Not a Good Trend

Yet another suicide, this time up north.

Worked in 007, but detailed out to 35th and Michigan.

Whatever the Department is doing to combat cops killing themselves, isn't working.

The fact is the dept and the city for that matter really don’t care about us. They’re just words, empty words. They treat us as the real bad guys in society being responsible for all the city’s problems. If they really meant what they said they would at least stop being so adversarial towards us on every little thing. No contract and probably wont have one for at least 2-3 more years. How many more coppers are we gonna lose? Hell they took away our healthcare. The fact is no one and I mean no one cares about us expect maybe the guys we sit next to in the squad or at roll call. We are on our own, that’s it.......

I've sat on the floor, rocking myself, for hours on end on holidays when it seemed the world was doing just swell without me. No one called. No one cared if I was alone. No one thought I mattered enough. And it hurt so badly, sometimes it was minute to minute for me.

What would have helped? If somebody noticed. If somebody had the decency to seriously invite me to share a table with them (no, not 'you know you're welcome any time', but a real, personal invitation).

The few people who barely got a whiff of something being not quite right made offhanded comments like 'count yourself lucky, the holidays aren't all they're cracked up to be' or 'maybe we can get together after the holiday's over'. Not helpful, guys. When someone feels so alone and so empty, you really DO have to make the effort and extend yourself.

I was lucky because I had dogs and I felt a responsibility to them. Otherwise, I'd have been one of those names in the paper for one or two news cycles.

Pay attention to people in your life who've had huge losses, or divorces, or life changes. They may be able to put on a brave face to make it through the tour, but don't be lazy and dismiss them as being okay. The shiny lights and the Christmas carols and the parties all remind them that they aren't PART of it and it can be bitterly lonely and confusing for them.

I've plowed through my stuff and I have a new life and the holidays aren't the hell they used to be, but you'd better believe I KNOW what each and every person I care about is doing for holidays and birthdays, because it's a lot easier to insist they come to my home for a holiday meal than it is to go their funeral and know I could have made a difference.

02:24, my days are the same. I'm very happy for you & pray that each day you have the comfort of someone to love & someone to love you in return.

RIP my brother, you deserve the rest.

So awful. Once again the CPD leads the nation in officer suicides. At least 60 percent greater than all others. Spokesman Ed is useless and just a rahm mouthpiece. I have said it before, shift millions of the budget to officer health and wellness. Don’t stand up and tell me we hired another one clinician. We are beyond the breaking point now. Shift tens of millions to officer wellness. If it must come from community relations funding, so be it. We are part of the community OR Since it is so important to bullshit the public on a daily basis Eddy, just tell them we are shifting tens of millions into neighborhood relation, just don’t tell them for what.
Supervisors step up when needed and address the problem. Worry about the officers health before his or her response to calls. WTF. I’m tired of reading about this.
FOP? Do we need to reach out to the National group to hear you address this on a weekly basis? Come on Assholes step up. If you can’t talk about it, hire an expert in police suicides that can.
None of us want to read about another loss this month, but if we all remain silent, we will.

The City stopped caring in the early 90's.

Alot of lip service.

With the blatant corruption lack of promotions and the obvious manpower issues its is a powder keg for depression.

Keep in mind that the newer generation have very poor coping skills and horrible human interaction skills. The issue of everyone gets a ribbons is not how this job works.

Expect this issue to continue.

Your post hit me hard. I was in a rough spot mentally two years ago. Really felt the walls coming in and Just struggling with everything. At my lowest had an ex said my attitude wasn't good so they left me.
Thankfully had someone reach out and was able to overcome a lot of things. Happy to report things are much better. Leaving cpd helped. Went to a smaller agency. The next step will be leaving law enforcement.

Dont brush off those that are having trouble. Telling them to just get over their problems never helps. Actually just sit down with the person.

We have five or six different units that oversee EVERY action a policeman takes on and off duty. Each unit has to staff at least 30 people, again to scrutinize each and every action of the police officer; to Monday morning quarterback for hours the actions that took less than 15 seconds on the street. No counting the “community” and “media” backlash and bullshit.

