a salute to the Flag and to the families of the Fallen officers, NOT a salute of acknowledgement or a sign of respect to any of the command staff or politician in it.

True. Some of us went to avoid inspection. Some of us just love to go hang out with coppers, also true. So how many different families of fallen officers did you speak to today? You walked about hundred yards nothing more nothing less. That accomplished nothing. Wanna help? Shut your mouth and open your check book. We had good weather and descent turn out, for that I am grateful.

I know that's what I would want to see my brothers screw the politicians and if it was at my expense I would not be the least bit upset I might actually be proud to be a cop the 1st time in 22 yrs .

I've made it every year and not one single year did I go because of any boss. I went for the families of the fallen. Just like if I fell, I would want my family to see that my fellow co-workers cared about me. What I chose to do with my life made a difference.

When I hear these people make these excuses for not going, it absolutely sickens me. Just imagine for a minute that you were one of the fallen that year and every one of us thought like you. Your family standing on that podium and nobody walks by. What a disgrace. How do u think they would feel. That's why I get my ass up early every year and make dam sure I'm there for those families.

Great turn out! This is one of the few times of the year where you CANNOT be selfish but selfless and committed. This is a march of Brother & Sisterhood for the Fallen Soldiers. Those that deliberately did not show because of whatever b.s. excuse or reason should be shamed and should hope not the time would come that we would be marching for you or your family.

Oh and p.s., being in-town while on furlo is NOT a good reason, but lazy and repulsive.

Cant help but think that somewhere up there, flash, bennie, solorio, taylor, Darryl, lewis and the rest of our fallen brother were up there marching with. On the grand stand is God, with st Jude by his side, a thousand angels behind them and they're all clapping as each officer passes by letting them know how much they are appreciated and what a great job they did. And at the end of the march they all stand and look down on us smiling saying what a great day today is to be a Chicago Police officer. God agreed. Watch your six.

You must be dumb or stupid. Mayor Emanuel doesn't have a shit about us. He was there for the cameras so he looks good. If the mayor really did care, he would negotiate in good faith, resolve our contract (a few years ago New York City negotiated their police contract in about two months). That shows respect for the officers, not just showing up to our most solemn event. Then on Monday morning he will be back at it fucking with us.

5/04/2014 04:51:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

I went to St. Jude, and as always, what a solemn event. My wife said the same thing. On our way home, she said "God forbid, but this is a reminder that at anytime anyone can die in the line of duty". Just read the stories on the Officer Down Memorial Page- https://www.odmp.org/.

The next time "it" happens, it can be anyone of us. Because of that, we honor or fallen. Out of basic respect, please don't chew bubble gum, don't take photos with your smart phone while marching, don't talk, don't joke around, don't take your little kids with you during the march, don't walk your dog during the march, act and look your best.

I spent 34 years on the job starting in the late 60's. I counted the number of stars in the Honored Case when I retired and had to turn in my star.I counted 98. That is a lot. I knew or worked with many, many of them. One from my recruit class. I often think about how lucky I was to survive and retire in relatively good health. I think about this often and never will forget those names and faces.

Ya, it happened to me also, not only with CPD, but with suburban cops. Not that I really did anything wrong, but had some family members who had contact. I just brush it off. Many of the cops today don't care that you are a retired police officer, they think you are an old fart and useless and really don't know anything. But, I go for the dead and their memory. It could have been me so I will never forget those that were killed.Forever young!

GET THE WORD OUT>

FROM A RELIABLE SOURCE: I have been talking to a high ranking source from the Cook County's Sheriff's Office who is soon going to be retiring and allegedly going public with this information.

The Sheriff's office has recently created non-written policy to actively discriminate against the United States armed forces veterans and active members. Lawyers for the Sheriff's office have concurred that military candidates for the department of corrections are not good candidates for employment because what Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart deems them as 'high risk' candidates for psychological problems.

The source says that one of these very qualified candidate served three tours in Afghanistan, passed all testing with flying colors, and was still denied employment because of his service to his country.

Please get the word out and bump this up. We can not let this happen.

OLD RETIRED GUY HERE, AGAIN.........!
Went to the march today. I have been going steady, since I retired. I read a lot of comments above, regarding the decorum of the march. I would like to stick my two cents in. I feel that bringing children to the march is a very positive thing. Those children marching alongside their parents has become more and more a tradition in the last ten years or so. I think its great. Hey My Dad, MOM or Aunt or Uncle is a Police Officer ! Remember folks MOST of the Crowd and fellow officers are family. It's Mostly Family Out There. I thought some of the officers should have given there appearance a little more thought. Some of the officers had no ties. White gloves, are a thing of the past. Walking with your personnel dog, is just poor taste. Outside of that, I thought it was Great. As far as other retirees posting that there feelings were hurt, by no one noticing them ?????? Our time is past, I had some great partners, and some great memories of my time on the job. In the end that's all you can hope for. Yes, I will be there next year, and every year I can still walk.
Bless You All !!!!!!

I'll never go again, after the disrespectful treatment i got as a Retiree, a few years ago. Job is now loaded with young, disrespectful punks with Badges.

