We Care About Officers! (not really)

  • When a new state law took effect in August, supporters believed it would finally remove an obstacle for police officers seeking mental health treatment and maybe help lower a high suicide rate. Turns out it was not that simple.

The law prohibits police departments from firing officers whose firearm owner’s identification cards have been revoked after an inpatient stay at a mental health facility. Many departments, including the Chicago Police Department, require officers to have FOID cards.

After the law was passed, Chicago and some other departments said they would still require FOID cards for officers who work the streets. Those who lost their cards would be placed on desk duty.

Advocates say this leaves in place a major hurdle as officers contemplate whether to seek treatment for post-traumatic stress and other job-related problems: They’ll keep their paycheck, but they’ll be sidelined as an officer.
You'd think the astronomically high suicide rate among officers would make someone in authority take a look at making it easier for officers to seek help. You'd be mistaken. Badly.

I mentioned I see a psychologist once a week... since 2010. I have never been admitted to a mental hospital. However I am well aware of guys who are about to crack; unfortunately hurdles while on the job, family, and other bs makes it difficult for these guys to get help. The psychologist I see, has office hours at 7pm just to see me. Best thing I have done was to see this guy.

I dunno. I read the article and it sounds a lot better then what it was. Unit 376 isn't a bad gig as long as you don't have a federal indictment hanging over your head. I'd rather work 311 then the street nowadays. That being said, Illinois is the only state besides I believe New Jersey that requires a FOID card. Glad to see we are in good company with another shitty state when it comes to pointless bureaucratic anti-gun bullshit. If you need the help don't worry about the stigma of being stripped and put in callback. The day has long since passed where I care about what anybody in this joke of a department thinks about me and others should feel the same way.

Yet Aldermen don't need such. Nor do they have to follow state laws. Home rule allows felons and domestic offenders the right to be armed.

Once again they are talking out of both sides of their mouth. Nobody ever got a disability for being mentally ill on this job. Where do they plan to put you on desk duty in soft clothes. This is why people don't go get help when they need it. They suck it up and suffer, afraid they will lose their job if they seek help.

I'm a bit torn here. Why should a LEO be exempt from the same law that I as a private citizen am subject to? If a private citizen has an inpatient mental health stay, they will lose their FOID/CCW. Why shouldn't a LEO? If "Society" thinks someone with a mental health issue shouldn't have a gun, then that holds true for LEOs as well.

We have the highest suicide rate among police departments countrywide, and the reason would be so many factors, from the bastardization from the corrupt dishonest media who beats the drums 24/7 about anything a copper does, to the pathetic example of "leadership" on this once great department.

To me it just seems like common sense that a Doctor who's treating an officer should determine if the officer is safe to have a weapon and his FOID Card, instead of some bureaucrat sitting in a basement office at the IL State Police arbitrarily Revoking a FOID Card solely on the fact the officer sought help.

One thing I'd like to add -- The democrats say they're all about 'Common Sense' when it comes to Firearm Regulations, maybe they'd like to apply that to this issue.

Now I'm not a LEO and the above is strictly my opinion.

If you have a mental condition that requires inpatient hospitalization, you should not be a police officer.

you really want a copper on the job who is so close to cracking that the state had to revoke his FOID card?

State law already says police officers do not need FOID for DUTY ammo or firearms. All Depts. have to do is drop their General order on FOID requirement because State law already clears the Dept. of that requirement.

Not a cop. I'm not clear on why CPD sworn officers need a FOID card. You're trained in the use of firearms and have had a background check prior to being sworn in. If I'm not mistaken you have a certification saying you're qualified to be law enforcement. A police photo ID should be adequate to purchase ammo and firearms. A FOID would be needed if you're stripped of badge, ID, and duty firearm, but it shouldn't be required for your job. Do all the aldermen have FOIDs, or did they obtain their weapons on the sly? I don't know. I have more questions than answers.

Forget about trying help police officers in their time of mental illness let’s spend more time, money and resources on helping drug addicts, child molesters, people with gender identification proplems, people with alternate lifestyles and people still in depression that Trump is president. You see it’s politically correct to just fuck coppers and be done with it.

Illinois FOID Act exempts law enforcement from having FOID cards while performming their duties. "430 ILCS 65/2(c): The provisions of this Section regarding the acquisition and possession of firearms, firearm ammunition, stun guns, and tasers do not apply to law enforcement officials of this or any other jurisdiction, while engaged in the operation of their official duties."

But once again CPD and other agencies find a way to complicate things. Why do they think peace officers/LEOs were very clearly exempted in the first damn place?

And were worried about elected officials making a mess of things???

So, what's wrong with callback? Still get your check, right? No forced overtime? Counts toward your pension? Next step, they'll allow you to work callback from home. Why not? You can make a bullshit report sitting on your toilet or in front of the TV with a beer in your hand. GO Callback! I might come back from retirement for that.

Police in Chicago arrest plenty of thugs that never bothered to get a FOID and that charge is dropped by the SA, so what is the purpose other than to collect a tax with a different name. It's a shame Chicago Police officers get caught up in a BS city law that the state exempts them from. Give the Officers the help they need to do the job that 99.9% of us wouldn't even try to do. FOID is a joke played on every law abiding citizen of Illinois.