Yet for the mental health needs of these same Chicago Police Officers, there are a total of 5 “clinicians” who are assigned to “help”. And then you’re brought to EAP for help and your LT outs you and dumps you.

No one gives a fuck about us. Take that to the bank.

RIP Office.

20 years ago EVERY supervisor treated PO’s like shit. It was like some sick, twisted fucking game to them-especially when you were right out of theacademy. They could smell the new leather and NEVER let an opportunity pass. They took great pride in being assholes when you had the audacity to not know where or how to sign in at court, how to pick up evidence at ERPS, or dozens of other situations that a brand new copper would have no idea how to handle.

Part of me thinks that is partially the reason some coppers treat the public and fellow officers that way. It’s how they were treated, so since someone in authority was an asshole to me, than I will be an asshole to those “under” me

Give us the Initials and rank of this "Bully Bosshole" supervisor.

I was the victim of such an assault by the Legendary " Bully Bosshole" LT J.R.A.(ret) many years ago in 011. He was berating me over some Bull Crap, until I suggested in a stern voice that we go out in the lot and finish this conversation. The look on his face was priceless, he turned around and walked into the WC office and he never said another word to me. When you do this make sure no other witnesses are nearby, these wimps will not know what to do and back off.

My prayers go out to the officer and his family who cared about him.

So I have read the comments. Advocate for each other. Be there for each other. EAP is there to help. Every district has peer support members. Talk to them. If you don't want to talk to someone in your own district or unit you can talk to some in another unit. Reach out. There are options. If you know someone in distress say something. Call me. I will listen.

THIS! I felt this way this last xmas, I was told I was lucky to be able to he alone. It sure didnt feel lucky, sitting around with my dogs. Stopping in to Facebook, seeing everyone married, with a newborn or a young kid who is enjoying the holidays. Meanwhile I'm home alone, no wife, no kids, no family. Yeah, I feel so lucky. (Rolls eyes).

Fortunately I know the holidays will pass, this feeling will still be there but not nearly as bad during the day to day life.

We all need to remember, people you know just might be fighting a serious personal battle.

Take care of yourself, self-care: diet, reduce alcohol, excercise, travel, new hobbies people and seek out new employment. You are more than qualified! but this job has become like teaching. They want young, 4-5 years max on the job then bring in new ones to pay less. This is will never be a career as in the past. THey broke CPD on purpose. They use superiors to unjustly attack good Officers.

Yes there is a segment in this city who doesn't care about CPD, and yes they are loud. You spend the majority of your working hours dealing with the denizens of society and don't get to interact with the good people near enough. But there are many more good people in the city who see what is going on and fully support CPD. Please, please, please know that by far, the majority of citizens respect, support and care about every single one of you. I know one comment in a blog is not going to make a real difference but please know that we do care and there are many of us. Your brothers and sister in blue care. If the job gets to the point where you are considering a permanent solution, seek help, quit the job if necessary. We need each and every one of you in this world.

Very true. Nobody except our close friends and family care about us. The media has succeeded in making the police out to be the bad guys, as they continue to martyr bad guys like LaQuan, Michael Brown, Sandra Bland, etc; etc. And anyone who keeps bringing in numbers and thinks for a second that anyone above a Sgt cares anything about you in this department needs a reality check. Not one exempt cares about anything or anyone except their gold star pension. The sooner the average p.o. accepts this, the better off they will be. And the FOP needs to stop being so corrupt and step up on this residency issue. The quality of life in Chicago sucks, and department members should have the option of living outside of this shithole if they chose!

Kids (3-10 years old) have been killed in this city for the past 40 years. I don't know the number but it has to be at least 30 in the past 20 years. The papers report it for a few days then it's over. CPD does nothing because the politics and politicians have our hands tied. This does not go on in other Cities. I'm surprised an outside news agency never did a story on young kids that are murdered here. Bottom line is if they don't care about a 5 year old killed, they're not going to care about a police suicide. Please watch out for each other.

