Soda Tax Done?

  • The controversial Cook County pop tax is poised to fall flat.

After months of wrangling, a “bipartisan” deal has come together to end the penny-per-ounce tax on soda and other sugary drinks in advance of a vote on the matter that is still scheduled for next week.

The veto-proof deal delivers a major setback to Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, who on Thursday said the revenue from the tax was needed to avoid major cuts to the public health and safety sectors.

Two more commissioners, Jesus “Chuy” Garcia, D-Chicago, Preckwinkle’s floor leader, and Stanley Moore, D-Chicago, who were once in favor of the tax, acknowledged on Friday they have since changed their stance.

Another commissioner, Dennis Deer, D-Chicago, who joined the board after the tax was approved, also said he will vote against it. The move follows an announcement Thursday from Commissioner John Daley, D-Chicago, that he would no longer support the tax.
Sounds like Prickwrinkle might be a lame duck all of the sudden. Don't put it past her to play "slash and burn" with county government though - which, quite frankly, we don't see as a downside. Now is the time for serious discussions of reducing the size of the Cook County leviathan that is killing Illinois.

Too late. I have learned the way of the Lake County shopping trip.
And it is good.

Today, Cook lost the sales tax on my $150 grocery purchase.
(Rahm got nothing for the seven plastic bags my groceries were put into.)
It also lost when I bought $32 in gasoline.
Not to mention the $39 birthday celebration lunch with my friend.

Zero dollars spent today in Cook County. It was well worth the eighteen minute drive from the city.

Dear media outlets. Feel free to see how many directors are in the cook county sheriffs office now compared to 15 years ago. There were maybe 5-10 directors making 6 figures and now there are about 60-70. Anyone care to wonder why the county is broke?

From what I have heard that even though it is repealed the County is going to continue the Pop Tax till Dec 1st (or another 6 weeks) so that they can figure out what other Tax Base they can harvest once the Pop Tax is Gone...

So they are going to collect the tax for the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Why stop there? There are many other taxes to eliminate and allow the peasants to live and breathe. Then take a axe to the bloat and fat of the budget. Eliminate redundant positions, remove people that make six figures but in charge of shit, tell Dart to go fuck himself and get rid of the policy team and a few hundred attorneys. Start there. Show some real leadership and this will inspire people. This is great news.

The incompetence of Senior "Chuey" is in full view with this flip-flop. He should NOT be considering a run against "Da Lil Guy", so the question is : Who will run against Rahm? I am beginning to believe that anyone considering a run against Rahm is waiting for the outcome of the McDonald Trial. Officer Van Dyke will be on trial, but so will Rahm for his concealment of the video. How much damage will Rahm sustain? Meanwhile, this "Revolt" by the County Board is a direct affront to Preckwinkle's Authoritarian Rule, and should serve as a model for the City Council. The magnitude of the voter's anger is reflected in how they are leaving Cook County and shopping outside of Chicago and Cook County. Even before the sugar tax people were shopping outside of Chicago for gasoline and to avoid the bag tax. The next election cycle, and the outcome of the Amazon deal will impact this area for decades to come. Remember, the Amazon deal could be to Rahm what failing to get Da Lympics was to Daley. Stay Safe. Baby "G"

Sugar = White Death
Could it be that John Daley was persuaded
to change his mind by a campaign contribution
from the industry? Makes you wonder.
The soda industry is on its back, at least in
America, and has resorted to selling bottled
water, which carries a higher profit margin.
Remember the Coke ads of the 60s & 70s?
It was always the cool person enjoying their
product. Now the cool person is pictured with
a bottle of designer water.
Reminds me of the pre-Castro Godfather scene
in which all the corrupt leaders held a meeting and
decided which capitalistic companies would have a
monopoly in Cuba. A solid gold telephone was passed
around the table, everyone aware that it was a bribe.
Our question is what did Daley receive to change his mind.

The FBI Counterterrorism Division warned about the potential violence that could come from members of “Black Identity Extremists” (BIE), according to a document obtained by Foreign Policy.

The Aug. 3 document warns of the potential violence that members of the BIE movement could possibly perform against American law enforcement officers, Foreign Policy reported Friday.

“The FBI assesses it is very likely Black Identity Extremist (BIE) perceptions of police brutality against African Americans spurred an increase in premeditated, retaliatory lethal violence against law enforcement and will very likely serve as justification for such violence,” the document read. Foreign Policy notes that the document was marked for official use.

