Big Discrepancy

  • Chicago’s 2018 murder total falls for second straight year but still tops 530

As of Dec. 25, the medical examiner had declared 539 deaths in Chicago in 2018 as homicides. The Sun-Times has counted 542 murders in Chicago in 2018 as of Dec. 25. The Chicago Police Department has said 555 people have been murdered in the city as of Dec. 23.

A death classified as a homicide by the medical examiner’s office does not mean it will be considered a murder by Chicago Police. For example, the man who shot and killed three people at Mercy Hospital last year was himself shot at killed by a Chicago Police officer. His death, though ruled a homicide, is not considered a murder by police.

The CPD figure also does not include murders on city expressways, which fall under the jurisdiction of Illinois State Police, or killings deemed justified by CPD investigators, as in cases of self defense.
Which partly explains the discrepancy between "official" totals and the only numbers that we use - HeyJackass.com:
  • Shot and Killed: 493
    Shot and Wounded: 2454
    Total Shot: 2948
    Total Homicides: 585
So no one, not the M.E., CPD, media nor HeyJackass can agree on a set number.

Let’s go one step further, please.

Let’s make widely public the percentages of the victims by race/demographics.

Ditto for any known or described offenders associated with each killing.

What’s that, ya say? It’s racist to even propose compiling/disseminating those stats?

Why keep tapdancing around stark reality? ‘Ones’ & ‘Fours’ take the gold once again.

U.S. Army: severely wounded in-country on the battlefield.
They triage, stabilize patient, fly him to military hospital in
Germany. If soldier dies in Germany, it's not counted as a
death associated with the original country.
In other words, sure he got shot there, but due to our over
top efforts, he did not die there.

Depending on the victim the total is to high or not high enough. With the Crook County court system street justice is the only justice you have. Unfortunately innocent victims share the same fate as those fated to die violently from the day they were born.

Just wondering why the "shot and killed" and the "shot and wounded" don't add up to the "total shot" number?

Hey SCC,

Don't forget to add the Tribune's count of 570 to the mix.

The actual ME number is 557 through 12/26. There is a quirk with their data set where they leave the city field blank in some cases and if you just sort by Chicago, like the S-T did, you'll end up missing 20 or so cases. Oops.

In any event, 2018's final number is higher than every year since 2004 except for 2016 and 2017. The running average of the last 15 years is 510 homicides.

Happy New Year.

So, if I'm being robbed and I shoot and kill the bad guy and leave the scene. Will the CPD count the dead guy I left on the street a murder or a death investigation? I know of at least three such cases that were classified as a death investigation because of the unknown circumstances.

Honestly, it is wrong to say every unsolved shooting death is a murder. It very well could be that a large segment of uncleared shooting deaths are acts of simple self defense!

If a 19 year old is being robbed, pulls his gun to defend against that robber by shooting and killing him, there isnt truly a crime but gun control stops truth from coming out...as the 19 year old CANT hang around to explain what happened lest they be hammered with the fake crime of defending himself while under the age of 21.

So then, who BENEFITS by all deaths involving gunshots being crime by default, absent any facts(guilty until proven innocent)? Think it through and let that sink in.

It may seem odd, but this is not the first time nor the first venue where the numbers of deaths are uncertain. No one, for example, can identify the actual number of the members of the 7th Cavalry who died at the Little Big Horn. SNAFU. It happens.

My question, is why are expressway murders not counted by CPD as occurring in Chicago. Chicago annexed the expressways so they are in the City limits. Those crimes should count too.

SCC,

Murders are a reality of life in every large city around the globe. As a federal 1811 series criminal investigator I have lived around the world. I am also a former CPD copper so I’m not a milquetoast provocateur. And yes I was the real police. Wether you are in Amsterdam, Chicago, London or New York City or Paris violent crime in some sectors of the city is a reality. If you wish to live in boring ass cities like Boise, Butte or Cheyenne you can have guns galore, lower taxes and less violent crimes. Unfortunately innovation and mega global enterprises don’t have Boise or Butte on their radar. I can’t think of anything memorable about Cheyenne. I was just in Chicago for the funeral of a very respected police lieutenant and I was amazed at how astoundingly beautiful the north side, downtown, and near downtown areas were. To maintain such a vibrant and absolutely livable city, high taxes are an unpeasant reality. After all coppers in Chicago make a very nice salary and I won’t begin talking about the fire fighters and their sweet deal. Salaries and benefits for coppers and fire fighters require high taxes. Those who can’t afford it have to move out and give up their space to someone who can. Vibrant and very livable cities attract young people who bring forth innovation and modern progress. Violence by the lower economic strata is unfortunately a reality in a large city with so much going for it. I felt very safe while I was in the city. I kind of felt ashamed for traveling with my snubby and I honestly did not feel like I needed it. Chicago is a great city no doubt due in part to the contributions of working coppers. Guys stay safe, remain in the fight and be loyal to this wonderful city named Chicago.

And maybe it doesn’t. 011 and 007 have the VRI along with pos falling all over themselves and murders didn’t go down
Always here about the 70’s when we had 13,500 sworn and guess what. 700, 800 and 900 plus murders. So much for more police cut the murder rate
