Shootings Down?

But homicides still up - wonder at that one.

Heard a report on NewsRadio this evening about shootings being down 40% in the Shotspotter Districts (007, 011). Can anyone verify?

Is the Department giving credit to the Shotspotter company, even though the system is (according to e-mail) buggy as hell and down for unexplained reasons 25-to-40% of the time?

Has there been a weapon arrest directly attributable to the system yet? We figured if there was, it'd be all over the news.

How many shooting and/or shooting homicide arrests were the result of cameras? Apparently not enough to offset the numbers since their inception.

It's nice that the Shotspotter can detect the direction of shots, but it still can't miraculously drop cops from the heavens at the precise location, at the precise time and arrest the shooter before the POS has time to flee. So, if you pardon the pun, it is a shot in the dark for the Shotspotter to actually be credited with an arrest for it's technology.

Obviously the system goes berserk during holiday celebratory acts.

I am a sergeant from an outside unit and I can only comment about the times I have been in 007 and that when the shot-spotter gave an address shell casing have been recovered. With that being said it does take the guess work out of the location but it still can't tell you who the shooter was.

Hey SCC,

Here's what we've tallied for those two districts:

007

Jan 2016 - 24 shot, 6 fatally (1 PO-involved)
Feb 2016 - 26 shot, 4 fatally
Jan 2017 - 30 shot, 6 fatally
Feb 2017 - 20 shot, 2 fatally

011

Jan 2016 - 51 shot, 6 fatally
Feb 2016 - 26 shot, 4 fatally
Jan 2017 - 53 shot, 14 fatally
Feb 2017 - 19 shot, 1 fatally

February is ALWAYS the quietest month of the year which makes for a horrible, albeit politically advantageous comparison point.

Off topic: Cook county and Kim Foxx are releasing inmates who they deem as non-violent offenders. “One person was in for retail theft and couldn’t pay the $300 they needed to walk. . . . Another person broke into their friend’s house and stole some shoes,” Foxx told the Chicago Sun-Times. “An alternative to jail makes sense.” So basically a thief and a home invader/burglar are going to be set free.

The shot spotter is the same as cameras on the street. They are great for information but how many arrests are the result of technology? In 007 and 011, everything depends on a car responding to the scene and hopefully the offender is still there. Without a description, can officers search everyone at the scene? Technology can help but we still need officers on the street.

3/02/2017 10:49:00 AM

I heard a story on the news, had to smile. The anecdotal take-away is this: "President Trump said murders in Chicago were up in February 2017 over February 2016, but the fact is, murders are down". All I could think was, of course. Report fewer murders than actually committed in February 2016, to make the situation look better than it actually is, and then when February 2017 beats it, pad February 2016's numbers retroactively, to make 2017's higher murder count look better than it actually is. It's the Chicago way, right?

The richest thing was hearing Raht comment in advance of President Trump's speech, essentially saying that he's been ineffective, and the results will speak for themselves. (that's right, 50 years of Democrat rulers plowing big cities into the ground, and 5 weeks into President Trump's term and he's "ineffective") Why don't you go build a park or a bike lane or something?

Shields writes:

“Dean is failing to network in Springfield with state reps and senators to protect our interests.”

How does an uneducated, violence prone(and proud of it)lady or girl slapping young gentlemen purchase that blink, buy those sleds, and buy their Mother's Homes?

Some might be rappers or hip hop artists like Chance The Rapper(Congrats young man)but the others with no viable skill, money from WIC or whatever it is now, and that stack of $50s that makes everyone in line stare in disbelief that their money is directly paying for this young gentleman's living expenses.

Things that make you go.......WTF, U Mother fuckin piece of shit?

Look at Amendment 4. 13 other bills have to pass first. 11 of these bills we are not interested in. This bill isn't close to passing yet Deano sends out an email blast like its almost here. Our, I repeat our pension fund was shorted 173 million in 2016 alone. It will be over 200 million each year until the Casino comes. This is all Dean's fault. This is a fact. I will not vote for Shields and will never ever vote for Graham or anyone ever affiliated with the Donahue/Dougherty/Ag-u-liar Shitty-Wide team! Tin foil boy Brock is a no go too. So only a couple of days to vote. Who would you suggest?

There is no such thing as "gun violence." This was a ploy by community groups to get in the press with their own agendas. People are violent and immature and want to fight or beat up vulnerable people. Crimes such as stalking and hate crimes are not prosecuted and this is why these situations escalate into shootings and murders and the police get blamed for not doing anything until it becomes a murder.

Isn't residency required by state statute? You can't negotiate a contract to change a state statute. Don't you actually have to bribe, l mean lobby the state legislature to change, delete or enact a state law? Guess I'm missing something but I did live in the city because I knew it was a condition of employment when I was hired. I no longer live there and realize that I was born there and didn't know that life is much better outside of Chicago and not being under rahm's rule is a good thing!

It's a city ordinance allowed because Chicago has home rule
If it were a state law all the cities in Illinois would have to obey it and residency

It is a state law that applies to cities with population over 250k. There are many laws that only apply to Chicago using this method.
