Disarming Info

We haven't seen the case report ::cough cough:: and we haven't seen any of the detective paperwork ::cough cough:: and we certianly haven't been tipped off by any friendly people wearing gold stars ::cough cough bullshit cough::, but here's some info:
  • it seems this offender had military experience - military police experience, so he was more than familiar with Level III holsters and how to remove a weapon from one
  • the Walgreen's employee deserves a lot of praise and a medal for staying with the fight. It's possible he was the one who hit the magazine release and saved the Department a couple of funerals.
We're sure more will be forthcoming as the days go on, but remember, a Level III holster isn't the be-and-and-end-all. Someone with skills and determination can still get it from you.

Only question I have is what holster the officer was wearing? Remember officers, protect yourselves and give yourselves a chance out there don't become complacent.

Training is what matters. The offender trained. Most of our cops do not. They look at it as a sign of honor that they only shoot thirty rounds a year and have a dry rotted, worn brown leather belt and holster. That says nothing more than you are a careless slob and completely unprepared for armed confrontations.

Part of the problem if not the most significant is the Cook County Judiciary system. These hypes are not spending any time in jail and the CC States Atty, a political hack along with a bitter County Board President and pasty CC Sheriff feel there are just too-too many people going to jail for possession of dope, (and "minor theft crimes"), the stuff that makes them steal, to sell to the foreigners corner store, to buy the stuff that keeps them in high.
And these elected idiots want to legalize dope, even if medical, they'll demand that the government subsidize the cost.
Oh no, we don't need more jails, it's too costly.

I have not read about the incident this post refers to, but I would not be surprised of the Walgreen's employee gets fired for not running to hide. I've read about other companies firing employees for not giving in to people with guns during robberies. Maybe these circumstances are different, but even if they are not, I absolutely agree that the action deserves props and the employee, respect.

Reminds me of how wrong things can go when civilians do not help police when they clearly need help. At times like that we are all human and all lives are precious and deserve saving by anyone able to assist.

Shame on the dispatcher, the SGT''s and the LT. I listen to the audio. You can clearly hear someone having a broken transmission which sounded like a cry for help. This happened at least two times. Over a 3 minute span the dispatcher asked if there was a emergency on the zone a few times then handled radio communictions like normal until the officer broke through again callig 10-1 and then the 911 calls started poring in . Why wasn't there a radio roll call done ? Then check GPS and use it for safety for once rater then to jam a copper up.

Im the poster from andersonville in the original post at 9:53pm. I will personally take it upon myself to reach out to both store and corporate mgmt to voice my respect and pledge my full business pending retention of the employee. Should I or anyone else discover that the employee is canned over a blanket rule of non engagement with shoplifters past the inside of premises (or some general rule like ten feet from front door - typical corporate policies) it should be noted on this blog so as to start a go fund me page or something similar. I am man enough to be truthful in saying that while I would like to believe I would have reponded in a similar fashion and assist CPD as they did, I cant truthfully say it would happen that way as I have never found myself having to make that choice. For that I want to make sure they get their recognition.

Beyond that though, I wish I could look each one of you (CPD) in the eye, shake your hand, and tell you how genuinely grateful I am to have you protecting my families lives, often at great risk to your own. Because that itself is not feasible, I will put my energy towards advocating against pension reform, for hiring of more officers, and trying to wave and say thank you when I see you out and about. God Bless you all and your families. Thank you for everything. Know that we are not all sheeple, that a large segment of us realize how fortunate and grateful we are to have you, and that when our children ask us about heroes we talk about you all.

Same thing happened in 019 two weeks ago. Cops go on a call, they ask for some info over air. Maybe a min later they can't get ahold of the cops. Dispatcher kept saying is there a car coming in, is there someone on the zone with an emergency. Then calls the beat officer numerous times with no response. WTF, send a car immediately to see if they ok. Still no response, then finally a gargled message form the officer that is barley audible, I need help, couldn't tell what he said. Finally they call a 10-1 cars pour over there, and find the officer almost passed out. He hit his head on the concrete. Good job by the dispatcher.

I just saw the video of the whole incident. It happened fast and shit hit the fan hard. One of the p.o.'s is young in shape and works out, he got hit right away and the offender targeted him first in my mind to daze him to get to the other officer. The offender is big and knew exactly what he was doing. By some grace of god the magazine came out and you can see the offender trying to squeeze the gun numerous times.

I hope they use the video as a training video. Cops got attacked shit just went to hell and fast. Also they were flagged down and did not tell the dispatcher where they were at. We all have done that. Don't judge the cops. The holster was a level 2 I believe, it was not a pancake holster, or a blackhawk holster.

this incident remained an "incident" by the grace of god instead of a tragedy. We can only learn from this. Props to officers who fought the fight! 1: call out location first prior to engagement...if possible. 2: description if flight. 3: 10-1 if fight. 4: we can shoot people regardless of ferguson or our president. 5:hire more police. 6: rescind squad pilot program and "no job" mission cars before this happens or PAY US A LOT MORE!

Again. no second guessing Officers on scene. They were the police an earned it. The situation can happen again with different variables. stay safe everyone. Remember: your safety comes before any crime.

