Crime is Down!
But only if you compare it to 2016 - an aberration year:
- Shootings are down by 14 percent this year compared to the first six months of 2016, according to Chicago Police statistics.
As of Friday night, 1,752 people had been shot in the city during the first half of this year, leaving 309 dead, according to data maintained by the Chicago Sun-Times.
In a statement issued early Saturday, the police department touted June as the fourth straight month with a reduction in shootings compared to the same time last year. It ended with 396 people shot, 74 fatally, Sun-Times data shows.
Notice what the Slum Times is doing? They keep saying the word "shootings" and building off of that:
- 396 shot, 74 dead in June
- 1752 shot, 309 dead in 2017
So why does HeyJackass.com have these numbers?
- 399 shot, 83 dead in June
- 1779 shot, 339 dead in 2017
Because HeyJackass is counting all homicides - stranglings, beatings, burnings, vehicular homicides, etc. So all of those numbers are suspect if they're only using gun related homicides.
And why is Navarro only going back to 2016? Because Chicago is still above the historical lows of the earlier part of this decade. It was only a few years ago that Chicago recorded under 500 killings. Part of that was the McCarthy "re-classification" bullshit, but the other part was....there were actually less killings.
This is (yet again) why we concentrate on the long term trends - because the short term trends are going to make you look like an idiot:

This is exactly why the Department claims one month, "Crime is down over the same period as last year" for a particular weekend, then switch to "It's lower than 2016" while ignoring the double digit increases compared to 2013, 2014 and 2015. Every year can't have a warm January that accounts for 57 homicides like 2016 did.

What this city needs is a proven leader who can think on his feet and reclassify homicides into death investigations. If only the twerp murder mayor could convene a blue ribbon committee to select such a candidate...
So the question that all of this raises is: Why? In the past the Media has relied on the HeyJackass stats as and for Homicides. The Media has less credibility when it pulls this game on the public. Did City Hall personally approach the Sun-Times and ask them to tone it down? To simply list Shooting Deaths, and ignore all the other types of mayhem that cause homicides is to misrepresent the truth! The other night one citizen used his vehicle to kill another human being. Are we to believe that the victim in this incident is less dead than someone shot to death? And this incident clearly was with intent, since it followed an argument between the two, making this case a homicide that was also a Murder. All Murders are Homicides, but not all Homicides are Murders. The Sun-Times is playing word games, and diminishing their own credibility. And that is why you will see newspapers seldom read by fewer and fewer people under the age of 60. Is this shaving of the facts supposed to be the elevated art of professional journalism? I'm still wondering if any of those "death investigations" from 2016 have been reclassified as homicides yet?
If you really want to see a reduction in numbers, count only the shootings/killings that happen during daylight hours! You know, when the murders are probably sleeping and the people working to support them are up.

Going by per capita number of shootings, Chicago is quite safe.
They should just give the number of people who weren't shot in the city it would make it sound so much better. Today over 2,000,000 people didn't get shot in the city. See how much nicer that sound.

Sorry, Navarro is just dumb, Cesario is a box of rocks. A box of rocks has no value at all. Is he still twiddling his thumbs down at the 911 center?
I can remember a very smart soul saying numbers can say anything you want if you torture them long enough. Can't remember where I heard that.
