Extortion - Unit 701

This crap pops up every year:
  • Lt on second watch in unit 701 strong arming po s to buy tickets to xmas party and pay $20 for a gift for commander!!! Threatening no time due if you dont pay!!
Document the date and time, have a witness and grieve any denials. Look into an EEOC beef, too. You might be able to retire if you prevail.

Those parties are a joke. Anywhere from $60-$75 for a ticket for shit food and Lower well drinks. I’ll stay home in my comfy recliner and get drunk off some quality booze for free. Hell if I’m feeling sociable I’ll invite my buddies over as well. Typical CPD bullshit though, record it, grieve it and sue the city for discrimination and other contract violations. Like SCC said, sue your way to retirement or a nice cushy spot

An EEOC complaint can cause a lot of heat on an Exempt. Problem is most coppers don't document adequately, then after they get fucked with enough times they usually just bid out to another district. Make no mistake, if you got enough ammo to file an EEOC, then do it. Even if it gets unfounded after an investigation, it will cause the department a lot of headaches. Unlike a sham IAD investigation, Government Lawyers working for EEOC aren't going to give a fuck about whom a white shirt hobnobs with at NOBLE or LAPA golf outings and political fund raisers. Bully gold stars won't be so tough either once they read over the paperwork that they will have to sign and told they will be charged with perjury if they get caught lieing. FYI, the EEOC are understaffed and backed up with complaints at their Chicago office. After registering to make a complaint online, the average is that it takes about three months for a scheduled appointment to talk with a representative in person. If after meeting you, and they decide to go with filing a complaint on your behalf, then the department will be notified within 10 days of the pending investigation.

OT but referring to the previous post concerning promoting more sergeants to supervise detectives. As a sergeant for a couple years now, I have never been a detective, have no idea how to be a detective nor have a clue how to supervise a detective's investigation. With that being said I personally don't believe that I nor any sergeants like me belong anywhere near the detective division. You have far too many supervisors who were never detectives supervising detective investigations, too many supervisors who were never et's/pfi's supervising crime scenes, too many supervisors who were never in major accidents supervising fatal scenes, etc. You want better results? To supervise a detective you had to previously close a case, to supervise an et you had to previously process a crime scene, to supervise maiu you had to previously recreate a fatal crash! So simple it'll never happen. Chicago ain't ready for reform!

Maybe you should turn in your stripes. Supervision is supervision and if you’re not a dog ass, it doesn’t take long to catch on. If you can read a report, you should be able to determine if everything is correct and submitted in a timely matter. I guess you believe that if you never worked the desk, you can’t be a desk sergeant. No need to micromanage but to make sure everything is in order.

I couldn’t agree with you more. As a supervisor I was asked to be a Sgt in the detective division after a few years as a Sgt. I thought about it and it prob would’ve been an easier gig, but what the hell do I know about being a detective. I never was one, so how could I go over there and tell them how to do their job. Unfortunately I do believe that is one spot where you really should have good seasoned detectives that made Sgt return to.

Let me get this straight , lucky enough ( or most likely connected enough ) to be in a unit and not some shitty district , and your bitching about being required to go to a Christmas party ?? Wow! You absolutely should be required to at the very least buy a ticket. Same goes for all you guys/gals on management or tact . These parties are not the "Commanders " parties. They are to celebrate the holidays and celebrate the careers of retirees. Every single party I have ever been to , the Commander usually gets out of there as fast as they can.

This goes on all the time. I was a little more then a year from retirement and threatened with retaliation for not buying Christmas Party and retirement tickets for an asshole Lt. The two Sgt.'s told me they would not promote my retirement party the following year. When I told them I didn't care because I wasn't going to attend they looked at me in shock. I took away whatever leverage they thought they had. In this post, the Lt. is threatening not to give you TD, so what, just hit the medical or sickness in family. Fight fire with fire, do your own investigation. Find out if she's taking early ducks, working a part-time job on Department time, it's not hard to find dirt to turn the tables on these assholes. Remember, document every infraction you witness.

Makes to much sense therefore it will never happen. Use to work in 189 I loved when Sgt’s were there that never made a buy never wrote a sw never did surveillance or enforcement would try to tell the team how to do it. But if you think about it these suck ass clout babies need to put units like ET, organized crime, MAUI, D unit in their resumes so that when they come up for another promotion they can say they ‘worked’ in those places. Just like the new house mouse Sgt’s and Lts that get promoted go to 6,7,10, 11, 15 and work there for 8 months then tell everyone how they worked in those places.