Too late Cook county. You will get as little of my hard earned dollar as possible. We have been shopping out of Cook county for over a year. We don't miss it at all. We look forward to our Sunday morning drive to shop. Unfortunately we are held captive here because of the jobs we have. It will happen... all the animals will eventually run the zoo. This county has put the burden on the backs of the hard working and law abiding families. Just wait until we are gone. Just wait until you don't have our tax dollars anymore.

Exactly what services does Cook County provide for your average Chicago homeowner? They don't police my neighborhood. They don't pave my streets. They don't haul my garbage. They don't provide my water. They no longer house most criminals. They no longer approve charges and prosecute a lot of felons.

Just what exactly do they do?

Hello, off-topic Narcan.
You are protected by the so-called
"Good Samaratian" law. In most of these
cases, friends call 911 and will report person
not breathing and will tell you what drug (they
THINK) he used. If it's straight heroin, you have
a reasonable chance of the Narcan working. If
heroin was mixed with fentanyl or U-47700, you
are fighting an uphill battle and he may need a
Narcan DRIP in the hospital to survive.
In any case, it's not your fault wheather the Narcan
works or not. That's all medical and toxicology
reports will bear it out.
As for the MRSA, you guys wear blue gloves anyway,
right? To be safe, buy yourself a size larger and double-
glove like hospital personnel do when making chemo.

O.K., O.K. I'll re-write my statement about
John Daley.
(Like Tiger Woods) he was found in a brand
new Cadillac at night parked under the L,
still breathing with the engine running and
his foot on the brake. Some people say the
Caddy still had the price sticker on the side
window, but that has not been confirmed by
CPD. Police did find several open containers
inside the vehicle.
Daley told police he was in diabetic shock and
needed some sugar, pronto!

Spoken like the true insect thinker you are.

The "we need more revenue" mantra, as obviously bullshit-speak for "we are hogs and we're always hungry" parasitic scum grifters are always preaching, attempts to deny their very nature....which is greed, sloth and inbred chicanery.

My father once told me....son, if we taxpayers actually benefit at the rate of 25 cents for every dollar paid in taxes, that is a good year....".....that was decades ago and it still is true.

Chop the waste, corruption and vote buying, not the trees......

The Trump election proved that the citizens have had enough. Not is up to you to show the current crop of thieves that you will not stand for it any more. They are very vulnerable and scared right now. The sugar tax was a tax to far, they are on the run. Target the recent real estate tax raise and bag tax. Keep them off balance and afraid of coming at you. If not they will just find another revenue source that will cost you even more than the sugar tax. Next time it will be a tax you cannot avoid by changing buying and shopping habits. Keep them on defense, don't allow them to go on offense. The dollars you are saving are yours not theirs.

So they are going to collect the tax for the Thanksgiving Holiday.
10/07/2017 12:30:00 AM

Not from me, they won't. I'm much happier shopping outside the city.
There are more choices in the grocery stores and they're cleaner and the crews are nicer.
I make sure to buy gas while I'm outside the county, saving that tax gouge, too.
I won't be shopping in the city at all, not before 01 Dec and not after, either.

The problem is, they get that the tax didn't work and that people weren't going to stand for it when they only raked in $300k. But what they didn't get was WHY people are upset. It's not because taxpayers just don't like taxes or that they're "greedy". It's because of the lengths to which taxpayers have been PUSHED to still be able to afford their TAXES, all while receiving almost NOTHING in return.

How many have had to cut back on simple stuff like Internet, cable, and phone service? Skimp on food purchases, let alone the occasional treat at a fancy restaurant? How about clothing and household items? A new(er) car to simply get around? Vacations? A movie or show? Simple freaking entertainment and diversions, in exchange for hard work and living responsibly.

But instead, the life of taxpayers has been negatively transformed by ALL the various and sundry taxes that have popped up and increased EVERYWHERE, on top of stagnant or falling wages. When times are good, people don't really notice all their tax dollars going down the drain and getting nothing in exchange. But when we're ALL forced to cut back on the things that make life slightly more enjoyable and bearable, things that we've EARNED through our HARD WORK and belt-tightening, all while the waste at the city, county, and state level goes unchecked and continues it's bloat?

No, it's beyond "taxpayers are fed up". It's that taxpayers now realize what's going on, and they're narrowing in on the ROOT of the problem. Repealing this silly tax only shines a light on the sickness these bureaucrats have infected our lives with, and they can't backpedal as fast as an avalanche of angry taxpayers.

So, when you read the article, didn't this sentence kind of jump out at you?

"When someone confronted them, they sped away on bicycles, but one tumbled off his bike and was held by the witness until Monroe District police officers got there and placed the 30-year-old under arrest, police said."

There is no "Monroe District" and hasn't been for years! Sure hope you're not a cop and didn't realize that. Wood + Monroe = Near West.
