Michigan Profiling?
- An African-American woman says she’s a victim of racial profiling in St. Clair Shores.
Rai Lanier, 27, of Grosse Pointe was arrested after police ran her license plate and found she was wanted on an outstanding ticket.
Lanier parked illegally in a handicapped space waiting for carry-out from a Buffalo Wild Wings in St. Clair Shores. That’s when police approached her — and after running her license found the warrant for her arrest.
“There was a strong odor of marijuana and the driver admitted there was marijuana in the vehicle and indeed there was,” says Police Chief Todd Woodcox. “She was arrested for warrants — for tickets that she failed to pay.”
She's parked in a handicapped spot without any sort of plates or stickers...and she's surprised that the police dared to run her plate? NEWSFLASH! If we see a car parked in a handicap spot around here, we pull out the ticket book, dust it off, and we write it. The only three tickets we write any more are City Sticker, Fire Hydrant and Handicap Parker. That's it.
And after running the plate, if a warrant pops, then cops are pretty much obligated to check it out. They didn't profile anyone - they spotted an asshole to lazy to walk, parked in a post that they aren't supposed to be in, and a computer check revealed a warrant issued by a Court, signed by a judge, for a violation passed into law by the elected legislature, for a past due ticket that someone was too arrogant to pay for.
Does that about sum it up?

Yes the police profiled her.
The profile she fit was a lazy miserable stoned slob too lazy and too stupid to park in a non handicapped spot. Race got nothing to do with it. Sex got nothing to do with it. She was profiled as an Asshole.

I love the WC who always wanted you to articulate PC for running the license plate. They would always say that you needed a reason to have run the plate in the first place. Newsflash. You don't need a reason. You are the police and that's the reason. License plates (and their registration information) are property of The Illinois Secretery of State and any 4th amendment claim would have to be lodged by them, NOT the vehicle owner.

Why are they always in the Handicap spot or have a "man" circling the lot blocking the turns, spaces and entry ways? Why do the social norms escape them? Why are they always a special case - "this is what had happened tho".

Had the same incident happened in Chicago, Rahm would've immediately given the out-of-towner $5 million dollars and shook his head at the insensitive actions of the CPD (making double-sure that his press corp got his reaction out to 'the community.')
Why write tickets for city stickers? Who cares. Besides, tickets need to be conserved due to a "shortage", remember.

I would have to add parked in a bus lane to the ticket writing list. I use to hate walking in the middle of the street to get on the bus. Drivers out there are crazy
