Big Whoops

This is probably one reason Chicago requires a cop to be on movie/television sets:
  • Indiana State Police say they're investigating after a police officer in the western Indiana city of Crawfordsville fired a gunshot at a movie actor portraying a bank robber.

    No one was hurt.

State police say Crawfordsville police were responding to a report of a possible robbery at Backstep Brewing Co. on Tuesday evening when they encountered actor Jim Duff.

Duff was wearing a ski mask and carrying a gun while leaving the brewery with his back to the officers. Police told him to drop the gun, but Duff turned toward them. An officer fired a shot that missed Duff.

Police say Duff dropped the gun, pulled off his mask and told officers they were on a movie set.

Police say the production company and the brewery didn't notify them or other businesses before filming.
Poor marksmanship was a good thing this time.

Lights! Camera! Action! ACTION!

We need reality in this scene!!! Use REAL BULLETS!!!

Now THAT is a MOVIE!!! Cut!

No more special effects! We're using real bullets from now on!

When do we start filming in Chicago?? We can save a lot of money just driving around and videoing the streets. (Just like they used to do in the Silent Movies - drive to wherever a big fire was and then shoot some "Epic" film right in front of the real fire.)

Wasn't there a Lucy Show episode where the robbers pretended to be a movie production shooting a scene at the bank with Lucy and Mr. Mooney bumbling and foiling the robbery?

Glad the Officers missed. It would have been devastating for the officers if they had killed him.

Now Retired...

I've worked, off duty, on many movie and TV productions, behind and in front of the cameras. We had safety protocols for simulated gunfire that included closing the set and making notification to the local zone. We also had car chases, crashes, falls and all sorts of stunts. The fire special effects for the movie BACKDRAFT was up for an Academy Award.

I got to fire an AK47 and a Thompson submachine gun. With Blanks of course, it was a rush.

12:32 & 01:35 - There was a similar plot with Andy Taylor/Barney Fife. The bank was the real goal of a film crew in Mayberry.

Whoever was responsible for the "movie set" and security is to blame. How do police show up and nobody stops or confronts them that they are filmimng a scene. Talk about low budget. Hope they at least got the real police and shooting on tape. Might be the best scene of the movie. And glad no one was hurt of course.

Seems they always have a cousin or friend filming on the cellaphone.

Not the first time this has happened. Think a few years back a similar incident occurred with someone getting shot. May killed.

In early 1980s a similar thing happened on Milwaukee Ave just south of North Ave. Copper sees chase and gunfight, gets involved. Fortunately he was Academy trained so no one was hit.

Even blanks can break off like here to Bruce Lee's son Brandon:

Brandon Lee, Michael Massee and the ‘curse’ of The Crow

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/films/0/brandon-lee-michael-massee-and-the-curse-of-the-crow/

excerpt:
Emotionally intense though the scene was, its technical demands were fairly straightforward, especially given the elaborate set-pieces – one a warehouse shootout with hundreds of blanks raining down – that director Alex Proyas had already captured. One of the four thugs, chosen almost at random on the night, was to raise a Magnum .44 at Draven as he entered obliviously through the front door carrying the couple’s groceries. A single blank was to be fired, and a squib simultaneously let off in the shopping bag, to release blood over the actor playing Draven as he tumbled to the floor.

That actor was Brandon Lee, 28-year-old son of the legendary kung fu star Bruce Lee. As he fell backwards from the blast – not forwards, as they’d all planned – it took long moments before the others on set realised that something had gone hideously wrong. It took a lot longer – weeks of investigation, in fact – for anyone to work out why.

Depending on the accuracy of that shot, it 'could of been' the Medical Examiner that gave the call, "Cut, That's a Wrap!"
