NYPD Work is Dead
- NYPD officers are now required to share their full names and ranks with people who they stop on the street, due to a new law that took effect Friday. Officers will hand out business cards as part of the "Right to Know" act.
The cards have information on the back about how to file a complaint against an officer and even obtain body camera video. Officers must also inform people of their right to refuse some searches.
The City Council passed the law in January after four years of battling back and forth with the NYPD. The police union says the law will discourage officers from addressing crime.
With all the information available out on the internet, it'll be a cold day in Hell before we hand out a business card to some asshole on the street and basically invite them to our neighborhood.

No Police Officer anywhere should be required to give ANYONE their last name. In the age of the Internet an ill intentioned person could do too much harm to an Officer or his family if he/so chose to do so. No Police Officer should be required to display their last name on their uniform for the same reason. If a person wants to file a complaint or write a Letter of Commendation he/she can use the star number which is prominently displayed on the Officers uniform, he/she can use the outside number prominently displayed on the exterior of the car or the beat tag also prominently displayed on the exterior of the car. The only time someone should see an Officers last name is at the bottom of a Complaint and then only when the Officer signs that complaint.
You want to know something funny? In Illinois the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commossionof the Supreme Court of Illionois personnel will tell you that they do not have identity themselves when they answer the phone. They have even refused to. For the people that don’t know these are the people that take complaints against attorneys. Give it a try the number is312-565-2600.

You are worried about who has to pay for the cards? I think the bigger worry is the whole idea of having to reveal our whole identity to criminals. They’ll probably issue few first cards and then it becomes a part of the uniform and you have to use your uniform allowance subsequently get additional cards. Then you have COPA snoops go talk to people you interacted with and ask if you gave them your business card and if they say no you are screwed. The job really has become amazingly ridiculous.

As a retired CPD and now a private investigator, I can tell you that it is very easy to find someone when you have their first and last name. There are public web sites, both free and paid that carry a tremendous amount of information on people. I thought that what badge and shield numbers were for and the last name on name tags.
I thought that I was a pretty aggressive cop in my younger days. I enjoyed the work and did my best not to step over the line, although it was hard not to at times. But, if I was working the streets in these times, aggressive police work would be out of the question. Inmates know officers badge numbers and are given full names along with personal information too. OTOH..... if one buys their own cards there's, unfortunately, a greater chance of typo's being made during the printing process whereas if the Dept supplies them the Vanecko Printing Company will more than likely get the name and number correct.
Soon every CPD officer will get a QR code to affix on all uniforms so any Joe Q. Public can scan an officer’s info into their cell phone.

When you go to the COPA page, there's a link to compliment an officer. Has any compliment ever been forwarded through for inclusion in ones record as a complimentary letter? Has anybody ever been forwarded one personally by internal mail or email? Way happens to them? Where do they go? And before you say nobody send compliments that way, I know for a fact that some have been submitted through that page.
Who cares? They can get your name and rank anyway. What home would you think this invited them to?

This is already here. If you pat someone down you are required to give him a receipt with your name and star on it. Nothing will stop some dumb cops from getting out of the car and chasing people. They don’t care about their jobs or life’s but they place other cops in danger for responding and helping them.

My sister travelled to NYC quite a bit. She said after DeBlasio was elected there was a noticeable difference in the city. Homeless abound in the train station, panhandlers hassling people on the street, garbage all over....Progressives will ruin this country one city at a time.

What about your family, friends? if your wife or family member had to call the police? Imagine if you were assigned the call? Your wive, kids or family are screwed! Your neighbors screwed. There are limits to being fetal. Officers like you disgust me.
I didn't like it when name plates became required uniform wear. That was partly the purpose of a star #. When "WHAT'S YER BADGE # !?" was asked by a citizen, it was a means of identification for further ID if need be, without giving out a cop's name that could traced to a home address, thus putting the house, car and family at risk of retaliation.

1;44, Many years ago when I was with my FTO in 007, he deliberately made a point of speaking Polish and Lithuanian almost all night to our "customers".