Boy does that tell you all you need to know about how much you matter to the City and the Department. Make sure the NOBLE members get promoted, make sure every useless supervisor in IAD gets a take home car, make sure each Exempt has three desk dollies to do their bidding, make sure every ghetto rat gets free breakfast/lunch/dinner/midnight snack, and so on and so on. Just a few reasons why this administration gives a shit less if you swallow your piece. Also, bare in mind that EAP reports to the one and only useless "Pillows" Barb West.

No one care?. What about family, friends , neighbors, relatives, etc? Many of us realize city and CPD don’t care and don’t expect them to
It’s something you have to deal with. How many companies or businesses really care about their employees? Not many, if any. Relax about the contract Going back decades it’s taken at least two years or more to get a contract and don’t think that it’s going to change anytime soon
Try to relax and enjoy what you have and not work yourself to an early death over things you can’t change.
Take care of yourself and other officers and live to enjoy many years of your well deserved pension

As a stupidvisor myself the fastest way to lose everyone’s respect is to motherfuck someone in front of everyone. That shit is totally uncalled for and infractions warrant corrections in private and in a respectful manner which includes no fucking yelling. There’s nothing on this job worth yelling at another officer unless you’re on a traffic stop on the highway and then you gotta yell for anyone to hear shit. I don’t know how the troopers do it out there.

Phil Cline began a great anti-depression/suicide team towards the end of his career. It was going to work in conjunction with Adler School of Phsyciatry. Jodi Weiss came in and that was the end of that program!!

I’ve got 21 years on and hoping to retire soon. I’ve been on anti depressants for my entire career except for the academy.
So the f what?! Who cares? The department never say anything. They’re doctor prescribed. I picked a shrink out online. They’ve changed my life. My life is good!
My prescriptions paid for by my city BCBS. As they have to.
They pay for my shrink visits too.
My point is EAP is great. A starting point if you need to.
But nothing’s stopping any of us from looking up a psychologist or
psychiatrist through Blue Cross Blue Shield or whatever your health plan,
make an appointment and go. It’s covered. Don’t live in misery.
Things are so much easier to make things better.
Keep it to yourself. Unless you see one of us who’s not himself or herself,
lend them a hand back up. Do it!
Fuck these asseaters we work for.
Fuck this job.
It’s about us. Our family. Our friends.
Hang in there and back each other up.
In every way.
They’re never gonna do shit for us.
We all gotta do it ourselves and help each other.
Life gets better. It really does.

So a while back this officer was having some trouble and ended up with Eap. So what does the now indicted commander and weasel tac lt who is now at gang intel do? They dump him from tac and put him on the watch working the wagon. What fine leadership skills shown especially by the lt. The same one the denies he worked at iad. So keep in mind officers at homan dont seek help or he will try and dump you also or dime you out to iad.

TW, he denies his time in IAD because he wants to be “cool”, don’t let his history as a tac sgt, tac lt, or current assignment fool you. His daddy makes sure he gets “cool” spots, but he’s a weasel as the original poster said

Do not trust EAP. Our insurance covers seeing people who can professionally help. Know this, the department does not care about you. The city does not care about you. And I'm sorry to say but the truth is the guy sitting next to you in roll call does not care about you. Having said that please seek help, hit the medical, take some time off, leave for a while (extendable to a year). But don't give them anything. Get a hobby and spend time with your non police friends. The department is done and there is nothing there for you. So find joy in something else.

maybe 6-1600 hrs and 1600-0200 hrs
Officers that need straight afternoons could work power cars 2100-0700 hrs
these younger kids need guidance , 3rd watch 90% rookies
You need old timers to reenforce the "it's all Bull Sh-- Kid"

No one has to reenfirce anything. You have to figure it out yourself. If you are too dumb to figure that out, no old timer is going to change your mind

I got tired of cutting lines from each of the above posts. This job isn't what it once was. It's different from when I started. Some of the changes have been for the better, some for the worse. Guess what? That's how it has been across the country. To those who think WE are the only ones going thru this, look at how the country has changed. If you're thinking someone else is going to take care of you and your family, think again. I work to take care of my family. I plan on my retirement. I save for my families educational expenses. I do my best to stay healthy to live better and longer. I don't expect the mayor or supt, to worry about me. I get paid to do a job. It's one I am good at and enjoy. I get my job satisfaction from helping good people and using the full extent of the law to punish the bad. Each of us has to find their own source of job satisfaction and pride in ownership. Believe the media and haters that you're the problem and you buy into it. Listen to this rhetoric and you cant help but get depressed.

