Nice Marathon Planning Ed

Just when you think the Department could get any less competent:
  • Working the marathon detail today. About an hour into the race, majority of officers related that their radios were chirping and needed new batteries. Several of the salt trucks used to block intersections broke down and had to be towed out. Some boss screaming about that he is not afraid to spar an officer. What a circus!
And we got e-mails outlining how the Chief of Patrol released some order at midnight Friday violating the Contracts by sending bid officers and sergeants out of District instead of volunteers.

In any event, who is the "boss" who was screaming about how he wasn't afraid to SPAR an officer? No boss should be afraid of issuing discipline if an order or policy has been violated.

FYI: If you feel the need to tell everyone how unafraid you are, you're probably afraid....and most likely incompetent.

How’s about you sit the office down and tell them they make the worst decision in their lives when they joined CPD. Shit move out of state and get a job for Amazon

It was bad,, dead batteries, no barricades available, missing officers on posts. I worked it 2 years ago and it was nothing like that. Some boss kept yelling over the air about the officers watching the marathon. I get it, it's a big event but some officers paid no attention to the crowd or what's behind them, just focused on the runners. Did we forget about the Boston marathon bombing?

the 005th district got hosed. they had no transportation for us so we had to work in district at a later start time for 10 fucking hours when we were absolutely not needed anywhere! so when all the people detailed to the marathon were released we were stuck doing a full tour on are rdo, what a waste of money.

I don’t think is a violation of the contract as long as they report to and check off at their assigned district.

I always thought it was a ridiculous idea to put a stranglehold on a city so some weekend joggers can join professional marathoners in a "race". No problem with me if you pull the police and let these "athletes" fend for themselves with private security/traffic control. Better yet, put them all in Grant park and let them run around in circles for 26 miles.

It wasn’t a violation because those bid officers were rdo cancelled, which means they could be utilized anywhere at anytime including beyond two hour start time differential.

It was Eric Carter of course yelling that officers needed to be out of their vehicles. To add to it, some of the cancelled tact teams had roll call at 0430 at hq with everyone else only to learn they shouldn't be there, that they would be working with OCD and should've had a briefing with them. Well OCD never showed and they never saw or heard from them out there.

Not a cop but, I've attended the Chicago Marathon several years in a row as a spectator. On Sunday, for a good 45 minutes, I was on the west side of the street just past the 1-mile left sign. There were two officers, very young that I guess were supposed to keep the crowd back from encroaching on the street. Most of the time, they were watching the runners. A lady cop in a white shirt came by and told everyone to move back from the street and on the curb. These two just stood around and let the crowd move right back into the street. It seemed like they were afraid to ask people to move back. If they're afraid of that crowd, God help them when they have to deal with gang-bangers.

Then there was a guy in a blue t-shirt with a badge around his neck (I guess he was a police officer?) that came by once and asked 2-3 people to move back a bit. After that, he went a block away from the runners by a police truck and was jaw-jackin with his buddy (some random street dude, definitely not an officer), never even looked at the runners or the crowd. I can't say he was completely useless, since he did approach the crowd once.

Pretty sad effort compared to the races in the past few years.

How about you pay me for the 12 you ordered me to work. Not to mention working 11am to 11pm on Saturday and returning at am Sunday for the marathon. Our radios should be on the "Antique Road Show". Everyone knows they don't work in the subway or in buildings. I bet I can buy one on Amazon that does.

I just heard from an officer in a south side district that we still have at least one SOLID boss on this job who actually gives a fuck about his officers. Too bad the assholes running the "circus" aren't all like you understanding how much everyone "loves" being forced to work their rdo and then get treated even more like shit!

I was told that once I arrived at my assigned intersection to use the blue wooden barricades to close it. No barricades were available and a sergeant pulled up with a half roll of crime scene tape to use. He said do your best kid. In line with this topic...if you are a PPO that was assigned to the marathon on the bikes and your RDO was cancelled, you are entitled to get paid/earn comp time for the ENTIRE day, not just from 1400-1800hrs! A PPO came back to the district and told us that the sergeant in charge of them told them basically, "Since it's the start of a new week, your day off isn't cancelled this will be one of your regular work days. When you get back to your unit, pick another day you want off this week. Oh yeah, here's your slip for 4 hours." GTFOH!! Please get another slip and redo it so you don't get screwed!!

Or when half the ppos had to be at HQ and the ither half at the academy and they called off the list of people that were told to be at HQ at the academy and vice versa. Whoever made the order literally had a 50% chance of getting it right if they just guessed and they fucked it up. Total incompetence. Was quite the shit show.

Worked one of these and put in a seniority grievance few years back. Got 4 hours. supervisors were willing to gamble four hours to protect a side piece that wanted to stay in district. plus they thought I wouldn't have the brains or balls to see it and grieve it. Four hours isn't a lot to be able to juggle sheets. Bosses screamed and thought I was being petty.

What a cluster fuck the marathon is. The entire downtown business area is essentially inaccessible for much of the day because of it. They need to really rethink the course, moving it to more of the neighborhoods where there are fewer people inconvenienced.

Better yet, run the entire race through the south and west sides. Anyone not getting killed, wounded, or robbed gets a medal.

Could the Department get less competent? Years ago, my partner and I were assigned to follow the marathon, and keep traffic from running over the stragglers. When we got in the squad (First District, of course)the tank was on empty and the race was already underway. We ran out of gas within about 5 minutes, and the stragglers had to dodge traffic running up their asses w/o our help. Been retired 25 years, nothing has changed except you've got less backup from the Department and more cameras taking your picture.