I am proud to say I never went to a CPD Christmas party in my career. When I came out of the private industry (manufacturing) to join CPD, I was amazed that CPD didn't pay for the Christmas parties as a perk for morale. How Naïve I was. (I know) After a few years on and seeing how things Christmas party related were used as a tool for the brass, and alleged misuse of monetary funds. I vowed never to attend these butt kissing opportunity extravaganza festivals. The people who do the bosses bidding seem to work these parties for all they are worth. They in kind expect perks like appointment to second watch, or cake assignments.

When I was in an Area, after the usual attempted "strongarm" from my supervisors, I missed yet another CPD holiday extravaganza festival, and the party was in the hall right next door to a patrol district party the same evening. Area tickets were 20 dollars more for the same party. I'm pretty sure each party was an ass smooching dog and pony show, but where did the extra money go? And did anyone bother to mention the real reason we celebrate Christmas in the first place? Charlie Brown was so spot on here...

At work, we celebrated "festivus" as it was for the "rest of us"...it seemed fitting, and non denominational as the farce that CPD was putting on. But it was more appropriate, believe me. If you have never "missed" a CPD extravaganza festival, try it and see the pressure applied by the supervisors to get you to participate. It is palpable...but they cannot force you to go as the party is during work hours, and you must purchase a ticket. The worst they can do is make you take time due for the tour, but I always worked as my unit of assignment for the tour. There is always work to be done.

Another blessing, is that I never had to expose my family to these dog and pony shows, and that you cant put a price on. And...I never had to kiss any cheeks to get something I deserved..."and that has made all the difference" (Robert Frost)

I stood at many CPD funerals going back 30 years and the dignity shown today is everybit the class act as it has always been.

As an old retired guy I want to express my appreciation to our young guys and gals who holdup this time honored tribute.

I also watched the news bits shown today regarding the typical bs that took place at 3900 W Roosevelt, I watched it a few times and was impressed with how the officers carried themselves. After years of being the police I learned a little about body language & you guys looked fantastic. I get that policing today is more difficult then it's ever been and I applaud the young officers who's job is way more dificult than those who came before you.

Of course then there’s the dayafter random samples requests.
Old school strong arm is all talk.
Buying a six figure a gift?
What kind of boss is willing to accept a gift from the lower ranks, in exchange for a day or two off next year?

But can I still buy a ticket and drop a dub’l sawbuck?
I’d like to get on some of that class action.

And the 007/011 "Crime Fighters" Christmas party is STILL honoring the scamming criminal Johnson!! Have fun! I heard next they're going to start selling tickets to neighborhood block parties to celebrate those criminals too. I'd be pretty pissed if I was a retiree and was put in the same category as that disgrace to our uniform. What a shame.

Like someone said earlier, the Christmas party is to pay respect for the retires, if you don't want to support the recently retired and think you being strong armed into doing something unethical, grow some balls and say no. Back in the early 90's when I was on tact you came to work and two Christmas tickets were in your mailbox every year. You shut up and paid for them if you appreciated the little perks that came with the spot you were in. The Christmas party is not to benefit the commander but PO's who you have worked with for years.

Okay..... here's a question for the pro-party Christmas suckholes:

If it's for the retirees, why are the Commanders even present? They aren't part of a police Union anymore. Commanders sure seem to care an awful lot about how many people attend. It's almost like they are getting some type of kickback or something.......

I'll buy a ticket if the Commander has no part in any way, shape, or form. I might even start going. Until then I ain't spending shit on any of this junk.

Most cops don't go to these things because they don't like or trust the Commander. It's also brutal seeing Sgts and Lts kiss ass to him or her.

If these parties are really about Christmas cheer and honoring old geezers then the Commander should not be in attendance. It would be best for what the supposed Christmas parties are all about

Yes they can be costly but still affordable for what you get, a good time and maybe a memory. Buy the ticket and go have fun, it's for you not the commander. That being said any respectable commander would be embarrassed to receive a gift.tell whom ever no thanks to the gift but I'll take 1 ticket to the party.

And I've met Jimmy Sanchez. A hell of a nice guy, hard working copper and was very good at it. I don't believe in more than one merit bump but he definitely earned one of them. Welcome to reconstruction 2.0. The way to stop the jailing of black men is to make what they do legal. Simple as that. Let the them run wild. If someone walks away, let them walk away.

I assume officers will still have the right of self-defense. Smaller officers will be at a real disadvantage.