On January 13, 2017, the DOJ released its report on CPD. In that report, DOJ found that CPD’s officer suicide rate is more than 60% higher than the national average.

Now compare the time, efforts, and money spent on "restoring trust" with the community to helping reduce CPD's officer suicide rate since January 13, 2017.

Unfortunately, it's not one of the top priorities of the City or Department.

It’s how they were treated, so since someone in authority was an asshole to me, than I will be an asshole to those “under” me
1/02/2019 07:56:00 AM

Really? EVERY supervisor treated people like shit? I made sergeant in 1996 (over 20 years ago) after 15 years as a P/O in 007. I NEVER treated a P/O as shit. I emphasized at roll call that if they were not sure what to do, call me. I would respond to requests for a supervisor, regardless if it was my sector. The day I retired, (I refused any cake & coffee bullshit) I showed up at 35th street and found dozens of P/O's waiting for me there to congratulate me and thank me for guidance over the years. Don't paint with a wide brush my friend. Not EVERY supervisor shit on people. Some of us, who had done the job, respected you who still do the job!

First off my condolences to the guys family. Hope they someday are able to put this horrendous day past them.

The one thing that the person in charge of all of us can control or help solve, and he refuses to step in.
So with that said let me intro my plan to help stymie some of this shit from happening
Fuck face if you're reading this you can copy paste my plan into a new program and look like a fucking hero

1- Create a fucking group of guys, hostage negotiator, blue shirts, trained civilian therapists to be available city wide 24/7 to respond immediately to a P.O. in crisis to get to the house and immediately get the fucking gun out of the house.
Go through the motions with the person and give them a cooling off period of a day or two and make sure they are good to come back to work. If they are then help them introduced to therapists that can help and slowly begin the process of healing without losing their job or lives. Point is you gotta get the gun outta the house for a 12 hr cooling period. If they are gonna jump or do something else then they're gonna do it and theres nothing you can do about it but at least you tried. By making this shit inconvenient it will put a drastic drop in those numbers we are seeing just because if there's one thing I know is that a gun makes the ultimate decision super easy, and cops hate doing anything that involves work so having to work to end it will maybe get those couple hours needed of breaths and calming moments. No supervisors on scene ever. Look up other depts. They do this too.

2- Those videos in roll call are a fucking travesty and make a mockery of suicide. Straight out of 1989 Donnie Darko you can empower yourself shit is a fucking joke dude. Scrap the fucking video. Actually, top dipshit, you can go in front of the camera and have the balls to admit this place has a fucking problem. And you'll address that fucking problem by utilizing point one. Heres the number to the unit keep it in there and don't ever hesitate to call. Tell everyone to feel comfortable enough to call fellow coppers and utilize them with the unit if need be. End of video.

3- If colleges and high schools can have therapists on standby and brought to campus's when someone writes the word TRUMP on a fucking sidewalk in chalk, you better believe you can send the fucking therapists to the fucking districts when this or something similar line of duty death happens. START BEING PROACTIVE ABOUT THIS YOU DUMB FUCK.

4- SEND A FUCKING EMAIL THAT DOESN'T SOUND LIKE THE BOILER PLATE OF THE LAST 129348729347 OTHER ONES. Say something about this officers life as if you gave a fuck and make it at least seem like you even pretend to care.

Do those 4 things and you'll look like a genius without having to do much. Fellow brothers feel ok talking things out with someone from anywhere that you trust to help you. Mental health is as important as your Physical health.