5/04/2014 01:10:00 PM

You know what, i take these comments with an absolute grain of salt. I came across a Retiree a couple years ago, and i have to say, that guy was one of the biggest F'n jagoff's i've ever met. So I don't know who you are, but just b/c you are a retiree does not give you carte blanche to treat current on-duty policeman like shit.

Great commemoration and turnout but Cline really messed it up by moving it from Michigan Ave to the middle of nowhere with no visibility.

I must say that it was awesome on Michigan Ave.

5/04/2014 05:23:00 PM

I would guess that the Mumbling Midget cock sucker former mayor of Chicago told Cline to move the march. Nothing like that happens on the word of one department head. They go grovel to Mumbles to seek approval or else to say "yeah boss, sure boss, anything you want boss, I'm thrilled to do what you want boss." (sound of sucking and licking follow)

I recall years ago I went to a retirement party of a good boss, someone was praising him and said, "...and as far as I can tell, he never needed knee pads to get promoted." Well this drew a standing ovation. Like I said, it was a long time ago.

5/04/2014 04:56:00 PM

50 during my career including one from my recruit class.

Thanks to ALL who marched.
This is and always will be a day to put your personal differences aside and march for those friends & co-workers who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Be the bigger person and put all the BS aside and show the Gold Star families that they will NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!
Many of us have been hosed by some jerk-off boss or by the politics of this job, but it's not the fault of our Gold Star families.
Let's make them proud & let them know their loved ones will ALWAYS be with us!
Thank you & GOD bless.
Signed, a f'in PROUD 28 yr wheel-gunner!!!

I'm retired too. Yes, there may be PO's who don't understand the history and those who went before. For the most part, that's not true IMHO. I called 018 a while back with a question, the desk guy asked where I worked and I said I was retired. He answered my question and I said thanks for helping out a retired guy. He says "no sweat, once a copper, always a copper".

So, to the retiree who says he won't go to St. Jude? Let it go brother, leave your ego at home. It's for the families of the fallen. And nothing else.

And on a personal note? I really miss wearing my uniform on St. Jude Sunday.

St. Jude is for the Police Officers that have given the ultimate sacrafice, and for us never to forget! Who cares that it was moved from Michigan Ave? Some of the news networks carry fine stories about St. Jude March, reaching the throngs. My God, get over Michigan Ave., it's not a festive parade, and viewership on the Ave. was always meager. We let the the Gold Star Families know that we care and remember!

Hey SSC and Cilne, I just got this idea. I saw ALOT of retired coppers who attend the St. Jude March, a lot of them lost a friend, partner, or family member in the Line of Duty. I am pretty sure many of them would love to put on that uniform one more time to show respect for their fallen. They all get a retirement star and still have a uniform laying around. Why not have a retired Chicago Police patch made for their uniform, make a retired unit guide arm, and allow the retired officers to march in the procession? It would be nice to allow retired bosses, sergeants, officers, and detectives march. If Police Explorers are allowed to march, so should our retiree's be allowed to march if they wish. Come on guys lets get it done for next year!

5/04/2014 12:07:00 PM

Don't worry. Thousands of officers showing up all brushed up and strac is a massive display of contempt for our tiny, vicious mayor, who is looking at something he could never be -- and he knows it.

Damn, I saw a clip from that staged "Chicagoland" dumper -- here he is, hunching into his limo-SUV-tank with his face all screwed up like he just bit a lemon.

Oi, feh.

The best part of Michigan Avenue was the tourists in the hotel windows and the ones who came down to street level to see it and film it and sometimes talk with us. They were always appreciative and seemed kind of amazed at the sea of blue.

Was Rham there? Didn't see him.

Seemed like a poor turnout but I was towards the end so don't know for sure. If you didn't show up and you don't have a legitimate reason you are an asshole and someone I wouldn't ever want to partner up with.

5/04/2014 06:54:00 PM

Papers reported only his wife was there, with no explanation why he wasn't. (Because, as we all know, she's been such a strong and vocal supporter for the police for such a long time.)
He was probably at a ribbon cutting for some huge construction project we don't have money for.

My name is JOSEPH STEFANEC

i work in the 015 district on the 2nd watch and i have a dog of 66.

I do not hide behind the word "Anonymous".

I do not believe that having served in the UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS makes me any better than anyone else, but that it made me a better citizen and gave me the courage to do things that i may not have done. So when the Marine Corps Hymn is played I stand at attention and remember the Marines who came before me giving the ultimate sacrifice and I stand as well when the emerald society plays and remember the Police Officers who gave their lives to protect the citizens of Chicago.

I do believe we are all brothers and sisters no matter the feelings for certain topics, that when it counts we are there for each other. I Hope and pray that 2014 comes as a peaceful year for our police family and we cherish our families at home.

Question,
Why do the bosses have a reviewing stand, I can't remember did they have that back in when we marched on Michigan ave??

5/04/2014 09:06:00 AM

There was a reviewing stand back then....on Chicago Avenue just east of State....walk past, turn south on State and enter Holy Name Cathedral...or keep on walking and meet at Mike's.