Speaking of reconstruction, ˝General Grant said that the surest way to ensure the repeal of an obnoxious law is through its vigorous enforcement. Take this to heart and stop enforcing laws that the state attorney will not file.

I was recently at Gettysburg and saw all those monuments to Illinois regiments whose members lost their life's blood on that field. All those white men who gave their lives to set black people free. And now their decedents are all racists because of the color of their skin.

What you see here is the explanation for segregation. Back in the day black communities tolerated crimes that would not be tolerated in white communities. It made everyone happy. White people, who seem to want well-ordered communities, and black people, who seem to be willing to tolerate crime, both got what they wanted.

Then comes the 1960 and the black folk complained that the police didn't care about black crime and demanded the cops enforce the law. The cops did and now we realize that the blacks really prefer to be left alone.

Understand this and allow Chicago to become even more segregated than it already is. Let the ghettos be what they want to be; those snowflakes seem to be tougher than we give the credit for because they are more than willing to be crime victims. Protect the middle class communities that support crime suppression, and give the others communities the level of law and order they demand, which is none.

I read in this blog stories about your pensions. You folks are out of luck. The only way to fund your pensions is through increased taxes. The police don't have the political muscle to push through an increase. The newspapers and democrats have villainized the police so the argument is now "why should we take money from the community and give it to our oppressors? Why do the cops need more in retirement than the rest of us?"

You young coppers will never have the retirement that you are being promised. Be smart and get the hell out. If you want to be a cop, then go to a community that supports law enforcement by fully funding its pension plan. SCC and the unions can cry all they want, but the political power in Chicago is against you, and you won't prevail.

Meanwhile fund your deferred comp to the maximum (Vanguard index funds) and work those extra jobs so you can send your kids to private school so they don't have to follow you into a what is a dead end occupation.

Spoken by a guy from a police family with 35 years (not CPD) on the job, now living far away in a gated community that hasn't seen a burglary in anyone's memory.

Oh, ironically behind these gates and roving security patrol lives a concentration of snowflakes who think that all cops are racists thugs who beat and kill minority people for fun. I hate them all, but I like to take their money on the golf course.

12/06/2018 05:30:00 AM

How do you determine if everything is in order if you don't know what the job entails? Typica clueless response by a clueless merit hack. This is why there is so much incompetence on this job. One question that begs to be asked here...Does the Commander have to buy a ticket to the event? Or are they taken care of?
It may be a thinly veiled purpose to "honor" retirees, but knowing how the city has justified and bastardized everything from promotions to watch selections, I remain wary...another earlier poster asked "why then do commanders seem so concerned about attendance?" this is also a good question. I have personally felt the pressure to attend in several units of assignment.
And to the unit who is throwing a "Holiday" party...that's just PC run amok. Don't want to offend Muslims or atheists. The department and the city have long forgotten about the real reason for Christmas.

Don't oversimplify boss. It all depends on the type of allegations and the rank of the accused. For example, if a woman claims ongoing harassment by a supervisor, good luck using the old 'you are supposed to report misconduct by the end of your tour,' excuse to get out of it.

I do agree with calling them out right then and there on contract violations if they are stupid enough to say it in front of witnesses.

"You guys better start buying tickets or I'm going to deny time due."
"Hey Lieutenant, how about you go fuck your mother?"

What will he or she do then? Write you up for insubordination? Go right ahead. That will cause a shitload of unnecessary paperwork that will eventually just wind up being a wash. Plus, if they start messing with you after that then it will come off as retaliation.

Regarding the sgts. Eddie Johnson and Melissa Staples dumped all the sergeants in Major Accidents who knew how to do investigations and were trained at Northwestern for crash investigation because he was mad at the lt AS

R u kidding? They were dumped because the reporting and filing system was all screwed up. They sat in the office and NEVER went out on the street. They were some of the laziest people I ever saw. And Useless. Just like AS.

I retired after 40 years on the job and my retirement party was attended by about 300 people. My friends and family were amazed. One chopper told them that I was a good guy and great Sergeant who took care of the guys always. Many bosses attended but they were true friends not just a boss.i miss my friend da on the job but somehow they seem to forget you.

Write a check and call the bank and cancel it"

What Horrible advice! Have you not heard that some officers have been fired for passing bad checks? Cancelling the check only shows intent here. You are a police officer, is that the best advice you can give?

How about letting the supervisors know you have a spine and saying to them "Thanks but No thanks,I have other plans that evening"

I think the way it was presented was wrong. Dont threaten people to go to a party if they dont want to go. But some bosses just are born to be a dick .
