More Wasted Money

  • The chipped gray viaduct that bisects the main drag of Jefferson Park was bathed in purple light Tuesday night, teasing an intricate LED display that could become permanent if it scores enough votes in the 45th Ward participatory budgeting process this fall.

The ballot, which asks residents to decide how Ald. John Arena (45th) should spend his 2018 discretionary budget of $1.3 million, will be released by Friday, according to Arena's staff. But on Tuesday, before the full catalog of potential infrastructure projects becomes available to voters, volunteers ignited a shimmering preview of one of their voting options.

Neighbors have spent years pleading for Jefferson Park's multiple crumbling railroad underpasses to be rehabilitated, according to a Dominika Miller, a Jefferson Park resident who volunteered to help the alderman's office draw up the ballot.
Shouldn't this cost be borne, at least partly, by the railroads? It's their overpass. Second, get a load of what this is going to look like:

This is coming out of his $1.3 million "discretionary fund," which means money to vote the way that Rahm wants him to vote - a legalized bribe that he can use to snow the citizens he's about to screw with a few hundred Section 8 apartments just up the block.

How about lighting up the shadows instead?

Beter yet, find the worst street corners and light them up like a night time football game?
Extra lights on all four corners a d four security cameras to watch over the area.
In a couple of years, every street will be lit up like noon on a June day.
Who knows, it just might reduce crime?

Hide the fact that the viaducts are falling apart by shining ugly lights on them?
It won't work in daylight.

OT Somewhat. But, since this thread is about neighborhood news, I couldn't resist. Read the story about some SJW's defacing the Statue of Christopher Columbus in Arrigo Park; In the OLD Italian neighborhood. The 3 get spotted by the good citizens and try to take off, 1 gets grabbed and held for 012 to scoop up. I so envision Joey Bag-a-Donuts, and his crew, having a smoke or singing Doo-Wop on a stoop when the unfortunate SJW's come brining their bullshit into the WRONG neighborhood........ Bada-Bing, Bada-Boom! I think I just fell in love with Chicago again.

The Police Dept needs a UCR code for reports made when a chunk of concrete falls from a crumbling overpass and strikes a moving car,I did one years ago at the CTA Red line overpass at Hollywood a chunk of concrete fell and went thru a sunroof and missed the people in the car.

This ain't no disco. It's like shining a red
spotlight on a log of shit and saying you have
prime rib. Let the railroad fix its own eyesores.
$1.3 Million in discretionary? Bullshit! Chicago
ain't broke, he money is in the wrong hands.
The crooked Aldercreature and the Mayor need to
find other employment.
BTW, that purple light gives off a real ghetto vibe.
Great for tourism.

Hey speaking of Light! I called ALDERMAN ARENA'S office over a period of 7 months to get a street light fixed and they couldn't. The light would go on for a while but be off most of the time. They said the electrical inspector kept coming out and said the light was on. After numerous calls explaining this to ARENA'S office they said it was the electrical departments failure. So I said since I keep calling maybe ARENA should call someone in the electrical department personally. The staffer's response was maybe I should come to the ARENA'S ward meeting to bring this problem up! Then after saying why would should I have to come to a meeting just for a streelight she said, Is there anything else I can help you with today?" After making some more phone calls to the City, I got someone in CDOT, explained the problem and the streetlight was fixed the next day. ARENA is totally useless.

On the Arenafor45.com blog from Jul 2017 the Six Corners Association placed a baby grand piano in the "people space" on the public way at 4042 N Milwaukee for people to play. How warm and fuzzy. How about some more police there with all the $hitheads walking around instead.

Arena must be completely brain dead. This overpass has been crumbling for the last 10 years - like totally falling apart - and everyone in the area knows that. Why would you waste money putting neon lighting on crumbling infrastructure?

Oh, I know, because he's a bleeding heart liberal democrat who is going to "save" his ward from segregation and somehow these neon lights will take everyone's mind off the fact that he's plunking down Section 8 housing right in the middle of their neighborhood.

Least we never forget Ald. Arena's post during the Presidential Campaign
"I am not ready to cead this country to the racist, classist, knuckle dragging and generally sub human puddle of
DNA that makes up the base of Trump supporters. We have made too much progress since scrubbing the Bush idiocy from the Oval office."
Talk about a bigot Heh Alderman say it forget it , write it regret it. and get a spell checker, better yet get OUT

I liked the way the streets we're years ago. Wide open. Easy travel. The concrete flower boxes bike lanes and anything they could think of that we're put into the traveling lanes terrible mistake. Purple lights on crumbling concrete great idea. Why didn't I think of that.

That rehab project should be entirely on the railroad.
The city doesn't/didn't build the viaducts since the RR has the right of way to the tracks.
Money must be flowing in from the RR and their budget doesn't see a need to make repairs...unless it's like a southside Metra flyover.
The city allows certain decrepit structures to stand, that's obvious.
Rahm uses TIF to rehab private owned structures when it's part of a south or west side community economic revitalization.
If the city had a guy to rebuilds viaducts, then they'd be fixed. So again, it's obvious the city has no control over the entire RR structure just the under portions.
If any indication exists, its that poor old Jeff Park is destined to become another slum.

The city will fine you if you don't cut your weeds, shovel your snow or even plant a tree on the parkway, depending on which community has money to actually pay fines and so the RR gets a pass.
Rahm and the loyal 48 AlderThieves allow community groups to adorn viaducts with cultural racebait murals and even supply the materials.
Section8'Arena is merely placating some of his undecided base, that's all.
He will likely turn over the viaduct to some unwashed-unemployable antifa artist group to do what they wish to the site.

A million bucks is a lot of mostly unaccountable coin for 48 loyalist AlderThieves.
Too much room for corruption and expect Rahm to raise that fund plus a pay raise.

This is absolute lunacy. This like going to a doctor when you have malignant melanoma and the doctor suggests a good suntan will cover it up. So what do you in the daytime when you walk through the viaduct, do they give you sun glasses so you dont see the crumbling concrete. Dam get some masons to fix the viaduct before it caves in. And while the alderman is at it spend the money on all the broken sidewalks, gutters, streets instead of bullshit islands and bump outs on Milwaukee ave that will not be used. Hundreds of thousands of tax dollars pissed away. And the same can be said for the bike lanes on Elston you rarely see anyone using them.