I'm backing up what was said by 3:44PM about anti-depressants. One particularly stressful winter I realized that I get seasonal affective disorder, which was made worse one year from divorce. I did some research & asked my doctor for a specific antidepressant based on user reviews & research. It changed my life! I don't know how I suffered all those winters without it. Within a couple of weeks of starting it I was coping better & felt optimistic. Don't be afraid of medication if you need it. If you have allergies it's ok to take an antihistamine. And if you are in a funk you can't physically shake, ruminating, having trouble problem-solving or seeing a solution to your troubles... it's ok to take an antidepressant! Don't suffer needlessly.

Twelve years ago I was at the end of my rope and like the others that have shared their stories just wanted to end it but thank God twice I could not pull the trigger because of my children. I used my insurance to seek an outside psychologist who helped and referred me to a Psychiatrist to get some meds to sleep. I tried a couple of Doctors until I found one who I felt comfortable enough to really talk to. (Turns out it was a woman because I didn't want a man to think I was weak). I could not look at her so I just stared at floor and talked. After every session I felt that a weight had been lifted off me and I could breath a little easier.

I went to her for 5 years and learned how to handle issues when things came up. I still get the dreams but nothing like before and now I'm enjoying retirement.

I have to agree with the 005 post. The 2 watches were excused the three days to attend 2 wakes and 2 funerals. Then back to work you go! Nice gesture but Pizzas and FOP books aren’t going to help. There is a pall in that district that hasn’t disappeared. The beatings will continue until morale improves . Female 2nd watch lieutenant is an insufferable micromanager who wants to write everyone up. The front office is..... well no words for that mess. No one really knows what their purpose is or their work hours. The daily work sheets are often wrong and usually dangerously low on manpower. The foot soldiers are trying their best to hold themselves together despite nonexistent leadership and organization. 005 needs a complete leadership overhaul . They need non merit leadership who give two shits about the officers. The ones now only care about their own agenda of getting the next meritorious bump. And it shows ...

For all you people/folks quoting the DOJ report, did you actually read it? All 164 pages? It's packed with information and ideas but it's also packed with the truth (to some degree). Our Department is fucked! Ill prepared, ill trained, Ill advised, our academy is a joke, our leaders are selfish, over-promoted slobs, and the city paid out $600 Million in lawsuit settlements over a 3 year period (according to the DOJ report). How much did they spend on our training? Not useless streaming videos but actual training? We have been flying without a net for years and now, as a result of the DOJ, we are changing things for the better? BULLSHIT!!!

We are expected to absorb shit, day in and day out, and come out the other end unscathed? We are expected to put our lives on the line for strangers but ignore our fellow officers or even our own needs? We are expected to know everything, understand the unknown and predict the future without hesitation and then be held to higher standard as our "leaders" throw us under the bus to save their own hides? We act as extraordinary humans but we bleed, we hurt and we need, just as others do yet we are expected to be 'better' than that? All these expectations on us with no additional resources, training or help? Seems some of that payout money could be used for better purposes with much greater results.

One suicide is far too many. And I'm not suggesting that we are all teetering on the brink of self-destruction as a result of our profession but we are definitely at a higher risk. The stigma attached to asking for help needs to change. WE need to change. We are not super human. We are super humans doing super things. That balance is delicate and dangerous. Find your equilibrium and make it work for you. If you're having trouble, get some help, ask some questions, find a vent, fix your compass and get back on track.

We don’t know what’s we can and cannot do it take and not take while seeking help for depression amongst other mental health issues. No one talks about it.

The BEST person to see is Dr. Robin Kroll she knows the in’s & out’s of the Chicago police dept and all that we deal with from the Dept. or our family or anything else. She truly is the best at what she does. She specializes in Police officers. I’ve seen her many times. She use to be with Dept now she is on her own cuz like many of us the Dept screwed her over. But trust me she only has the coppers best interest & well being in mind. Like the other poster this isn’t some shady shit, only my thoughts of someone who loves police and has helped me, my family and many others like me. You have to use your insurance now because she isn’t listed with the Dept. but that’s even better in my eyes.

I was considering seeing my doc for an antidepressant. I get seasonal depression and this year has been very hard due to recent PO deaths. It’s worse than ever ... question - what happens if I get called to random ? Do I have to carry my prescription? Do I have to reveal why I am taking it ? I think these things are kinda stopping me and others from seeking help ....

