- A truck rammed into a crowded Christmas market in central Berlin on Monday evening, killing nine people and injuring about 50 as it tore through tables and wooden stands. Police said the driver was arrested nearby.
Germany’s top security official said that he’s not ready to call the incident at the Christmas market an “attack,” but adds that there are many indications pointing to the truck crash as having been intentional.

I've said this before here, so my apology in advance. One summer evening in the late 1990's, three sergeants met on Congress, in the Financial District, just before the fireworks. We talked briefly about the traffic plan, then one commented how it would be easy to take out hundreds of people in the park and tie up all of downtown with that attack. I glanced up and said it would be easy to shut the city down with one small plane flown into the Sears Tower. Someone else said, two planes, one at Sears and one at the Hancock would do it.
Now, if a few cops could have a casual ten minute conversation and come up with valid threat assessments, why can't the people who at in charge of our city's safety and planning?
Our Christmas market, our subways, our New Year's celebrations, should all clearly be considered terror magnets. Why did it take an attack in Berlin to get adequate security (or at least the PERCEPTION of security) put in place today?

The only way to stop an attack or slow it down is to have carbine officers patrolling with the weapon at the ready. The politicians are so goofy about the "optics" of officers with the weapons that they fail to realize that the same "optics" could deter an attack. The weapon is very effective and very accurate while also holding large amounts of ammo. New York has officers patrolling all over with the weapon. Why can't we? Have an OT program like VRI for carbine officers or start a unit to support SWAT. Let's protect our city with the tools we have.

I saw the Daley center market on the newcast last night with a few police on foot patrol and the proclimation police were beefing up patrols downtown. Sure, of course. The first thing I thought was good luck against a semi tractor trailer careening down the street. Police are not allowed to fire at vehicles and it would not stop the damn thing anyway. But they do kind of attract attention. It seems like a pro active zone blocks around Daley Center may be a better security method and stop those that are headed in that direction for inspection. Someone said it above, play for keeps as this is not the junior varsity as Obama would have his believers think.
Secondly, Trump is right. We must control our borders and we must know who is coming here. Angela Merkel will soon find this out in the fall when she will be tossed on the world scrap heap of failed leaders by the German people. Before even drawing the weapon, scan the area and make sure there are none of those highly effective "Gun-Free Zone" stickers posted.
Take no action unless you drove a personal vehicle to get downtown. If you took public transportation or Uber, you've already violated the law by carrying a weapon.
By then it would probably be too late to take any effective action, so just do what the sworn officers are required to do. Move out of the way.

You mean the PO who fired at his partner and the partner who then fired rounds down the street at other responding officers, which made those officers think the offender was shooting at them, which then caused them to shoot that offender? Not the best example to use. Imagine how few would be stripped if the hard-chargers in 004 and elsewhere would just stop chasing hot cars and other nonsense.

Don't remember what city I was in, but they sure had their shit together..and this was years ago.......there were 3 foot deep round holes around the perimeter...., with "canisters" down in the holes.....as i watched, they popped the tops of these open, removed the canisters, put them on the truck, and two men then inserted a 6 foot pole into the hole.....and these holes were about 3 feet apart.....so every 3 feet, you had a 3 foot tall post blocking out any possible vehicle getting in. Now I know you couldn't do this everywhere, but maybe around City Hall, Daley Center, Millenium Park???? At least TRY to keep this city safe??

A few years back a semi-truck driver by the name of Wells fell asleep while exiting the Ryan in Chinatown. His truck took out a bus stop, and a CTA Elevated station killing 2 and injuring 20 more. (Oh wait, injuring 19 more. One "victim" was observed on video climbing under the debris after the accident had occurred). That was an accident!
Neither the bus stop nor the structure of the CTA facility stopped that semi from rolling up the escalator. Perhaps the CPD bicycles are made of some space age metal that can stop the inertia of a semi-truck, or is it the City just regards you as expendable?

Won't someone please think of the children? We need to:
* Ban assault vehicles.
* Ban Semi-tractor trailers from being owned by terrorists
* Require licensing, mandatory insurance, testing and training before allowing anyone to drive a vehicle.
* Require a background check before being able to get licensed, tested, or even start the vehicle.
* Speed needs to be regulated. Why does anyone need to travel more than 5MPH?
* Fuel capacity needs to be regulated. No one needs to carry 200 gal of fuel.
* Vehicles need automatic pedestrian detection and avoidance systems implemented.
* Retrofit all old trucks with new safety systems.
* Keep the keys hidden to trucks when not actually driving them.
* We need "smart trucks" so they can only be operated by the intended operator.
* We need to restrict who can work on and repair trucks to prevent abuse and misuse of the vehicle.
* We need laws to prohibit trucks from driving on sidewalks or over people, etc.
That'll do it! See - just saved the Shitty from spending millions on bike and beat cops! Now we can give all that money to a rightful cause (defending illegal aliens from deportation by Trump).

In Germany, strict privacy laws prevent showing the full picture and name of the suspect they are looking for!