You sir, are exactly what's wrong with this department. You sit there and try to minimize the dangers of this job while at the same time mocking those that do not. If you want to be the kind of copper that merely writes reports, goes to lunch and laughs at those that want to do a little more, then have at it but do not ridicule those that take their oath, their job seriously. You think those guys that carry extra mags or flashlights funny? Ask that copper that was in a shootout in Skokie a while back if a copper can ever carry too many mags. Or the guys in North Hollywood years ago. Aw shit, you don't even have to go that far. Ask some of your colleagues or old timers that have been involved in a shooting. Ask them how many mags they carry. Get your head screwed on right sir before it's too late.

I have never seen that worthless GPS used for anything that might be helpful to the cops on the street. Daley bought it remember, and then ordered that his limos not have it installed.

We thought, mistakenly, that the dispatchers could be able to tell where we are. No such luck. Anyone remember the hillbillies installing the shit, in our parking lots, out of the trunks of their cars?

Fucking Jed Clampett and his family were out there telling us how good it was going to be if we were all alone on a desolate road. Hey, fucking hillbilly goofball, there are no lonely country roads in this part of the world. It is Chicago. Another Richard M Daley fuck job. Must be related to the Vaneckos somehow.

Seriously, yes, a fast call of the roll could tell at least WHO was in trouble. Just yell out the location if you can't get anything else out there. We will come quick.

Anyone remember Wally and Billy on Zone 3 radio back at 1121 S State?

Scanner radio clubs used to invite those guys to meetings, they were stars, their shift was the Wally and Billy Show.

Wally was the last Police Dispatcher in the City still getting D2 pay after he was the last PO to get launched from the old CC room. He pushed a beat car around 019 for a few years before retirement for D2 pay and the title code for Police Dispatcher.

He had the perfect voice for police dispatcher. He got on the console and inspired confidence.

""Weapon detention drills should be added the annual qualification""

When I don't get a 100% on my annual qualification, I give my weapon a detention.

If by chance this Walgreens employee should be fired, someone should remind Walgreens corporate that there is a state law on the books that require anyone over the age of 18 to assist a police officer when requested or they can face arrest!!!!

(720 ILCS 5/31-8) (from Ch. 38, par. 31-8)
Sec. 31-8. Refusing to aid an officer.
Whoever upon command refuses or knowingly fails reasonably to aid a person known by him to be a peace officer in:
(a) Apprehending a person whom the officer is authorized to apprehend; or
(b) Preventing the commission by another of any offense, commits a petty offense.
(Source: P.A. 77-2638.)

The employee did what the law requires. Thank him when you get the chance!!!

LOL!
"Hiya boys and girls!"

Rambunctious studio audience:
"Hiya Unca Wally!"

-Leave It To Beaver-ish type music starts playing on the radio-

(We remember it was possibly the funnest and funniest night in the annals of Chicago Police radio ;^)

Good Yuks!
Good Guys!
Good-Assed Times!

Runnin', gunnin' and puttin' da heavy Chevy up on
tha sidewalk in the name of the law... And decent people were glad of it!

Thrills!
Chills!

Random and sundry m/fers
doing what they do in the urban landscape!

When coppers were big, strong, mean, hairy and ugly!
...Even the women! XD

When locking an asshole up wasn't such the intentionally bullshit riddled, counter-intuitive, Sisyphean task as it is now...

We still say they should've scanned all the old paper reports. The paper GOCR would have been a thing of beauty and simplicity on a computer screen but alas, there was money to be "misallocated" and smart m/fer's like Huberman needed a meteoric rise to legitimize the misallocation.

Anyhoo...

Wally, we hope you're out there and in good health!

That would mean you're still cashing them checks, fella!

Good Times.

This is not Fallujah. You are the police in a society that has laws and procedures, As imperfect as they maybe. if you wanted to be a Marine should have stayed. You were hired to be the police not GI Joe.

To the poster at 8:16 on 16Feb-
You sir, are exactly what's wrong with this department.

God these officers are OK. To the person who said the streets are just like Falujha... hahahahahahaha. Thank you for your service but me and lot of other guys love seeing the super molly vest guys who think we are going to war everyday. I work in a "busy" district but 99 percent of the day is handing out nonsense reports. The rest is eating lunch and laughing at guys like you. Keep it up fella I'm sure your going to need those extra magazines, flashlights, and whatever nonsense you carry around. As always be safe.

hey joker...99% of these gear queers running around in all this extra gear and carrying rifles never went to war. If you did go once...twice..three or four times that's yearssss of lugging around gear and rifles. The last thing you want to do is carry more gear. Keep eating your lunch and keep your mouth shut

Ha ha ha ha right, someone HAS to put their life in jeopardy, the same way the police have a duty to protect individual citizens?

Having said this, while your assertion is full of crap, there ARE people out there who WILL help the cops, not because the "law says so", but because their GUT says so. Don't diminish this guy's heroic actions to the level of a legal requirement. What he did is heroic. End of story. I hope I have the presence of mind to do the same thing if the situation ever requires. And if stepping in is the right thing to do, I WON'T be thinking about the legal repercussions of action versus inaction. Tool.