If you are prescribed medication from a doctor and are taking the medication as prescribed you have nothing to worry about at random. You don't have to reveal the reason why you're taking it. I've had random a few times while taking meds and was never questioned about it and I didn't tell them anything. Get some help. You deserve it. Good luck.

They do not test for antidepressants. You do not need to disclose you are on antidepressants. Now if you are taking some kind of drug like an amphetamine or barbiturate for your treatment then you need a prescription for it. SAD is a real problem for some people. Go to your doctor and talk about this. Do not wait because there is no reason to wait. Make the appointment get the assistance you need. There is absolutely no reason to keep feeling out of sorts. Most of the stigma is in our own heads. The only people that matter are you and your family and your real friends. You matter and your happiness matters. Make the appointment. You will feel so much better. Do whatever you can to make sure you go to that appointment. Do not cancel or reschedule. Take time if you need to in order to get an earlier appointment. Take a friend with you if you are hesitant. I hope you feel better soon!!

They don't test for antidepressants. If they need clarification on any results, you will be contacted afterwards. That's the time you have to show any prescriptions. Don't offer anything ahead of time. And since you're on city insurance, it can be easy to verify.

Sgt JV, needs to relax.
It's winter and their are ample cars out there.
Atleast the guy is utilizing his cuffs unlike some of the few 10 year wonders on thirdcwatch who claim: Im done.

To the officer who was yelled at by the sgt JV.
All this Sgt wanted to do was try and impress the others around the entire incident.
Some of the veteran officers on your watch probably might have 8-9 years at most and always do absolutely nothing and get rewarded.
F*** them all and continue to make your arrests, if u need help to be faster ask somebody.

“Phil Cline began a great anti-depression/suicide team towards the end of his career. It was going to work in conjunction with Adler School of Phsyciatry. Jodi Weiss came in and that was the end of that program!!”

Why didn’t he continue the program ? Oh that’s right he’s too busy making 6 figures running the Memorial Foundation to augment his 6 figure pension. Phat Phil once a Punk always a Punk.

Remember a key point:
Any good leader or in this case a shitty sgt:
You always praise in front of many and a scold in front of few.
Praise in public and a scold in private.
Typical bad ass sgt.

This fucking department sucks, supervisor attacking a hard working po, yes I just witnessed today a supervisor in 11th yelling at a po, and that guy is a hard worker or as some might call him a hard charger. No wonder there are POs not doing shit. Leadership is the problem.

Shut the fuck up you fuckboy
Thanks to Sgt. J.V. for putting this half a jag off in his place. Now go get your fucking shine box.

Totally agree this Sgt. JV is a tool who thinks he is the ultimate sgt because he is in 011.
Wow - u scolded a guy with 2 years on job. (who cares). Their were probably another 2-3 year wonders working the district that were riding out each one of their jobs for 20 minutes each and combined over a tour that is a lot of milking - but u were to busy being the avid bullshit artist u are and were not paying attention to that.
Go suck it JV - u r fooling nobody - not even the 2-5 year wonders you supervise.
This PO might be a stroke but atleast he is doing something unlike some on the watch who are on food runs for half their shift or are bullshitting in the station - but that is okay for them I guess.
Poor management JV.
Scold in private and praise in public.

Not to be giving out medical advice: You and your doc know better.

FYI Be careuful with the drugs, side effects, etc.

Do research on alternatives, if possible: One on one therapy, accupuncture, light lamps for SAD, music, hypnosis, meditation, excercise, groups, writing, etc.

Drugs are not magic pills they have side effects.

Maybe if POs had the option of beating some out of line Sgts ass without repercussions, more Sgts would be polite and professional. I'm guessing you wouldn't care for that Sarge.....

Nonsense--Adler/Diploma Mill created Masters in police Psychology to reward exempts "adjust professorships" and to churn out craploads of master degree holders /sworn members who would not even be accepted at a real school---and of course they were all in the tuition deferment program which allowed them/City to pay after they got their guaranteed A ....and lets not discount how books/materials were included in kickbacks (errr tuition)
